I got one for swimming, though I have also spent many hours on the touch line in it while watching the children play rugby. I couldn’t give a flying fig what other people think of it; it keeps me warm and modest!

Honestly, I am a bit shocked by the profligacy of people who think that you should buy a dryrobe for swimming and then a different brand of warm hooded waterproof coat for dog walking. It seems like a ridiculous waste of money, resources, and space just because you don't want some random stranger to think less of you, and just strikes me as insecure.

A dry robe is not really a coat, they’re not really practical as coats.
Not buying another waterproof coat because you have a dry robe is kind of like not buying a long warm cardigan because you have a dressing gown.

It keeps me warm. It keeps me dry. I'm not sure how they're not practical as coats?

It isn't about what people think, it is practicality and having a suitable coat for the job.

I have a dry robe type coat (equestrian equivalent for horsey activities), I love it and wear it regularly. I am quite happy to be seen in it at the supermarket or whatever but it has its limitations. If I'm going for a walk, driving somewhere, want to look respectable or don't want to wear a million layers my seasalt janelle is far superior due to the higher technical specification and better fit. For serious hiking I have a Paramo Alto which is designed for mountain activities.

I wouldn't have bought a robe type coat for walking about, it's purpose is keeping me warm and dry when standing around, keeping me clean when doing mucky jobs, keeping me warm and dry when doing long slow fittening rides in poor weather, and going on top of show gear to keep warm between classes.

For dog walking on cool, wet days, I have an Ilse Jacobson raincoat (via Vinted) that I wear over a Uniqlo lightweight insulated jacket. If it is properly cold and wet, I wear a waterproof, down North Face coat that I bought for £50 from Vinted. Dryrobes don’t strike me as particularly practical for walking dogs - all that fabric could be quite cumbersome, especially if caught by the wind!

Clambering over stiles, shimmying through tight gaps in hedges (without it getting caught on brambles), carrying a rucksack. They were originally designed for changing under, hence the wide sleeves etc.
I prefer a more fitted coat for hiking. I like that it can be easily adjusted for the weather and how warm/cold I'm feeling. I like all the pockets.
I am pretty slim so I'd get three of me in a dryrobe. I don't want all that bulk while I'm walking about.

CraftandGlamour · 01/01/2026 11:24

Before Christmas I purchased a Red Slimline parka. It is excellent and so very warm. I was Christmas gifted a Wild Moose change robe for swimming (gave it a run around the field too, with the dogs). The change robe, if I didn't know better, is good enough but not as warm as my lovely new parka. I think, unless you plan on using it as a changing robe, I'd get a coat, because they are quite cumbersome and not hugely flattering.

Mine is massive because I need to get changed under it. It would keep me warm and dry but it’s too cumbersome and heavy for walking any particular distance in. The sleeves are huge and get in the way. I feel like when I was a kid wearing my Dads coat when I’m in it!
Maybe if I bought it for the purpose of walking I’d have got a smaller one and would feel different but I bought it with the aim of not showing my cold arse after swimming!

Gettingbysomehow · 01/01/2026 12:05

I wouldn't get one purely because they are so massive. I don't actually care if anyone thinks they are wankery or not. I just don't like the bulk of it. I prefer a bum covering jacket for walking that doesn't impede my legs so I can see where Im going as Im usually in woods.
I do wild swimming but I've always got changed in a massive towel that I sewed together and elasticated round the neck then chucked in the boot.

Try the Carhartt sherpa lined shirts. Much more stylish. Hugely warm. Get it over sized. I bought mine from vinted.

Londontown12 · 01/01/2026 12:09

I don't own one !
I wear a big long padded windproof and below zero proof rain proof coat from Zara when I walk my dog in the winter it's absolutely been the best coat for cold weather wet weather and windy weather !
I just like to be able to walk in comfort not bothered about it looking stylish I'm on a dog walk ! Wear what is most comfortable for u x

cathyandclaire · 01/01/2026 16:09

I have one- I got a kid's size one so not as massive. I use it when in the campervan in the rain/ walking with the dog/ on the beach - am officially a wanker ( although it's not camo!)

NewGoldFox · 01/01/2026 20:22

Love mine. It’s huge with spacious pockets and keeps the wind off me. I can sit in the sand and stay cosy.

I think Drywalks coats are better all round for dog walking than dry robes.

This is what I’m looking at and can’t decide. I do need to see my feet and I don’t want to get to warm either

Mmimmyokay · 03/01/2026 13:53

For anyone interested I ordered this coat in a 12 and a 14 (I am size 10) so it had that baggy quality.

I think I will keep the 14 ad it has waist toggles to cinch in the waist a bit.

It is not fleece lined or thick but as its baggy i can wear a thick fleece underneath.

Am happy with it for the price. Hood is good size and it is long.

I have an outdoor oodie which is not a dry robe but is like them. It's MASSIVE. I love it though. Huge pockets and super cosy. But I do walk slowly. If you are fit and healthy and get a good pace going on your dog walks you might do better with a normal coat.

I’ve got an oodie coat too. I don’t think it’s a dry robe as such. But it’s big and cozy. It’s black on outside and lovely leopard inside. Excellent quality. Got it for Xmas a year ago and love it for dog walks etc.

henlake7 · 09/01/2026 21:31

Finally had reason to test out my dry robe and I'm giving it a 10/10!
Was going to the cinema which involves an hour walk to get there in freezing rain and strong winds today. Also needed to keep my huge bag (containing all my snacks, drinks and cardie) dry.
Arrived at the cinema toasty warm and dry and had plenty of room to keep bag dry under my coat. Perfect.

Did I look like a prat? Yes, absolutely!😅but I didn't care coz of the aforementioned toasty warm dryness.
I Def wouldn't wear it as a style choice, but for certain specific bad weather situations it will be great.

FairViewRosie25 · 09/01/2026 21:38

I think I’d love one for dog walks. Currently have a Ryedale coat that I wear with a sweatshirt And hoodie underneath

HollywoodTease · 09/01/2026 22:54

Mmimmyokay · 29/12/2025 13:04

Someone please help me find a raincoat then 😭😭

Under £100
Knee length or below
Some kind or warm lining
Hooded
Waterproof

Tesco is your friend....

I just bought one of these but in proper leopard print. It's waterproof, fur lined, has zipped pockets and a hood, and is very lightweight.

I ended up going down a size as, like a dry robe, it's quite roomy. Room for a big jumper or even a thinner jacket underneath.

Oh, just saw your post about the Seasalt one, never mind!

henlake7 · 10/01/2026 13:43

That coat looks awesome for really cold days, not very water proof though so not great for very rainy weather (or if you are going to be very active as it looks very warm).
Excellent 'standing around' coat though!😆

hmums · 10/01/2026 13:57

I’ve just received my drywalks coat . Had a mile and half walk today with just a T-shirt under . I went for the all seasons which is the lighter fleece . Impressed so far

LaurieFairyCake · 10/01/2026 14:00

I bought a kids one, fits anyone under a size 12 (its age 10-14yrs)
