Do you remove make up on a longish haul night flight?

We’re flying overnight next Saturday and board the plane at 9.30pm. It’s such a long time since we’ve travelled long haul and overnight I’m not sure what I did before. Would you just keep your make up on and accept the dryness and crustiness the next morning or do you remove it completely then reapply when you get to your destination?
Going make up free for me isn’t an option. I’m 51, white as a ghost with dark circles and some broken veins. No one needs to see that, especially me!

Really, no one gives a toss whether you have makeup on or not. I had some ziploc bags, put cleansing oil in one with cotton pads. Another with toner. Little pots of serum and night cream. Eye cream.(and drops). Tinted moisturiser mascara and blush before landing.

cherrymauve · 08/02/2026 21:45

Never wear makeup on any flight. I’m a frequent flyer.

@NamechangerageIf I was home alone all day and no one was expected then yes, I would absolutely wear make up. I can do my make up in about 5 to 10 minutes so don’t see why not. As I said before, the only day in my adult life I haven’t worn make up was the day I gave birth. I wore make up each time I isolated with Covid too. It really lifts my mood and I love the routine. I understand why others don’t wear make up daily but I love it. I don’t plaster it on-it’s very light. Just foundation or tinted moisturiser, concealer, tightline my non existent eyes, blusher, mascara and setting powder as my skin is very oily. I probably don’t even look like I have make up on. I would feel depressed without it.

I read recently that regularly tightlining your eyes isn't very good for them.

Planner2026 · 08/02/2026 21:50

I would get on that flight clean and barefaced wearing soft cotton joggers, t shirt and sweatshirt. ‘Ready for bed’ basically.

ImPamDoove · 08/02/2026 21:53

Not helpful, but if I’m doing an overnight flight, I don’t wear any makeup. Once I’m on board, I slather on moisturiser and apply under eye patches and go to sleep.

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 21:55

@RampantIvyI don’t use a pencil, I use a liquid eyeliner. I could see how a pencil could dry your eyes and possibly block your meibomian glands but hopefully that’s not the case with a wet eyeliner pen.

I take my make up off on the flight when they turn the lights down and put moisturiser on. Then when they make it “day” again put it on again or at least tinted moisturiser and subtle eye stuff etc. I don’t like going out without and the taking it off then on kills time and helps me feel ready to sleep

Rumpoleoftheballet · 08/02/2026 22:17

Not read the full thread but I’m very pale so before going on a flight etc, I use St Tropez face mist fake tan the day before. Could that be an option?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/02/2026 22:58

Ignore Shuggles by the way, it's a man

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 16:41

Thanks all. I’m going to just apply light make up, no mascara, take it off with wipes before I board, apply a nice thick moisturiser, then next morning spf then apply a very light tinted moisturiser or light foundation, blusher and concealer.

I take mine off with wipes as soon as we’ve taken off and the seatbelt sign had gone off. Lots of moisturiser, then before getting ready to land, a quick wash, more moisturiser, BB cream and big sunglasses!

Fontet · 08/02/2026 23:23

Maybe a spray tan a few days before leaving. No need for make up at all….

Computadora · 08/02/2026 23:33

I always use face wipes, then eye cream & hydrating face mask if I’m flying more than 4 hours. For me it’s less about makeup and more about protecting skin from dehydration.

baublesandballs · 09/02/2026 00:03

Yeah I take my make up off on the plane using some wipes! Put a load pf moisturiser on during the flight then put some make up on at the other end!
it passes a bit of time doesn’t it? So blooming boring on a flight at least abit of faffing sround with your skin kills some time!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/02/2026 00:33

Gingercar · 08/02/2026 17:50

I was cabin crew for over two decades and wore make up on the plane for hours and hours. Not many people took make up off (thank goodness because there weren’t enough bathrooms or time for people to put their makeup back on before landing!)

Yes, this. I'm surprised at the amount of people who are doing full skincare routines, brushing teeth, getting changed, spray perfume etc while in the plane loo. It's so annoying to when you're just waking up and know they'll be serving breakfast soon then getting ready to land and you're desperate for a wee in that time but the bathroom's being hogged by someone faffing about like that.

Snappyg666 · 09/02/2026 00:36

Haha yeah "nobody wears make up anymore". Sure. They're just spending ££££ on filler face lifts and mini botox instead...

mathanxiety · 09/02/2026 01:18

I board the plane without makeup, do a quick micellar water wipe down after the meal service, moisturise, brush my teeth, slosh mouthwash, use the loo, wash my hands, and sleep. I don't think I could sleep with makeup on.

I put on makeup in my seat in the morning after washing face, hands, and brushing teeth in the bathroom. There's no way I'd hog the bathroom putting on makeup, or spend one more minute in that cesspit than absolutely necessary.

Pinkissmart · 08/02/2026 19:57

Really? You can’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to go make up free in a semi public place?

Because you and everyone around you will be asleep in their comfy joggers and sweatshirts, hoods up, shoes off, and drool creeping down their chins. Many of your fellow sardines will have taken benadryl to guarantee a few hours of R&R.

Also because nobody will be looking that closely at you.

Lostsadandconfused · 09/02/2026 02:23

Anyone who says they cleanse their face and reapply makeup before landing, are you doing this in the plane toilet?

If so, that’s incredibly rude as people are usually queuing just to have a wee in the ‘morning’.

I save any grooming for when I get off, when I have much more room and won’t inconvenience anyone else.

@thedogdaysareover51 I’m not trying to be difficult or goady. I am 50 and my skin is still greasy, I have a red nose and chin and still have spots. I too look much ‘better’ with make up. But I don’t understand why you would make yourself physically uncomfortable wearing it on a long haul flight. Everyone looks terrible at airports and on flights. Absolutely nobody will be looking at you or judging you. Zero men are worrying about this.

please have a think about why you’re putting yourself through this.

What kind of makeup do you use if it makes you physically uncomfortable?!

You’re coming across as very judgy. It’s perfectly fine to wear make up, nice clothes etc to feel good about ourselves. Doesn’t mean we are wringing our hands in despair and thinking everyone is looking at us.

Anyway, to answer OP’s question, I would remove makeup on the plane and reapply, unless I was travelling economy in which case I’m probably not really sleeping anyway so might not bother with the bedtime routine of taking it off. Would still freshen up in the morning anyway.

mathanxiety · 09/02/2026 03:09

@Lostsadandconfused

I only use the loo, wash hands, and brush teeth in the bathroom. I clean my face in my seat and apply makeup there too.

Why are you assuming people are doing this in the loo? I would be staying in my seat, using wipes etc. don’t want to be in those loos for a second longer than necessary.

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:09

@ilovepixieI actually do care. If I meet any of my friends and they have no make up on I find it quite rude that they couldn’t be bothered 😂

I would rather you thought "lucky woman, she doesn't need make up to look good"

Moulez · 09/02/2026 06:16

No one will be looking or care.

Flatinbed · 09/02/2026 07:05

I am the opposite! I turn up to the airport bare-faced, then prowl around the make up area. First i slather on the serums and creams that I can't afford. Then I go for Chanel les beiges water wash foundation and blusher. (Again way out my price range.) I then use the flight to monitor how well these super-priced products work.

DH has his pint. This gives me half an hour of "fun".

Myeyeisnotokay · 09/02/2026 08:48

@thedogdaysareover51 just wanted to say, I think it's great that you are passionate about makeup and love putting it on just for yourself. It's one of the things that gets said all the time to people low in mood, recovering from illness, or trying to get back into normal life. Try and put some make up on, dress nicely etc every day - It lifts you up, makes you feel better, gives you confidence and can form part of that routine to start the day.
I wish I had time to do my make-up every day! What is your routine?

That being said, it sounds like you're not confident without it - why not? I'm sure if you showed us a photo of you with no make up, we would be able to point out what is beautiful about you. I think I look dog awful without mine, but DH says he actually prefers me without it. Just a thought!
Have a lovely flight!
