Then maybe the style board isn’t for you?

My invitation tonight is to Dean Street Townhouse, and the menu is the least interesting thing about it. But I’m expecting a fun evening anyway, big group of people, most of whom I’ve not seen in ages.

Black trousers just remind me of work, unless with very high heels and I cba with those anymore.

Jeans are for work (as are black trousers) . Both can look smart. Trainers only - got rid of all my heels.

I’ve been to Hide (and other Michelin restaurants) in sandals and cargo shorts. No one gives a flying pig. If you’ve the money, they’ll seat you and give you an awesome experience. Only places like the Ritz get away with dress codes because of heritage.

Anywhere that isn’t Michelin and forcing a smart dress code can do one, even some Michelin places too IMO. But I do wear jeans, white sneakers and a jumper most of the time. Smart enough.

Yes, yes, yes, we all know it's possible to eat at high-end places and not gaf how you look, blah blah blah.

But sometimes it's fun to dress up a bit, no matter how familiar one is with the Guide Michelin.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/11/2025 16:46

@LondonPapa I do. Presumably, you carry subtle markers to indicate your wealth. The 2ct diamond, the expensive wristwatch, the driver who drops you.

Londonmummy66 · 08/11/2025 16:47

Black Jasper Conran shirtwaister with the collar popped and sleeves rolled to 3/4, a white scoop neck L sleeved t underneath, black knee boots and chunky pearls.

You mind what other people wear when they go out for dinner 🤣. Can’t say I notice.

ohyesido · 08/11/2025 16:57

Flared jeans high heels and a slim fit shirt

ohyesido · 08/11/2025 16:59

My DH on the other hand would wear shorts a polo top the most godawful loafers and still look far better than me

I notice because I like both clothes and people watching, and when people go to a lot of effort, it's nice to notice. I wouldn't be bothered by anything, though, unless it was a MAGA sweatshirt or something similar - a Trump watch, for example, would put me right off my food.

I’d wear a dress or skirt. The idea of wide legged trousers as evening wear depresses me a bit.

I’d either wear a silky Whistles mini dress or a silky All Saints midi dress with suede over the knee boots, I think.

Not as depressing as jeans...

Exactly! However, I just think some people aren't very interested in clothes. I love clothes and opportunities for dressing up!

I'd struggle to be depressed by an item of clothing (other than the MAGA gear mentioned above). I see people everywhere looking amazing in jeans

It was a joke

FleurDeFleur · 08/11/2025 17:05

I like to see people being creative with clothes, perhaps an unexpected colour or style combination.

MaturingCheeseball · 08/11/2025 17:11

Oh no, here we go again with the “it’s naff to try” crew. There was one only about a month ago with a Big Sneer at the hapless poster who just might have dared to want to dress up for something.

Also if I were 22, reed thin and 6’ tall I might be able to pull off “oh this old t-shirt I found on the floor and my dad’s painting jeans” but at my time of life making that little effort would cause the staff to kindly offer me a bag of food at the door to help me on my way.

Also seen are the terribly nice posters fishing for what restaurant it is so they can helpfully tell poster that that place is so last year and it’s full of tourists/naff out of towners.

I notice extremes. But no, I don't mind really, it was just a response to a joy sucking comment.

TheLemonOtter · 08/11/2025 17:20

I think that making a bit of effort - whatever effort looks like for you- can be a way of showing appreciation for the company you are wirh as well. And obviously for lots of us it is fun! I'd probably go for a satin slip skirt (elasticated waist!), and a slightly drapey knit with 3/4 sleeves - either silver grey skirt with black top, or blue skirt with navy top!

But I don't know what to wear to a 90s dance night at a fancy hotel next weekend!

BigSkies2022 · 08/11/2025 17:35

Changed my mind- chocolate brown fine wool trousers, not a skirt. Jewelled loafers, still R&B, but clumpier ones. Tonight I want a bit more height. All else the same, likely add a big cashmere scarf In burgundy.

this thread has become rather sneery. Shame.

Where are your loafers from? I got a great pair with studs on, but I do like bejewelled shoes 😊

Ahfiddlesticks · 08/11/2025 17:46

Very much depends on the atmosphere of the restaurant. The last one I went to I was in jeans and a blouse but I've worn a velvet dress and heels before. Comfort and elegance for me rather than being dressy.

I often think these days there's such an eclectic mix of dress styles that you can't really for wrong unless you wore your primary leggings and a dirty t shirt!

Tbf I dress casually most of the time even for dinner, I do care how I look though.
