Do you remove make up on a longish haul night flight?

We’re flying overnight next Saturday and board the plane at 9.30pm. It’s such a long time since we’ve travelled long haul and overnight I’m not sure what I did before. Would you just keep your make up on and accept the dryness and crustiness the next morning or do you remove it completely then reapply when you get to your destination?
Going make up free for me isn’t an option. I’m 51, white as a ghost with dark circles and some broken veins. No one needs to see that, especially me!

OP explained why she wears makeup. I'm the same - so pale with dark circles that people think I'm ill without makeup, when I'm perfectly fine! I have also bumped into clients at the airport and was glad to look presentable. It's a small world.

OP for long haul flights, I wear minimal makeup and leave it on. For me, eye makeup makes the biggest difference so I have little on my skin and just touch up my eye makeup after sleep. It isn't the best look but survives fairly well. I also usually wear sunglasses for arrival. I take a translucent powder and sometimes a hydrating spray for my skin.

ArtesianWater · 08/02/2026 16:52

Oh, just seen that it's makeup on your skin that you want to wear. In that case I would remove with wipes and reapply something light like a CC cream. Much easier on a plane that eye makeup.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2026 16:53

So that's why there is a long queue at the toilet at 'bedtime' on a aeroplane?

ZoomerBoomer · 08/02/2026 16:56

I’m like you, I love make up and wouldn't walk around the airport without my face on. I look like a pasty faced ailing Victorian without any and the one time I didn’t wear any, I was sent home from work ill, despite my protests that I was fine.

I would never remove on a long haul flight, because my make up bag would be in the case and board light, with just my iPad and use it as a kindle.

I’ve just posted almost the same first paragraph, I always bump into someone I know at the airport, every time!

I wonder if the ‘no make up’ crew understand what it’s like to have invisible eyebrows, lashes and extremely pale skin? I can’t leave the house without makeup because, despite having quite fine features/cheekbones etc, I look like a potato without mascara/blusher

Isn't that just the same as the rest of us?

I'm confused by this. Extremely pale skin is desirable in many cultures around the world. White people specifically are supposed to be naturally pale.

ilovepixie · 08/02/2026 17:02

I never wear make up, I used to when I was younger and going out but I don’t anymore, and no one has ever commented on me not wearing if. Seriously no one cares if you were make up or not.

GameOfJones · 08/02/2026 17:02

I'm one of those people that does their skincare on a long flight. It gives me something to do and makes me feel better if nothing else!

I'll take wipes to clean my face plus a rich moisturiser, some of those under eye patches and I can do some version of a skincare routine. Then a tinted moisturiser, lip balm and mascara for the morning or just before landing.

I definitely wouldn't sleep in my make-up, including on a flight where the air is even more dry.

NonArtArseHouse · 08/02/2026 17:04

Never wear make up long haul or on night flights.

If I did, yes, I’d remove it and slap on moisturiser before sleeping.

You’re travelling long haul on a night flight. Literally, nobody cares!

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:09

@ilovepixieI actually do care. If I meet any of my friends and they have no make up on I find it quite rude that they couldn’t be bothered 😂

Ffs S&B is starting to stray into AIBU territory with the amount of snipey and faux confused replies. So boring.

I don’t check luggage so my make up bag is always with me in my hand luggage, and I order my skin care to the airside boots to collect before boarding so I can usually do a pared back version of my usual routine; make up remover lotion with cotton pads, slip to the toilets for my second cleanse, back to my seat for serum and night cream. In the morning I’ll wash my face when I brush my teeth. I usually apply the day ahead’s make up in the toilets before I clear customs at my destination.

I’m Scottish so yes 🤣 I tint and shape my brows and love a lash lift and tint. If I have the uglies I’ll add some facial fake tan to my moisturiser. I love getting dolled up but it’s about balance isn’t it? Really the only person who will think you look like a “potato” is yourself, literally nobody else notices or cares. And if they do - they aren’t worth thinking about!

You have "main character syndrome."

People do not notice you when you don't wear makeup. No one cares.

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:17

@shuggleswhat I’m trying to say is I care about how I look and I don’t care what strangers at Heathrow airport or anywhere else think of me.
And for those saying no one else cares-I actually do care and judge other people that don’t wear make up. I’d never say anything but it’s how I feel.

What the fuck? Some friend you are!

Time to grow up & work on not being so judgemental. With friends like you who need enemies

I don’t wear make up on any length of flight. I genuinely don’t understand why you would

OP just said why she wears make up

And I secretly judge people who do wear make up, I think it's sad that women feel they have to do it and it often looks awful.

@xanthomelana People do not care about your opinion about wearing makeup or not.

I don't have an opinion on wearing make up or not. Whether you wear makeup or not has absolutely no effect on me or anyone else. That's what I'm saying.

Wow, I never wear makeup and I never thought anyone would be judging me for it. You have opened my eyes

IwanttoWFH · 08/02/2026 17:25

Could you use a facial tanner beforehand to give you a bit of colour? I have one that you mix into moisturiser, so it gives a bit of a “glow” rather than a fake tan appearance.
Also, an eyebrow tint and an eyelash lift and tint makes all the difference.
I wear make up every day for work. I don’t mind putting it on, but find it such a chore to take off! If I can get away with not wearing make up, I will!
I have a 12 hour flight next month, I have no intention of wearing any make up and will be bringing skincare products to give myself a mini pamper (not in the toilet, from my seat!) It will also pass some time!
