Do you remove make up on a longish haul night flight?

We’re flying overnight next Saturday and board the plane at 9.30pm. It’s such a long time since we’ve travelled long haul and overnight I’m not sure what I did before. Would you just keep your make up on and accept the dryness and crustiness the next morning or do you remove it completely then reapply when you get to your destination?
Going make up free for me isn’t an option. I’m 51, white as a ghost with dark circles and some broken veins. No one needs to see that, especially me!

@IwanttoWFH yes I’m going to do exactly this.

OP these days on flights people wear sheet face masks, clothes that look like pyjamas, and basically anything goes. So therefore if you feel better in make up, that is fine too.

@shuggleswhat I’m trying to say is I care about how I look and I don’t care what strangers at Heathrow airport or anywhere else think of me.
And for those saying no one else cares-I actually do care and judge other people that don’t wear make up. I’d never say anything but it’s how I feel.

hi @thedogdaysareover51 - I've travelled long haul a lot for both business and pleasure.
When I go to Asia I do remove make up; I also tie my hair in a silk scrunchie; I put on a face mask once the lights go down too!! Eye masks are also good, plus I drink lots of water. am assuming you will be in comfy clothes, if not, take off belt and put some leggings on, and change bra into a yoga bra. You will sleep better!
Then just before they serve breakfast when it's still quiet and dark on the plane, I go to the loo, and cleanse/ moisturise and clean teeth, have a wash and also change my tshirt and spray on perfume.
my hair always feels better and fresh make up is great. I rarely eat too much of the breakfast - unless it's omelette or rice/ chicken as I can bloat up.
This routine has always helped me land in Asia feeling good x

What a strange (and sexist!) attitude. Do you not have much else to think about? You must be quite a bored and boring person if you're thinking that much about other peoples' lack of makeup.

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:31

@CampanulaMilaof course I’ve got other things to think about. It’s just a fleeting thought but it crosses my mind all the same. I still love my friends and enjoy their company.

@Lilactimes fantastic advice thanks. I’ll pack a scrunchie too. Do you find you sleep on the plane when you travel to Asia?

@HermioneWeasleywe have six hours to kill in Heathrow before our flight so walking about for that length of time without make up is just not an option. I would love to have the confidence not to wear make up but my skin looks greasy and pale without it as I’m blonde and fair skinned. I look ill without it and it’s depressing looking at myself in the mirror. The only day in my life I didn’t wear make up was the day after I gave birth. I love make up!

Edited

Im not sure what the point of the post is then.

you’re going to wear make up. So just do as you normally would - take it off before you go to sleep and reapply when you wake up.
the lights on the plane go off in the middle

Summerbean · 08/02/2026 17:35

I'm older than you and have always worn a bit of makeup on flights but flew last month and my skin is still recovering- horrible dry flaky patches and feeling sore. I will definitely not wear it when I next fly!

Drivingmissrangey · 08/02/2026 17:35

HermioneWeasley · 08/02/2026 16:09

I don’t wear make up on any length of flight. I genuinely don’t understand why you would

Because I’m going straight to work at the other end.

I don’t bother when on holiday though.

Hi @thedogdaysareover51
yes I do find I sleep well. The 9.30pm flights are great. And I usually get 4 or 5 hours in economy . If I fly business I can sleep the whole way!

Have a wonderful time - it's a great time of year to go to Asia x

GoldDuster · 08/02/2026 17:36

I would nip and remove all, when I clean my teeth, definitely. Won't take you a minute. Then you could stick some lipstick and a big pair of sunglasses on at the other end, can't really get away with sunglasses this end at the moment without looking unhinged!

Moisturiser, moisturising eye drops, a refillable water bottle of a decent size you can fill up and chug, hand cream (Weleda Skin Food is my all purpose and gets slapped on everywhere and is great as a flight cream) and some comfy socks and slip on shoes so you can kick them off and get as comfy as it is possible to be.

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:36

@MJagain the point of the post was to ask others what they do regarding taking make up off or keeping it on and maybe to get some tips on quick make up application on the flight or products that would be good to pack.
My question wasn’t whether I should wear make up or not. Maybe I should have been more specific in my post.

I had some sympathy with you wanting to look your best until you said you judge people who don’t wear makeup.

I pick comfort over anything else and never wear make up or even my jewellery apart from my wedding ring flying so I don’t feel restricted.

user1471548941 · 08/02/2026 17:40

I hear you about being blonde and pale! I’m also a very committed make up wearer. However, it wasn’t worth arriving on holiday with a break out from wearing it on the plane! So barefaced on the plane, apply moisturiser before and after sleeping on the flight take some decent concealer to whack on in the morning! It will be dark and everyone will be sleeping. And most people in airports have had crap sleep and feel like they look crap! If you’re desperate to wear it in the airport, I’d still remove after boarding!

ShebaQueen · 08/02/2026 17:42

I always take mine off when the lights go down, put on a sheet mask and try to sleep - I rarely succeed sadly! Then I reapply makeup before landing - I do this in my seat so as not to hog the loo. I wear makeup for myself and feel more confident wearing it, I don't wear loads, but my skintone is uneven and I have melasma, Hope you have a good trip @thedogdaysareover51

Gingercar · 08/02/2026 17:50

I was cabin crew for over two decades and wore make up on the plane for hours and hours. Not many people took make up off (thank goodness because there weren’t enough bathrooms or time for people to put their makeup back on before landing!)

hattie43 · 08/02/2026 17:51

HermioneWeasley · 08/02/2026 16:09

Maybe to give confidence if you don’t have good skin would be one reason .

ArtesianWater · 08/02/2026 17:59

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/02/2026 16:53

So that's why there is a long queue at the toilet at 'bedtime' on a aeroplane?

Not in my case. I only ever fly long haul for work and then I'm fortunate enough to be in business, which means there is plenty of room to do anything I need privately in my pod seat without bothering anyone. The only thing I use the bathroom for is a wee and to clean my teeth.

Gervhill · 08/02/2026 18:03

I’m also self-conscious of my skin and always wear at least a tinted moisturiser and concealer. For night flights I usually take it off with some face wipes after boarding, moisturise and reapply before disembarking. Recently I did a long day and into night flight and put on a hydrating foundation as well as blusher and it lasted well and nothing horrendous happened to my skin whatsoever.

tedibear · 08/02/2026 18:09

I just leave it on. I’m not the type to go around completely make up free. Waterproof mascara wld be a must at least if I fall asleep not worrying about it being everywhere.

I cldnt be bothered with the faf of taking it off to try and put it on again before landing. I’d likely not get the chance to reapply it anyway as have young kids.

AzureRose · 08/02/2026 18:10

I wouldn't wear it and would put decent moisturiser on

travailtotravel · 08/02/2026 18:11

Oh god, no get on bear skinned for anything over 2 hours ... moisturiser all the way and a zhuzz before you get off!

Judging women for not wearing make up is wild!

I don’t actually know anyone who wears make up on a daily basis anymore.

I find it quite aging. And dated.

More and more people are wearing less make up, especially younger generations.

The focus seems to be on skin care. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy doing make up and will wear it to events, nights out, on holiday etc.

But I spend far too much money on my face these days to cover it up every day with make up.

yorkshiretoffee · 08/02/2026 18:15

thedogdaysareover51 · 08/02/2026 17:09

@ilovepixieI actually do care. If I meet any of my friends and they have no make up on I find it quite rude that they couldn’t be bothered 😂

Wow! This deserves a thread in its own right!
