Nooooo don't do it! They are excellent for what they're designed for..... changing under after swimming. But wearing them as a coat is the equivalent of wearing your dressing gown as a coat on a cold day. You must know you'll end up on the Facebook group if you're using the term Dry Robe Wanker!

I love mine for after swimming or kayaking but it’s too cumbersome for walking far in, the sleeves are annoying.

do you swim during winter ? where on the coast pls?

Yes, I swim year round, SE coast in a small swimming group. More getting in and out than actual swimming at this time of year though. It was 6.5'c this morning. We just wear swim wear and in winter, I treat myself to a beanie, gloves and booties in the water 🥶

I like the M&S good move range.

As mentioned up thread, the Oodie coat is a good alternative. I love mine, huge pockets for dog treats/poo bags and performs very well in the wet if it’s not windy. The one draw back is the hood, it’s huge and great for cold, crisp days but in the wind and obvs if wet and windy, it’s bloody infuriating! No adjustable ties to secure so the hood flaps around, it’s very annoying.

Lemonyyy · 29/12/2025 14:16

Have one for swimming in the lake but have ended up using it for dog walks as well. It’s great, probably too warm if you get hot but for chilly mortals it is perfect. DS has one too now because he gets so cold and it means he can have to stamina to stay out on a longer walk as he doesn’t end up shivering 5km in.

I went for the following coat after looking for one for dog walking, it was recommended on here and is fab. I got mine from Very as it was in the sale but depending on the colour you can get them cheaper on Seasalt at the moment.

Edited

I like that and its the colour I was after (burgundy) but they only have a size 10. I am a 10 in tops but i like to layer up and think it will be too tight.

I will see if its in stock anywhere else

I’ve got a Regatta one and never been wild water swimming in my life 🤣 I bought mine mainly for camping and festivals as it’s great for keeping completely dry. Also wear it with wellies for winter dog walks. It’s very warm and waterproof and I can’t fault it

Ah sorry - can't delete my post, when you click on the size it says not available :(

Looks like all sizes in stock here https://www.curvissa.co.uk/products/seasalt-cornwall-purple-janelle-waterproof-raincoat//A-25E7898

There are so many better coats about

dry robes are big and warm but if you move in them are they not either sweaty or too warm or too much air coming in, or just bulky?

a ski jacket would almost make more sense being properly waterproof and at least also breathable

but if you love it get it and enjoy it

i walk a lot and whilst I love a (borrowed 😄) dry robe after a sea swim, I’d not go for a walk in one. I prefer my Seasalt Janelle for cold wet windy days

I've got one of these from Tog24. Never been a fan of a really puffy coat. It's quite thin (not sure that's the right word because that suggests poor quality which it's not) but insulated and is fleece lined so lovely and warm and comes about 3/4 down my legs so great for keeping wind off you. I use it for walking with my pram and dog. It's only water repellent rather than waterproof though so not sure if that would be an issue. It also comes with a year's warranty which is great. I broke the zip on mine and they fixed and returned it within days. I've become so attached to my coat that those few days it was gone felt like the longest ever. Couldn't fault their customer service. Contemplating buying another colour as a back up.

Depends if you class yourself as a furbaby owner that thinks they go for dog walks or a proper dog owner that goes on actual dog walks.

If you get a dry robe you may as well go the whole hog and get the white trainers or uggs to go with it and complain when they get mud on them.

No proper dog owner I know would be seen dead in one because they're stupid and impractical for proper dog walking.

RunningJo · 29/12/2025 16:50

Love mine for after a run when I’m cold and wet. I can strip off and put some dry clothes on without getting arrested 🤣
Perfect for that, but I wouldn’t walk my dog in it. Too big, too much material. I can’t imagine trekking miles over fields wearing a dry robe, as much as I love it.

I’m yet to find the perfect dog walking jacket that’s waterproof and breathable.

Im absolutely a fur baby owner. Already said I own an elderly chihuahua and pug, they can't walk far anymore✌️

Im even considering a DOG PRAM 🤣🤣🤣

I have two Red ones. One is dark and I use it as a winter coat. There are no doubt better coats for rain and better coats for cold, but I have never had anything better at coping with both at the same time. They now do a slimline version which would be better as a coat than mine is. I wouldn’t wear it for a long walk, as it a bit cumbersome as others have said. But then I don’t go for long walks when it is cold and wet!

I also have a lighter one which I use for its intended purpose. There’s nothing better than having an early evening swim in the summer and then sitting outside wrapped up warm eating fish and chips as the sun goes down!

AngeloMysterioso · 29/12/2025 18:04

Just get a big coat? Why does it need to be a dry robe?

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 29/12/2025 18:07

I've got a Dry Robe that I wear after sea swimming in winter. I love it. I've even got a pair of (fake) fur lined crocs I wear on the beach as well.

But I never use the Dry Robe for dog walks. It's far too heavy, completely impractical when twat dog takes off after a deer and I have to chase him, and far too hot.

I wear a SeaSalt coat I bought from Vinted for dog walks at this time of year. It's a Size 16 (I'm a 10/12) which means I can layer underneath it. Much more practical.

EastCoastDweller · 29/12/2025 18:13

I got one (not DryRobe branded a cheaper look a like) a few years ago as I was going sea swimming. The sea swimming didn't last but I love my dryrobe and have found I wear it all the time in the winter. It is so warm and comfortable. Not at all stylish but I don't care. I do have smarter winter coats but just don't reach for them.

It is a bit bulky to carry but surprisingly light on.

Go for it OP.

The M&S waxed car coat is good for being long, warm and waterproof and layering other stuff under it, without being bulky.

Ive got the freespirit version of the dry robe and its fantastic for walking in, lots of room for maneuvering, i wear it when im dealing with the horses. It has really deep zip up pockets. It was about £50 so cheaper than the official dry robes.

Doesn't look stylish but also use it for camping and am normally covered in mud/horse mank so that doesn't bother me. Also saving up to become a tent box wanker, so will just add it to the wankery style! :-)
