Hair change too drastic. Wtf have I done?

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 13:39

I know it's just hair and it will grow back. That was my reasoning for doing it in the first place. I have a lot going on and I was just not washing my hair or taking care of it properly.

It was about 6 to 8 inches past my shoulders and dyed red. I couldn't keep up with the maintenance of it
And I felt like I had too much going on in my life to deal with such long hair.

After watching too many youtube videos, I decided to give myself a bob which obviously went very wrong and I ended up at the hairdresses. He decided that a pixie (between a bob and pixie) would be god for me and low maintenance, but he's basically just giving me a pixie with a fringe.

With my red hair, I was getting Sharon Osbourne vibes. So I try to put a brown dye over the top but it didn't take at all! so I ended up using a black dye I had in my bathroom.

So now I have Kris Kardashian vibes.

I just hate it so much. It's too dark for me.And I feel like all my femininity has gone.

I feel Ive aged myself 15 years.

I have a schwarzkopf colour remover on the way to try and get the black out.

I feel so stupid, my confidence has dropped. My kids were shocked.

DH keeps saying it looks 'cute'but I know he loved my long hair and I can just tell he doesn't really like it but he is absolutely teying to reassure me 🤣

Oh lord. Why did I do it??? 🤣😭😭

I think that looks lovely!

I don't really wear make up, I feel daft if I do. I just wear mascara, a liquid eyeliner (catseye) and blush.

Thanks for the calming replies.

I actually feel a lot better now.

I love it! It’s a great cut and looks to suit your face shape style.

Please leave it, my friend went through a similar series of hair colours and ended up with frazzled destroyed hair. She is six months into hair extensions which have cost her 1000s in the initial and repeat appointments.

OverlyFragrant · 23/01/2026 17:58

Are you kidding, that looks great.

LamentableShoes · 23/01/2026 18:02

Are you kidding op - I would have given my left arm for that haircut when I was younger!

I can't fathom why you made 4 fuckups to your hair in quick succession.

I can completely understand it. This poster does not think like me....!

YourKonstantine · 23/01/2026 14:03

Please stop DIYing. This is why you’re in this mess!

See a hairdresser for a professional colour stripping and having something softer and close to your natural colour for low maintenance.

do you know how much salons charge for colour treatments?. A hat will be a much cheaper option!

ohfourfoxache · 23/01/2026 18:02

Oh please, please don’t worry, it’s a very cute cut

It probably feels more extreme than it really is, so please try not to worry x

AnonSugar · 23/01/2026 18:10

OP, it really is a nice cut and colour.

Ebok1990 · 23/01/2026 18:10

You look like a pencil...
You don't! Honest! It's a Fleabag joke, just incase you don't get the reference!
As per a pp, it looks French and very cute!
Stop panicking, it honestly looks great.

Wickedlittledancer · 23/01/2026 18:11

Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting that, it is lovely, genuinely.

pouletvous · 23/01/2026 18:11

You live and learn OP

get a wig?

from experience, long hair is easier ti manage than a bob or short hair

long hair only needs a wash and brush and can be tird back

bob needs blow dry and styling

pixie probably needs some faff depending on hair
type

why not go for natural colour if you want low
maintenance? Stop box dying

PatsFishTank · 23/01/2026 13:55

You'll get used to it and it will grow.

I'm currently bald from chemo and likely to be for some time so it's all relative.

Ohhhh I feel your pain - I remember it well. Are you finished your treatment yet?

It is exciting when it starts coming back, I remember the joy of seeing beautiful little eyelash stubs appear.

Allisnotlost1 · 23/01/2026 18:16

It looks really cute! Give it a few days and you might grow to love it. It doesn’t look too dark either.

Overtheatlantic · 23/01/2026 18:16

I bet you look adorable. I recently got mine dyed too dark and the head and shoulders helped with the worst of it. Gave it a warmer brown. Still dark but softer. The cut is so cool!

WoollyRosebud · 23/01/2026 18:16

MissMuffot · 23/01/2026 14:20

Please can people be kind.

I was put under a 24hr psych hold and realeased recently . I just couldnt keep up with my hair and i thought it would be liberating :(

Short hair is liberating and will grow back as long as you are patient. I did similar only mine was because my usual hairdresser mucked up my hair. I had been debating joining the pixie troop for a while and it pushed me into the decision to go ahead. Short hair can be played with and lots of different looks created.

I bet you look lovely OP so rock your new look

glad you are feeling better. I think your hair looks fabulous. If you have been used to long red hair with no fringe then a short very dark hair with a fringe is going to take a lot of getting used to do I can understand your concerns.

Personally I love short hair….currently mine is much much shorter than yours.

I know you don’t wear much make-up but if you don’t already, focus on your eyebrows for balance.

Beanies, berets and mini claw clips are also your friend if you decide you want to grow your hair out.

But honestly, I think it looks great.

Imicola · 23/01/2026 18:17

That looks like a really nice style, honestly. I was expecting something awful but I think it looks pretty good. Even the colour.

SummerHouse · 23/01/2026 18:17

Wow! It looks fab op. Give it a few days. The cut and colour look spectacular and however you feel, it's better than combing out matted hair so it had to be done. No mistakes to see here.

It’s very Lilly Allen - in a good way. I bet it looks lovely and edgy with a cat eye.

AmpleSwan · 23/01/2026 18:20

Very young Winona Ryder! I think it looks great!

SealHouse · 23/01/2026 18:21

OP that pixie cut is gorgeous! It's probably just a shock because it's so different to what you had

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not use that colour remover stuff.... take it from another diy-hairdresser (never again) who inflicted a similar box dye disaster on her hair years ago. I used a remover I bought online, it totally wrecked my hair, took years to get the condition back, plus my hair smelled like rotten eggs for months after using it.

OP this looks way better than you had described! It’s is just a shock so stop freaking out and just relax with it for a week. It’s actually really cute.

jimmypug · 23/01/2026 18:23

I love it. Manga girl/ Ramona Flowers/90s Winona vibes. Have you tried a little black knitted beret with it? Maybe some gold hoops- with cats eye liner and minimal other makeup it would look really cool: I’m guessing you have a bit of an alternative vibe so would def suit that x

SpanielLife · 23/01/2026 18:23

That is super cute! I know it's so different from what you had that you can't see it, but you have gorgeous hair!

I think this looks absolutely gorgeous. From what I can see you've got perfect bone structure for it and I think the colour really suits the cut. Don't strip it just yet - give yourself a few days to get used to it. In a few months you'll have a mega chic little French bob!

woolfibre100 · 23/01/2026 18:25

I agree with all the previous posters saying that this cut looks good – it genuinely suits you and your colouring. It's not too dark for your colouring, and the cut looks like it was done by a technically accomplished hairdresser.

Definitely don't do anything else to the colour yourself – give your hair a chance to settle after all those colour treatments. Frequent conditioning masks will help to look after it - cheapie own label supermarket brand would be fine.

I think this cut will grow out well, too.

Wishing you all the best for continuing to feel better as the days and weeks pass.
