Too old for pinafore dress?

I really like this dress from Nobody’s child but just not sure if I’m too old for this. I’m 45, around 7 stones and 5 2”. I normally wear jeans and knits so this look is very different to my usual style.

I know we can wear what we want but I’m unsure!

in the states these dresses are called jumpers
so you might find them at other online stores
i love them whearing them since i was 7 love being able to wear different
sweaters,tees,etc

Schoolstressed · 13/11/2025 22:59

I wore one today for the first time in years. I got it in the Oliver Bonas Christmas sale. I wore a black bodysuit under it. It worked well with it.

UpMyself · 13/11/2025 23:11

I like them for many reasons, but one is that I can wear a 'breton' underneath without looking very broad.
Another reason is that some of them (denim) can be worn most of the year. Boots, woolly tights and rollneck in winter, t-shirt and daps in the summer.

I still wear crop tops mid 40s, I don’t give a fuck 😂

Good for you !

Life is too short :)

Others need to focus on their own life/issues and casting views on others says more about them !

Rock on :)

Glitterybee · 15/11/2025 00:08

Omg I love this 😍

I would definitely wear it OP!

AWellReadWoman · 15/11/2025 09:01

I really want the black one with little flowers embroidered all over but at 5'6 think it will be too short for me. Think it would be great for work with a polo neck, thick black tights and my DM loafers

mamagogo1 · 15/11/2025 09:03

I wouldn’t because it’s too short for me but I do wear longer pinafores

RuncibleSpoons · 15/11/2025 17:14

I have the round neck version on order. I’m a bit worried it’s going to be too short as I’m 5’8.5, but it didn’t occur to me I might be too old - and I’m an ancient 53!

TheLemonOtter · 12/11/2025 16:04

I'm 54 and a size 12 and I often wear a dress like that over a roll neck - I'd probably call it a shift dress which sounds more grown up! Nobody's child have a similar one, with embroidery, which i fancy but do not need! So I say go for it.

A shift dress has sleeves.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/11/2025 17:27

At 48, I do wear pinafores, but not as short as the one you posted.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/11/2025 17:29

"Nobody's Child do run a bit small generally"

I find they run large.

RandomUsernameHere · 15/11/2025 17:29

The dress is nice, from the thread title I was expecting it to look like a primary school uniform Grin

A shift dress has sleeves.

Not necessarily.

UpMyself · 15/11/2025 17:58

Not necessarily.

Yes, you're right, but there's still a difference between a sleeveless shift dress and a pinafore dress.

UpMyself · 15/11/2025 18:19

Didn't say there wasn't.

You’re definitely not too old for this! I think it’s lovely and am considering buying myself. I agree with others that age doesn’t matter anyway … it’s about wearing things you love with confidence. That said, I think this is pretty conservative anyway if worn with a top as in the picture and thick tights.

Coloursofwaves · 15/11/2025 20:35

I got the dress! I love it. I got the 8 Regular and it’s the perfect length, couple of inches above the knee.
I have a white roll neck I can wear with it.

Thank you for all your messages

I'm 58 and wear a pinafore dress.

@UpMyself thanks for the tights tip

What do you ladies do for footwear? - knee high boots in the winter?

I’m a similar height and weight as you and I can never find good knee high boots that are slim enough in the legs. I’ve gone for stretchy fabric boots in the past but they tend to sag and wrinkle. If you find decent boots please share!!
The pinafore is gorgeous and you should buy it!

UpMyself · 20/11/2025 10:16

Another boot tip: If boots are slightly loose on the foot with tights but fine with socks, wear thin ankle socks or trainer liners over your tights.

@CardinalCat I’ve bought it and I really like it!

The best narrow fitting knee high boots I have are from Gabor, link below. I bought mine years ago, very comfy and great quality. I also have another pair from John Lewis but I can’t find a link

@CleverButScatty I’m a 16-18 and I wear these sort of dresses, I think they’re quite flattering because they skim over my lumpy bits! I prefer the sort that go in at the waist a bit so they’re not too shapeless. The nicest ones I’ve found are from White Stuff, not somewhere i shop a lot but they’re good quality and suit me (I think).

You convinced me. I got one from nobody's child on vinted with a slight v neck and will be wearing it out tonight!

MooBaggage · 20/11/2025 15:54

I love a pinafore dress and I'm 56 and a size 18 😀 I've got a rust coloured one that is pretty short on me as I'm 5'8", but I wear it with thick black tights and boots and I don't care 😬

mcmuffin22 · 20/11/2025 17:10

I wear them and I like that one as it looks nicely vintage in style. I like a short dress anyway. I am 46 😁

Idontjetwashthefucker · 20/11/2025 17:59

I wore a khaki cord one today, just above the knee, with a thin black polo underneath and chunky ankle boots.

I'm 52 and I rocked it Grin
