Size 14 wide leg jeans that don’t make me look like a clown? 🤡

I’m early 40s, relatively new mum, and really want to get into the wider leg jeans trend. I’m a size 14 and carry a lot of weight on my bum and thighs. So my current Levi ‘straight leg’ jeans actually look more skintight than they do on the model.

I tried some wide leg jeans on yesterday and honestly looked like I’d escaped from the circus. I looked, frankly, ridiculous.

Where can I go to get age- and shape-appropriate jeans?

One final thing, a high rise is a must. Cannot be mid or low rise.

I have just got some from sainsburys which I love. I'm short (5 foot) and the short ones are a smidge too long but are a great shape

Dimplydompley · 18/01/2026 17:29

These are the ones I tried on, Levi Cinch Baggy jeans.

I’m 5’6” with relatively long legs, but these just made me look dumpy!

And I think in order to get the width for my thighs, they were ridiculously wide below the knee?

They

Quite honestly I think only tall willowy people can wear wide leg trousers and look really good in them.
I'm a size 10 and I can't wear them, I'm not tall enough and carry what weight I do have on my bum so they make me look like a clown too.

Auroraborealisnorthernlights · 18/01/2026 17:33

Seasalt Wide Leg jeans are good, definitely less clown- like on me than the others I tried on.

user593 · 18/01/2026 17:35

They’re not exactly wide leg but the M&S carrot jeans are very wearable.

Viviennemary · 18/01/2026 17:38

I think those wide leg jeans are very unflattering for a lot of folk. They're awful. Buy something that looks good. Don't be a sheep.

Britpopbaby · 18/01/2026 17:40

M&S. Less than £40

Talipesmum · 18/01/2026 17:46

I tried on so so many pairs recently. I’m a size 18 so quite a bit broader than you! It really takes a lot of attempts to get some that work - and of course I think they’re much more likely to work if one is naturally sylph-like! But, here are the ones I found that were much much nicer on me than the others:

Dark Blue Patch Pocket Wide Leg Jeans

and

Rinse Blue High Rise Stretch Wide Leg Jeans

Both had slightly softer fabric so they draped a little bit more than ones that seemed to be large tunnels on my legs. I didn’t buy the patch pocket ones in the end as I thought the pockets would annoy me, but my relative turned up in them at Xmas and she loves them.

I think you should try some barrel leg jeans. You don’t have to go massive but they might help with the shape

myladyjane · 18/01/2026 18:02

Second carrot leg from M&S. I like my halara wide legs but wanted a pair with a proper waistband. Tried loads of different pairs of wide leg and barrel and these worked best for me. Short 12/14 with a tummy

Nitgel · 18/01/2026 18:17

How.about bootcut?.m and s have Eva. They're really flattering.

I’d recommend these - I think they are wonderful!

I’m 43, size 12-14 and I love River Island Straight leg x

Puppylucky · 18/01/2026 18:38

I also think it's a case of reframing your eye. I think you look really good in those jeans. You don't look like a clown and if you feel you look dumpy then just wear with a low heel.

I’ve got these and love them.

HotMummaSummer · 18/01/2026 18:46

I agree with people saying m&s, I like their barrel leg. I am between a 12 and 14 but definitely a m&s 12 as they come up big. I'm 5"6 with quite long legs so I usually go for 12 long.
I also feel I look silly in wide leg. They just don't work with my wife hips 😭

I think you look good in them. A shorter top would look better though.

They take a bit of getting used to after skinnies, but the comfort factor alone makes it worth it

Kyogo67 · 18/01/2026 18:49

Carrot leg jeans from M&S are great. I’m similar size to you and they feel modern and not clown like

SirChenjins · 18/01/2026 18:49

I'm 5 foot 2 and wear them - I don't think I look like a clown, but maybe I'm naive! I think the trick is to wear them with a crop jump so it elongates you, and don't wear them too wide or long. I don't think you look like a clown in that photo though - maybe you're just not used to them? I've just started wearing barrel jeans and have gone from thinking I look ridiculous to thinking I look pretty good in them - but had to play about with footwear and tge proportions of my tops and jackets before I got it right. Maybe try them too?

PuppyMonkey · 18/01/2026 18:53

Nobody looks good in wide leg jeans. Even the model in that M&S photo only looks good because it’s a side shot and you can’t see the wide leg jeans. Grin
