Do you remove make up on a longish haul night flight?

We’re flying overnight next Saturday and board the plane at 9.30pm. It’s such a long time since we’ve travelled long haul and overnight I’m not sure what I did before. Would you just keep your make up on and accept the dryness and crustiness the next morning or do you remove it completely then reapply when you get to your destination?
Going make up free for me isn’t an option. I’m 51, white as a ghost with dark circles and some broken veins. No one needs to see that, especially me!

I flew to Australia couple weeks ago from London. I had a little bit on, Powder foundation, little eyeliner and mascara. I just left it as usual and wiped my eyes before landing. Washed all off in transit and then didn't bother with anything for second leg. It's fine to leave it on, your skin will recover.

StarlightLady · 09/02/2026 09:20

I go to the airport “night time ready” so no make up. That’s a job for the next day after a shower.

mismomary · 09/02/2026 09:25

Remove makeup just before boarding and put night cream on. Apply makeup at first opportunity at arrivals airport. You will probably arrive at the baggage carousel at the same time as the baggage and look lovely and fresh.

I always take make up off on the plane, then use it as an opportunity to put on something like a lovely moisturiser, face mask, eye patches etc, loads of hand cream, sleep in it, then take it off, spritz of some sort of refreshing spray, a bit of tinted moisturiser, mascara and a tinted lip balm at other end

I’ve never been brave enough to do a sheet mask on a flight…. I have the Summer Fridays Jet Lag mask ready with all my other bits for flying to Sydney tomorrow night. I enjoy the ritual of doing it and the ritual of putting my kit of bits and pieces together for my hand luggage.

I never do my face in the toilets. Ugh. Just about manage to clean my teeth in there.

I can honestly say I’ve never seen anyone in a face mask or do a full-on cleanse routine on a flight-either business or economy - admittedly those aircraft are huge though.

I wear minimal makeup & keep it on, too much faff taking it off. I do sanitise my hands & use handcream, brush my hair & top up lipstick a couple of times. I do not look my best after a lh flight!

Me neither and I've been flying since 1980 regularly as I lived away.

Nor me. It would annoy me. I know it’s not my business, but I’d think it was twatty. Ditto those ridiculous long tube things women put in their hair to make waves. They look ridiculous and some things need to be done in private. I’m going on a long flight next week, I shall be scanning the cabin for such silliness.

I wear light makeup; tinted moisturizer, liner and mascara, tinted balm. I've kept it on for flights.

Upon arrival, a check to make sure no mascara under eyes, brush teeth and reapply balm. Good to go. A full tidy up can be done at destination.

Cleansing routines are done in the bathroom. This and a full make up reapplication is really common in business class when women are going on to meetings straight off a flight. Have you never been waiting for an age outside a loo for a woman to emerge clutching a chunky make-up bag? What do you think they were doing? If you've never seen that or had to wait or seen people waiting in that situation in business class you have been v. lucky.

I don't wear make up on a night or early morning flight, I also wear my glasses and not my contact lenses as the air con dries my eyes out.

I'm one who usually wears make up but flying is different.

I don’t wear make up on any length of flight. I genuinely don’t understand why you would

This.

thedogdaysareover51 · 10/02/2026 19:24

I wear makeup on a flight because I’ve had make up on in the airport. We’ve got six hours in terminal 5 before our flight and I fancy doing some shopping and going to the Fortnum and Mason’s champagne bar place. No way am I doing all that bare faced!

I use long haul as an opportunity to do a mini facial. I remove make up with wipes, then tone and use a night cream and under eye masks. As we descend I use a tint moisturiser and a bit of blush

thedogdaysareover51 · 10/02/2026 19:43

I watched the Lisa Eldridge video and she makes taking your make up off and applying skincare on the plane seem fun and indulgent. So I’m going to do similar.

@thedogdaysareover51 I’m still interested in the judging people negatively who don’t wear make up.

Is it just ‘friends’ you judge or do you similarly judge women you work with if they don’t wear make up? Are you in any kind of management position? Do you judge men on their grooming as well or more relaxed?

StarlightLady · 11/02/2026 08:58

Just as aside, while some are worrying about makeup, when the doors are first opened on an aircraft after a long haul flight, the stench wafting from the cabin to ground staff is unbelievable. You don’t appreciate it’s there during a flight as everyone is in the dame boat (or aircraft!).

GreenRedFlowers · 11/02/2026 16:43

Interesting! How do you know this? have you worked as ground staff? What's the time frame for the stench to be bad? when do short haul flights turn stinking?

Reminds me of tales of men returning home after months at (? under?) sea on a submarine - it is said that it takes about 2 -3 weeks for the submarine stench on them to ease off.
