Too old for pinafore dress?

I really like this dress from Nobody’s child but just not sure if I’m too old for this. I’m 45, around 7 stones and 5 2”. I normally wear jeans and knits so this look is very different to my usual style.

I know we can wear what we want but I’m unsure!

This is a terrible photo of me, funny angle and bag interfering with the fall of the dress but you can see the length

Go for it. I'm 52 and have about 8 pinafore dresses (I also wear dungarees coz I love them too!).
One of my favourite winter outfits TBH. Fitted jumper, pinafore dress, thermal tights and chunky 'bovver' boots.
I also don't care how short they are either. If I'm worried about flashing my pasty then I pop on my cycling shorts underneath.😁

sleeppleasesoon · 12/11/2025 18:31

I love it.

I like the deep v neck. It makes it look interesting and not too prim as you’d likely wear something underneath it.

I say get it.

I always think anyone over 18 looks odd in them. They remind me too much of outfits children wore in the 80s and I can’t get on board. Pinafores and dungarees infantilise grown women. However that is purely my own opinion and I would never voice IRL. If you like it wear it.

Agree. I'm 37, but haven't worn anything you mentioned since I was maybe 6 or so. Pinafores, mary janes with white socks, frilly socks or any socks, and the dreaded horrible dungarees. Looks school-childish to me. Primary school.

However, OP's dress is not pinafore-y, doesn't have the traditional straps, is fitted and doesn't have those awful cutesy front pockets. So I'd wear that.

Thanks everyone! It’s been very reassuring reading the messages. The dress has been ordered!

Thank you! You look great. It’s not short at all

Im 44, 5ft, 7 stone and wearing a black cord pinafore style dress (from M&S) right now. I don’t understand the concept of being “too old” to wear it. I’ll wear whatever I like!

I think I have probably got the same dress. I love it - they're perfect for work for me and I'm a lot older than the OP.

The queen wears them. Midi length. I've always liked a pinafore dress style.

Which Queen?

I don't wear what I like if what I like doesn't like me.
The trench coat that I got despite being told I was not tall enough to suit one did nothing for me.

@Widebumtown , maybe I look odd anyway.

Edited

One persons odd is another persons joy. People should wear whatever they like.

So true and personal style is different to fashion. Everybody likes different things.
For example if you picked up an item and said 'wow, that is straight out of the 1970s!' alot of people would think it hideous whereas I'd already have my purse out!😆

ProfessionalPirate · 12/11/2025 21:55

Def not too old! Although I have to say, I’m 40 and the same weight and height as you - I keep buying the nobodies child pinafores because I think they look great in the photos, but I always send them back because they never look right on me ☹️ I think I need dresses to be waisted otherwise I just end up looking square.

Bonietheretriever · 12/11/2025 21:57

57 and I have 2 of their pinafores that I wear to work. They are lovely soft velvety cord.

CleverButScatty · 12/11/2025 22:32

I love that.
I was considering buying something similar but I am a lot bigger, size 16. I would need something a little longer and wonder if I would just look dumpy.

YourWinter · 12/11/2025 22:37

I’m 69 and I love a denim or cord pinafore dress, with boots in winter or Converse in bare-leg temperatures.

Denim4ever · 12/11/2025 23:03

How is that a dress? It has legs

and you are only 45

MeganM3 · 12/11/2025 23:06

Yes it looks lovely and it sounds like you have just the figure for it.

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 23:14

@Widebumtown Not when what they like looks fine until they try it on and the Marlene Dietrich look is more like Inspector Clouseau's fat nan.

henlake7 · 12/11/2025 23:16

BigFatBully · 12/11/2025 23:01

It's a big short to be honest. That look is more what early-mid 30s would wear. https://www.lkbennett.com/product/DRAUDREYPETITEPOLYESTERMIXBlueNavy~Audrey-Petite-Spring-Navy-V-Neck-Shift-Dress-Navy Would you consider this?

£186 for a polyester dress that probably only looks good on 3% of women?
Hard pass from me!

UpMyself · 12/11/2025 23:32

@BigFatBully , It doesn't even look good on the model. It looks dull, synthetic and corporate minus sleeves.

707girl · 13/11/2025 01:40

I love a pinafore dress! With black opaques and a high boot in the winter (chefs kiss)! Any a crisp white blouse underneath or a knit top - roll neck or not. I love it. I'm your age and wear them a lot - they do make me feel a bit younger but they also have a flattering, clean look about them. Go for it I reckon.
