Size 14 wide leg jeans that don’t make me look like a clown? 🤡

I’m early 40s, relatively new mum, and really want to get into the wider leg jeans trend. I’m a size 14 and carry a lot of weight on my bum and thighs. So my current Levi ‘straight leg’ jeans actually look more skintight than they do on the model.

I tried some wide leg jeans on yesterday and honestly looked like I’d escaped from the circus. I looked, frankly, ridiculous.

Where can I go to get age- and shape-appropriate jeans?

One final thing, a high rise is a must. Cannot be mid or low rise.

I think until you get used to them, every pair will feel clowny. Its a very different look if you are used to tighter legs.

Please don't do barrel legs, everybody looks like bow legged sailors.

Pinkbox · 19/01/2026 15:06

I'm also trying to make the move from skinnies (actually jeggings because my rounded tum used to make any jeans buttons damage my tops) now that I've lost weight. I like the look of wide legs but have found they just drown and puddle round round my feet (I am 5ft4.5).

I've just received some column jeans I got from Vinted, which I think are supposed to be looser straight legs. Unfortunately as a PP said, they aren't as fitted round the bum as they could be, so I look like a rectangle. Not sure I am keeping them...

Someone might already have suggested these, but saw
thiis morning and thought of your post. They have a curve in them

I have these! They are lovely and soft, v flattering back pockets.... The sizing is crazy generous though. I haven't managed to wear them yet.

My pair claim to be 30 inches at the waist but are actually 34 inches!

They are very baggy as well. I find Uniqlo stuff scales up the bagginess far too much in the larger sizes. Maybe it's just me, but I want to conceal some of my "thic" thighs under the baggy shape, I don't need the same amount of extra flap on top. It might look cute on petite people but not on me!

Fibrous · 19/01/2026 16:26

I'm sticking with my skinny jeans, and I'm unrepentant.

lindyloo57 · 19/01/2026 16:44

I'm 65 and 5ft2 i have only this last year got out of skinnies, what works for me are the marks front pocket jeans wide leg last years I have black in 10 short, marks boot cut I have black size 10 short and the pale blue, next pull on wide leg jeans £29 in black size 12 petite, I know most say they come up big, but I found the opposite, when I finally got hold of the blue in them same size they were too tight on the waist, and lastly marks boyfriend jeans, but i tried 3 different pair to get the best fit as the colours all fitted me differently,

lindyloo57 · 19/01/2026 16:46

Just wanted to add I did try the barrel jeans, but I didn't like them on me, I even brought but then returned the barrel joggers that they do.

I have ended up in Cos for my wide legged jeans. These are a more tailored version. I have some of their more slouchy ones that although high waisted are looser around the mid sections. IMO they need to cover the ankle completely and almost touch the floor.

These types of jeans don’t have much stretch and will be 100% cotton. So it really pays to try things on again and again. But when you get the right pair and look they are comfortable.

Dragonscaledaisy · 19/01/2026 17:16

Good American - just fabulous. Plenty of stretch and sooooo flattering.

Rosebud987 · 19/01/2026 17:51

I live in these next ones!

have done for over 12 months now they have seen me through a 6 stone weight loss journey and each size have been great! Love them

Snugglything · 19/01/2026 17:58

I know you said low rise is out and I honestly thought my low rise jeans days were over (I am 54 and post menopausal) but I got the low rise parallel jeans from Motel and I LOVE them! My 15 year old DSD told me about them as she has two pairs and even approved them when I showed her them on. They’re so comfy too. I got size 32 waist and 30 leg. I’m a size 12 but sized up in case they wouldn’t fit round my meno belly and they’re perfect. Now my favourite jeans ever.

PARALLEL JEANS

The Parallel jean offer an 90's inspired baggy fit with a high or low-waist, blue or black, plus every wash in between. An essential staple for everyday rotation.

If you are short and go even wider they eventually stop being clown-like and basically become full-length-skirt culottes. Although at that point they aren't really on trend for being wide leg jeans anymore either....

HorsesAreRunningOn3LegsTonight · 19/01/2026 19:38

I’m a size 16 and 5’4” and short legged. i think these just don’t suit us shorties, unless we are about a size 8.
i look best in Next cropped leggings , which are just the right length on me to look like full length!
I too would love to wear wide legged trousers , but accept they just will never ever suit me.

Happyjoe · 19/01/2026 23:33

Cannot wait til the wide leg jean fad is over. And please someone, bring back some normal length tops?!

FlashingFairyLight · 19/01/2026 23:49

Im built like you OP.

I realised wide leg jeans were not for me first time round in... 2004?
I console myself that they're for willowy snake hipped youths only.

I have a pair of F&F high rise flares which are awesome (but no longer on sale 😭) and two pairs of boot cuts from Next (navy cord & black trousers) which look fabulous and still give a wide leg look.

Don't try & make something work it just to follow fashion.... OR say fuck it and wear what you love.

Dimplydompley · 20/01/2026 00:00

Right then, I was able to have a verrry quick try on today, and the below Marks ones seemed like they could be okay. So I bought them with the intention to try them on at home and see if I can make them look good with some outfits.

Two things… 1) I agree with the poster who said they need to be long! So I got the 14L.

  1. I’ve realised my trusty Skechers slip ins - which have been a godsend on mat leave - simply don’t cut it with this look 😆

So for your next task, oh wise ones… Please tell me what trainers to buy to help me look cutting edge and stylish! Well, as cutting edge and stylish as is possible while rocking a mum tum in a pair of size 14 M&S jeans… 🙈

By the way, I will still be looking at all the other jeans links and brands too, today’s purchase was definitely one of convenience but I’m still open to testing out other pairs/brands!

Oh and I forgot to say that when I put my jeggings back on in the changing room, ugh, honestly, I thought they looked so unflattering that if I was trying them on to buy, I wouldn’t have bought them! I probably should bin them.
