So I have a new boyfriend, and I meeting his colleagues at a christmas do on 12th December - so I have time. I want to look good of course, not show him up!

Im 51, BMI 23, curvy - I have massive boobs (34gg), slim waist with flat tum, but
very chunky arms and legs that I like covered. He loves me in dresses, so I think id like to wear a dress. A big issue is shoes, I never know what to wear. Flats with a midi dress make my calves look enormous - so i cheat and wear knee high boots. But not all dresses look good with them do they? Id wear a pair of black shiny knee high boots with a slight heel if I had to make the look work. Id rather that than a pair of high heels.

Anyway, any ideas? Im thinking something slinky, shiny, velvety???

I like this a lot but what footwear? Open to all suggestions. Christina Hendricks X Joanie - Neroli Puff Sleeve Velvet Dress | Vintage-Inspired Scarlett Midi Dress | Joanie

Really? I got it in denim and wear it with cowboy boots. I thought I looked pretty good in it. Shit.

I think it would probably be great in denim but I think fake leather would look a bit cheap and probably feel a bit sweaty. I like all the other dresses suggested, including the black sparkly one in the smaller size.

Offredismysister · 30/10/2025 17:07

The plum velvet is nicest, but I’m not sure what size you’d need to fit your bust.

amibeingaknob · 30/10/2025 17:11

I think id have to go for 10 to fit my waist with that one as there is no tie at the back to pull it in. It looks stretchy as there is no zip. So it might just work in a 10. But is the lace bit a bit trashy and cheap looking?? Burgundy is all the rage now isn't it, and with the matching boots I think it looks nice. And solves the shoe issue. I can just about manage a heel if its chunky and its on a boot.

Love love love this - V-Neck Midi Slip Dress | Nobody's Child | M&S but its highly unlikely to fit because theres no tie back or shirring, and its a zip. So a 10 would likely be too tight on boobs, a 12 would be loose on waist and then ruin look.

But if I could find something like this, with a tie back or stretch back, Id be thrilled!

It’s not satin but similar style with waist belt thingy at the back www.next.co.uk/style/su722631/y21084

Thank you.

Would this work? I know its knitted so not very party-party but I thought it means its stretchy so will hopefully fit well, and (without a belt) is kinda the right shape and a great colour as a christmas party dress?? With black pointy shiny boots.

Those reds are both nice! Might be worth trying the 12?

Nillinoo · 30/10/2025 18:48

The first red dress is gorgeous. You really couldn't wear it with black knee length boots, though, because that's way too much of a Santa vibe (especially at Xmas).

Would you consider a metallic shoe with it? Maybe from Esska (expensive but apparently very comfortable).

I don't like the leathery black dress - looks cheap - although I can see how it would look good in denim.

Oh and Im tall - 5'10. I really don't know what to wear! Ugh.

I like this I think. But is it a bit cheap and tarty - or is it stylish and funky?? Black Faux Leather Popper Midi Pencil Dress. Would cover the tops of my arms and my chunky thighs and I could wear with knee high boots? Or is it a bit dominatrix. 😂

First dress is lovely. This one is awful though. Can only be deemed tarty if it is also sexy, it definitely isn't. The worst thing about it isn't that it looks like a fire hazard.

I'm sure you will gorgeous in the red.

Lovetoplan2 · 30/10/2025 18:55

Burgundy velvet dress is very good - I don't like either of the other two. I would avoid boots and go for black semi opaque tights and black suede heels.

I actually LOL'd at 'santa vibe'. Never even occured to me and now I can't unsee it. They did put the model in black boots and a biker jacket - both of which I have, and I thought it looked good til you said that. Funny as.

Second burgundy knitted dress also great and can be dressed up with earrings, cocktail ring and bracelet. Not too casual!

I would agree about the faux leather dress but I think it’s the material - denim is a very different prospect and I can imagine that looks nice.

Thisismetooaswell · 30/10/2025 20:23

Look for the New Look dress without the lace. That would be a gorgeous shape for you figure but I agree, the lace cheapens it

UnintentionalArcher · 30/10/2025 20:23

amibeingaknob · 30/10/2025 19:02

I really like this too with the burgundy boots. But is knitted party enough?? Or is this too casual? Burgundy Button Detail Knitted Midaxi Dress

That’s lovely. I’m tempted to get that myself, especially with the 20% off. I think knitted is fine especially if you add other materials through accessories and shoes, e.g. largish gold or brass earrings and perhaps polished leather boots or shoes. I’m the same height and dress size as you; smaller boobs but still on the large size. I can immediately tell that this dress would fit well as it would hug on the waist and stretch on the chest, and it doesn’t have a defined section for the boobs, which is always a nightmare as the section is always too small.

Gymbunny2025 · 30/10/2025 22:48

Wow love the first dress in both colours- no brainer go for that!
