So I have a new boyfriend, and I meeting his colleagues at a christmas do on 12th December - so I have time. I want to look good of course, not show him up!

Im 51, BMI 23, curvy - I have massive boobs (34gg), slim waist with flat tum, but
very chunky arms and legs that I like covered. He loves me in dresses, so I think id like to wear a dress. A big issue is shoes, I never know what to wear. Flats with a midi dress make my calves look enormous - so i cheat and wear knee high boots. But not all dresses look good with them do they? Id wear a pair of black shiny knee high boots with a slight heel if I had to make the look work. Id rather that than a pair of high heels.

Anyway, any ideas? Im thinking something slinky, shiny, velvety???

I like this a lot but what footwear? Open to all suggestions. Christina Hendricks X Joanie - Neroli Puff Sleeve Velvet Dress | Vintage-Inspired Scarlett Midi Dress | Joanie

I actually LOL'd at 'santa vibe'. Never even occured to me and now I can't unsee it. They did put the model in black boots and a biker jacket - both of which I have, and I thought it looked good til you said that. Funny as.

Unfortunately I know this from experience, after I wore a beautiful red skirt suit with knee high boots to a winter wedding. My husband kept creeping up behind me and saying "Ho Ho Ho" very quietly in my ear.

NEVER AGAIN

I really like this too with the burgundy boots. But is knitted party enough?? Or is this too casual? Burgundy Button Detail Knitted Midaxi Dress

I love this. I’d buy it if they had it in my size.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/10/2025 07:25

The knitted burgundy one isn't saying party to me tbh.

I would absolutely LOVE to wear a jumpsuit. So easy then. But being tall, and big norks, I have never found one that works. I have tried on eleventy million of them too because I want one soooo bad. I always think they look so chic - and you can wear them with flat shoes!!

I’m your height but size 14 with big boobs and I find phase eight jumpsuits are perfect in length and suitability for curvy women. Obv you’d need a smaller size but worth a try. Always loads on vinted too!

Its not a party as such - its a fancy christmas dinner for work colleagues. Just told to dress up.

That’s lovely. I’m tempted to get that myself, especially with the 20% off. I think knitted is fine especially if you add other materials through accessories and shoes, e.g. largish gold or brass earrings and perhaps polished leather boots or shoes. I’m the same height and dress size as you; smaller boobs but still on the large size. I can immediately tell that this dress would fit well as it would hug on the waist and stretch on the chest, and it doesn’t have a defined section for the boobs, which is always a nightmare as the section is always too small.

Yeh you get it. Any seam at all and Im like 'shit'. The burgundy with the lace is unlikely to fit hey cos I reckon Ill have half a boob in the lace lolz. I think you are so right. I think the burgundy knitted it is. I know the 10 will fit great cos theres no edge to the boob bit.

Oh and Im tall - 5'10. I really don't know what to wear! Ugh.

I like this I think. But is it a bit cheap and tarty - or is it stylish and funky?? Black Faux Leather Popper Midi Pencil Dress. Would cover the tops of my arms and my chunky thighs and I could wear with knee high boots? Or is it a bit dominatrix. 😂

That leather look dress is dreadful. The red dress is very nice and suitable.

lessglittermoremud · 31/10/2025 07:59

Next do tall people (over 5ft 10) jumpsuits, they have some lovely ones so worth looking on there if you haven’t tried on one of theirs specifically, long tall Sally also have some.
I’m at the other end of the scale and have to shop petite ranges because of my height alas not because of skinniness 😂
I’m always envious of lovely Amazonian women, I’m sure you’ll find something and look amazing!

Attictroll · 31/10/2025 08:02

The knitted dress and leather look are awful imho. Love the first red dress but agree shoes are the tricky thing esp when tall and find walking in heels tricky. I find the next forever comfor ones a lot easier and think you need contrast and something hopefully you would wear again….these could be good but metallic or a bright colour could be better https://www.next.co.uk/style/su618127/f25490 I wish these came in a popping green for you https://www.next.co.uk/style/su670618/f77635 and I’ve also just fallen in love with these https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/footwear/shoes/brown-leopard-print-block-heel-mary-jane-shoes/p/923512816 the green would go with red dress maybe https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/footwear/shoes/dark-green-faux-leather-slingback-pointed-toe-pumps/p/932431738

Okay.

Must admit I don't like the dress though. It looks like something somebody in one of those terrible cheesy Christmas films would wear to go ice skating in and then sing about how much they believe in Father Christmas.

OMG! That sounds so so random but I totally get it - also arriving at a huge american home alone type house, with a camel coat on, and pressies under their arm looking flustered.

So i showed boyfriend all of them, and he likes the Cristina ones the most. I did tell him not to look at the models but at the dress, but he still says firmly thats the one. I do have a very similar figure, and they tell you what size she is in them all, so hopefully they work. I ordered the red and the green. if they are winners I will wear them to death every xmas to get my moneys worth. No bloody clue what shoes/boots I will wear if they are goers. I will report back when they have arrived.

tragichero · 31/10/2025 08:57

I have to say (and apologies to those who have it and love it) to me the first dress looks dull and a bit frumpy - not what I would wear to impress a new guy.

The faux PVC one, definitely some men would find that sexy! But may be a bit much for a work do, I dunno.

The New Look dress is nicer, but I think may only look good on the model due to her miniscule and very high waist.

What are the main elements of your figure you want to maximise, OP? You say your fella loves you in a dress, does he love your legs, your boobs - what?

(Not implying it is essential to dress for the male gaze. But one has the right to do so if one wishes!).

tragichero · 31/10/2025 08:58

Oh I am too late to the party, sorry. Hope you love it!

Definitely wear boots.

Not too late at all - because as my fellow hour glasses will know - only about 10 per cent of ordered stuff ever works. Although one would hope stuff Cristina is flogging will actually suit. I just went for the 12 in them, because it said she did and I think we have a similar shape. But we will see!

As for what I like/boyfriend likes. He loves my shape - loves anything figure hugging on me, hates me in baggy stuff. I have a satin suit, and tops and trousers that are party wear, but he just loves me in a dress. Hed never dictate I pushed him to tell me, and I want to look cracking for him of course.

I like to emphasise my waist and flat tum (waist is 27), and my boobs but not too much cleavage cos im old. Like to hide my ample thighs and tops of arms. Things that flare out under the boobs and not really fitted at the waist just make me look so much bigger than I am. And cos Im tall I need the waist to sit at the waist not under my boobs as can happen sometimes if its not an actual 'tall' person dress. So the burgundy with gold buttons - that could very well have the button bit under my boobs not on the waist as it should sit.

Drives me bonkers. Sometimes I crave just being straight up and down with no tits. Shopping must be soooo much easier.

Fortunately I found that last minute so I got the two dresses for 180. Which is still heaps but Im much much happier about.

Do people think they would work with black heeled boots like these or too 'ho ho ho' like another poster said. I don't like heels or my calves, so I really don't want to wear shoes.

Sounds like a good choice . I think the majority of the dresses posted in this thread (aside from the pleather one, sorry) have been nice dresses which would have been totally appropriate but your original dress does have a little something extra. I was going to suggest a bit of an order and try on as a lot of the other dresses were modelled by women with a very small bust. Also, whilst I liked the knitted ones they may possibly be a bit warm in a heated restaurant.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 31/10/2025 12:12

I like the burgundy knitted one as well, especially with other textures as others have suggested.

Definitely not the New Look fake boots, they will cheapen it. I’d go for real, polished leather or suede. Either knee length or ankle.

Also, and I’ll probably get lynched on here for this, but I would not be running your ideas past your fella, I suggest retaining some mystery! Let him see the outfit when you’ve got it on and not before. One of the reasons for this, is I just don’t think men ‘get it’ when it comes to style necessarily, and asking him to look at an obviously Christmas red dress being modelled by Christine Hendrix, is potentially going to blind him to other ideas. It will also give him a sense of having some sort of choice in the matter!
