What are you wearing?

Glad I made you smile @FleurDeFleur Smile

I had to think about a 'high pony' . In my world that's something 14 hh with four legs.

Still intrigued about this high end establishment with unmemorable food and jeans clad clientele, but don't want to derail the thread any more!

walkingmad · 09/11/2025 15:33

I'm surprised a PP thinks mentioning the brand doesn't add to the description. It definitely paints a better picture for me, since I can visualise the style of that brand.

I think it depends on the brand, a Westwood dress is very distinctive so easy to imagine. The dress i mentioned I would wear is old Topshop but it's fairly generic so could be from lots of places.

Careful now. You’ll make Nigel die again.

@Words Snorfle, you're so funny and sweet. Dean Street Townhouse is routinely described as 'luxury' and 'upmarket' but it is really a fancy boutique hotel with a bar and restaurant attached, rather than a restaurant. It's owned by the Soho House group, so its media-based membership probably helps account for its - in my view - rather puffed up reputation for fine dining and excellent wine list. In common with all the Soho House establishments, the best bit is generally the building and the decor. You probably wouldn't go for the food, which was nice enough, but nothing special. I guess the members enjoy the networking opportunities.

Jeans are commonplace everywhere nowadays. The last time I went to the Royal Opera House, some people were dressed as if for a trip to the garden centre. Poor things. No sense of occasion.

anon2022anon · 09/11/2025 17:12

I recently got this Rixo dress from Vinted, I've worn it once to the theatre and I would like to wear it again, so I'll choose this ☺️
I wore it with suede black pointed flats, and a red ankle length wool coat, wavy hair and a red lip, and it felt good (and warm)

Rest assured that I notice what women and men wear at all times.

Probably velvet flares, 1970s silver top, matchy matchy silver brogues, posh coat.

I now want a pair of metallic bronze or silver brogues.

Even though I never go out 🤦‍♀️

NigelForage · 09/11/2025 19:55

Thingy townhouse isn't fancy

It's beautiful on too, I felt very glamorous for £40 😂

I LOVE the way people need to mention the brand as if that adds anything to the description

It really does!

Lots of brands have really particular styles, so a short form one would be really different to a shirt from another.

Taking a couple of high Street brands for example - I'd expect anthropologie to be over sized, androgenous in style where as boden would be more fitted and feminine.

MoreRabbit · 09/11/2025 21:39

Oooh there's some excellent S&B bingo here 🙂

  • Wear anything, no-one dresses up for dinner in restaurants ever anywhere anymore CHECK
  • [Specific place OP has been] isn't fancy CHECK
  • God what's wrong with you no-one notices clothes CHECK

For the record, like @Floisme I clock absolutely everything everyone is wearing and am fascinated by it, as I am a) interested in style and b) nosy.

God knows what I'd wear for a nice/posh dinner now though - I do have some wide-leg velvet trousers that don't get enough wear but I only really have trainers to go with them. Actually I have a beloved black silk shirt - maybe that with an undetermined skirt! I need a bit of a wardrobe refresh...

100% agree. When a pp mentioned finding a Clements Ribero fine knit in a charity shop, I could picture what she meant. I guess maybe it's not useful for everyone though.

My current go too is a red wine coloured shirred bodice midi dress from M&S, which is currently in the sale - www.marksandspencer.com/crew-neck-ruffle-midi-dress/p/clp60741347?color=CLARET&extid=ps_ps-pla-pmax_ggl_ww_ch__-UK-_-_bau&cq_src=google_ads&cq_cmp=20011577753&cq_con=&cq_term=&cq_med=pla&cq_plac=&cq_net=x&cq_plt=gp&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20014443268&gbraid=0AAAAAD7g6bRiumNmAIKJVC-A5KQXJxFdU&gclid=CjwKCAiAlMHIBhAcEiwAZhZBUuNcXCiW3o33UeWr5ia21fi67wE-Rkjh_dIAExvxkwjjasJBysgjzxoCo7cQAvD_BwE with black tights, leopard print flats (last year’s urban outfitters) and some big gold hoop earrings, and a messy bun.

For Christmas parties I plan on wearing an old sequin midi skirt that I think is originally from Zara - it’s sort of a dark silver/pewter grey, with a plain black t shirt, a black loose tuxedo blazer (mine is about 20 years old from Comptoir des cottoniers but there are similar ones all over the high street) and some chunky black boots that I think are
from Russell and Bromley via Vinted.

henlake7 · 09/11/2025 23:34

I'd probably wear one of my vast collection of Joanie dresses....and hope nobody looked at my feet coz I don't really have any posh shoes!

I was trying to think for a few moments there, what an 'undetermined skirt' was. I thought it must be a style that I hadn't yet come across, or just an imaginative description of something quite unstructured. I twigged in the end though!

Love this 😂

Maybe a sarong that I won't tie until the minute before I walk out the door?...what style could it be...ooh the excitement!!

Milbie · 10/11/2025 14:45

I usually wear tailored wool trousers and a plain silk shirt with brogues. Always suitable - have worn this to the Ritz, Daniel, etc - which sometimes can be a challenge if you're a woman who doesn't like wearing dresses.

😂Oh god, I started off giggling at some of the comments, and now I'm properly laughing out loud to myself.

Or maybe some extremely wide-legged trousers, that look like they're trying to pass as a maxi skirt?

MinnieMountain · 10/11/2025 15:36

I’m going to the George hotel in Stamford with DH as my birthday treat this month.

I’ll be wearing a D&G dress like this but it’s older so no internal bustier bit https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/397036820701?_skw=dolce+gabbana+dress+satin&itmmeta=01K9Q5XT0DYBZ7XYH9D429H9FQ&hash=item5c713d18dd%3Ag%3AaJsAAeSwqjNovuJD&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1f6UC1YDuJNGFHUXG1iTJw8ktVEwx6K6BDotjvGICBWYZRdTd471TOOsg%2FpSffiVycGQmV9ozQiho8RToedgW8ZwZkn2pQUY74al70Sas7jfTsVLj7GgeTuT1vJmWQ8gf3shZ8NdYYR1E%2BPIeHYGb7G4hYABB61QouZrc2Rx9gPYloVpj96CBDEmTeO7dxc9A2V%2FOKoHFCDkbJ5SgkrEBjoOviy2qwVc%2FXs5gLTzdB2veso0y1N1rjxZzNsqEgnIrt5BO4FafAXhIx%2BTjdlOtiEBU%2F637rSJAmVcdoDx0IG1g%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8ig9-XNZg&keyword=dolce+gabbana+dress+satin&sacat=0&relatedSearch=true

Plus dangly pearl and sapphire earrings and leopard print ballet flats.

I’ll also wear a 1930’s kimono style silk house coat if it’s not raining.

Well I have looked at the menu and decided on the twice cooked smoked haddock soufflé ( yum) and the sole.

Agree the meat choices look a little disappointing. Possibly the lamb rump and sweetbreads, but the sole for preference.

As jeans seem to be perfectly acceptable in these places I will wear a stretchy pair of those ( would a few artful slashes to the fabric here and there enhance or detract from the look? Or is that passé now ?) a black cashmere jumper (if I can find one in the wardrobe without moth holes), my mother's pearls, and a super on trend boot from Hotter, made extra comfy with neoprene insoles as my dinosaur sized meat plates are so huge no kitten heel would suffice.

Verite1 · 10/11/2025 16:36

Oooh - Ive got this dress. Also without the internal bustier. I can't remember how old it is - must be close to 20 years old (and I haven't worn it for more than 10)! Can't believe how much it is selling for on eBay!

I’ve been to Hide (and other Michelin restaurants) in sandals and cargo shorts. No one gives a flying pig. If you’ve the money, they’ll seat you and give you an awesome experience. Only places like the Ritz get away with dress codes because of heritage.

Anywhere that isn’t Michelin and forcing a smart dress code can do one, even some Michelin places too IMO. But I do wear jeans, white sneakers and a jumper most of the time. Smart enough.

Where's the fun in that!!!

TheChosenTwo · 10/11/2025 16:58

I’d wear a dress I bought recently, a dark red tartan sleeveless drop hem waist pleated dress with a shirt with a big pointy collar underneath. Black tights and black boots. I’d call it smart casual!
