Too old for pinafore dress?

I really like this dress from Nobody’s child but just not sure if I’m too old for this. I’m 45, around 7 stones and 5 2”. I normally wear jeans and knits so this look is very different to my usual style.

I know we can wear what we want but I’m unsure!

I'm 54 and a size 12 and I often wear a dress like that over a roll neck - I'd probably call it a shift dress which sounds more grown up! Nobody's child have a similar one, with embroidery, which i fancy but do not need! So I say go for it.

Coloursofwaves · 12/11/2025 17:06

Thanks @TheLemonOtter it will look great with a roll neck! And sounds better calling it a shift dress!

I have about 4 Nobody’s Child pinafore dresses. I’m 44.

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 17:32

I wear pinafores and I'm older than you by a decade. They are easy to wear - t-shirt or roll-neck (or blouse) underneath.
They ride up when you sit down, so wear opaque tights unless you like flashing your knickers.

Coloursofwaves · 12/11/2025 17:32

@weaselpatrol oh wow! Their clothes are gorgeous

@UpMyself thanks for the tights tip

What do you ladies do for footwear? - knee high boots in the winter?

I’m similar size and age to you - I love that dress and would happily wear it.

bridgetreilly · 12/11/2025 17:45

Pinafores are fine. That dress looks very short and with a weird hem, so I definitely second the recommendation for opaques tights.

Knee high boots would look great with it.

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 17:49

@Coloursofwaves , I wear Solovair dealer boots (like DM chelseas) or astronauts, or black derby shoes (like smart men's shoes) with mine. I've got knee boots but not tried wearing them, probably because they're not black.
The dresses vary from shift style to apron style and dungaree style.

Black flat knee boots might look a bit welly-like.

Fleur405 · 12/11/2025 17:56

Im 44, 5ft, 7 stone and wearing a black cord pinafore style dress (from M&S) right now. I don’t understand the concept of being “too old” to wear it. I’ll wear whatever I like!

Widebumtown · 12/11/2025 18:02

I always think anyone over 18 looks odd in them. They remind me too much of outfits children wore in the 80s and I can’t get on board. Pinafores and dungarees infantilise grown women. However that is purely my own opinion and I would never voice IRL. If you like it wear it.

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 18:03

I don't wear what I like if what I like doesn't like me.
The trench coat that I got despite being told I was not tall enough to suit one did nothing for me.

@Widebumtown , maybe I look odd anyway.

MoominMai · 12/11/2025 18:06

Im a petite 52 year old and I’ve worn them for last decade with no intention of giving them up! I always wear a high neck and long sleeved neutral top under mine and generally pair with knee high flat boots - not the chunky goth/welly types but the more slimline dressy types. I prefer flat boots because mine are all just above the knee and wearing high heeled boots personally for me is just a bit too much for a shorter hem - I prefer my higher heeled boots for over the knee skirts and dresses.

Very versatile as well as you can also throw a cropped jumper over and it looks like a skirt and top combo 🙂.

calmag · 12/11/2025 18:06

I think these days as long as you can pull it off anything goes so if you love it get it!

Coloursofwaves · 12/11/2025 18:08

Thanks everyone. The petite size 8 is out of stock but I’ve ordered the regular 8🤞🏻

@UpMyself thank you for the boots ideas. Solovair boots look great! I have very skinny calves (compared to the rest of me) so I that’s why I was looking at knee high. I have knee high boots with heels

It's lovely!! Absolutely you can wear it!

Coloursofwaves · 12/11/2025 18:11

@MoominMai that’s a great idea with a cropped jumper! I can get more wear out if it

OP posts:
MidnightMeltdown · 12/11/2025 18:13

I’m younger than you and I wouldn’t wear it. Not because it’s a pinafore dress, but because it’s so incredibly short. Plus the V going up to your bits! 😳

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 18:15

I have knee high boots with heels I'd like some but I have far too many shoes.
Mary Janes would look good, but watch that the overall look isn't too girly.

This in spades.. one day we’ll be dead in the ground so wear whatever makes us happy.

Itsbritneyb1tch · 12/11/2025 18:18

I wear stuff like this on the daily! Roll neck jumper, tights and boots. Lovely!

I have this and I love it. I’m 59! In my defence I’m 5’2 so it’s longer on me than on the model It’s still an inch or so above my knees though 🤷‍♀️
