So I have a new boyfriend, and I meeting his colleagues at a christmas do on 12th December - so I have time. I want to look good of course, not show him up!

Im 51, BMI 23, curvy - I have massive boobs (34gg), slim waist with flat tum, but
very chunky arms and legs that I like covered. He loves me in dresses, so I think id like to wear a dress. A big issue is shoes, I never know what to wear. Flats with a midi dress make my calves look enormous - so i cheat and wear knee high boots. But not all dresses look good with them do they? Id wear a pair of black shiny knee high boots with a slight heel if I had to make the look work. Id rather that than a pair of high heels.

Anyway, any ideas? Im thinking something slinky, shiny, velvety???

I like this a lot but what footwear? Open to all suggestions. Christina Hendricks X Joanie - Neroli Puff Sleeve Velvet Dress | Vintage-Inspired Scarlett Midi Dress | Joanie

mumofoneandone thanks for the Yumi link. Found this on there. I love it! Yumi Green Velvet Wrap Midi Dress With Contrast Hemline | Yumi. Love the sleeves - very vampires wife.

beansontoast85 thanks but that wouldn't suit me at all. The baggy top would make me look 3 sizes bigger than I am.

LOVE this one. It’s definitely got Vampire’s Wife vibes. This is the winner so far imo - it’s way nicer than the original red one. I do think it would look better with heeled ankle boots, rather than knee high though.

amibeingaknob · 02/11/2025 10:13

Im ordering it. Its the Vampires wife vibe that got me. Id LOVE one of their actual dresses but the boobs is huge issue - and the eyewatering price of course. But this could be next best thing. Wish I knew if this was an actual wrap or a mock wrap iykwim? if its the latter it won't work. I can but try. I agree with you RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie - and about the ankle boots. But they just look shit on me. Id do long shiny pointy knee highs or a kitten heel with this?

My daughter (very slim, tall, tiny boobs) has a VW dress which she wore to get married in. Little, round, busty me is not jealous at all. *

*This is a lie. I’m horribly jealous.

Just looking at it, I think the top is a mock wrap but not sewn down (hope that makes sense), so there should be some flexibility on fit. Could easily pop a little lacy camisole under it if you needed!

amibeingaknob · 02/11/2025 11:13

mumofoneandone yeah Im in a wrap dress with top on underneath right now. I think that works in the day, but fancy evening dress I think it ruins the look. I think you may be right though. Mock wraps are so annoying.

Yeh if I ever got married again Id want to wear one. But they really arent right for an hour glass are they? More tall and willowy. But my god they are gorgeous. Did she get the silvery one? Thats the one I would wear as a wedding dress for sure.

The green shiny one. It’s a thing of beauty.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie out of interest - does she wear it all the time? got lots of use out of it? I think if i did stump up that sort of cash Id want to wear it a lot- and also they are so gorgeous. Just curious.

Go for a wrap dress you can go wrong and get some ruby shoo you will look fantastic

amibeingaknob · 02/11/2025 17:44

Another thing I get flummoxed on - shoes and tights. If a coloured dress is a goer Id love to get coloured shoes to match - or mismatch (eg green dress, red shoes). But then I wonder what colour tights you are supposed to wear? I bought some funky tights - i have black lacy, polka dot, and fishnets, which I think look awesome. I have so many coloured tights too. I wear these all the time with doc martens or flat knee highs in daytime - I think it looks funky. But nighttime? With a fancy dress and heels, I just get confused.

ive been looking at kitten heels today in leopard print, and platform sandals in velvet.

If the red velvet cristina dress works, would a red velvet platform sandals with lacy black tights look nice or weird?
Thoughts?

i think if you wear the green Christina dress your black boots would look fine. Remember no one will see your legs sat down at dinner anyway!

No. She’s only worn it one more time so far. I think she’s bonkers. If it was mine and it looked as good as it does on her, I’d be finding excuses to wear it all the time!

ElsieJay · 02/11/2025 18:36

@amibeingaknob - leopard print or red velvet shoes both sound lovely , but IMHO neither would go with black lacy tights.

Edited to add : assuming you’re wearing the red velvet Christina Hendricks dress , which is gorgeous .

Love love love this - V-Neck Midi Slip Dress | Nobody's Child | M&S but its highly unlikely to fit because theres no tie back or shirring, and its a zip. So a 10 would likely be too tight on boobs, a 12 would be loose on waist and then ruin look.

But if I could find something like this, with a tie back or stretch back, Id be thrilled!

I have skim read the thread and sorry if I have missed anything, but this dress is bias cut so should be ok fit wise?

Look for the New Look dress without the lace. That would be a gorgeous shape for you figure but I agree, the lace cheapens it

If you have time and know somewhere that does cheap alterations, you could get them to cut a thin strip of fabric off the bottom of the skirt and use it to fill in the gaps behind the lace. I agree it looks perfect apart from the see-though strips, but the lace would be a nice detail with fabric behind it.

Have a look at Katya Wildman: her dresses are ideal for your shape.
