Skirt/ jumper look. Am I too big for it? Or doing it wrong

Honestly, I like how this looks on other people but I am not sure if I am doing it right.

Pics are bad, we only have 1 proper mirror pushed into the spare room at the min. That's just the dress, jumper tucked and jumper untucked. Then in the wild.

I'm just not sure I pull it off.

@pontipinemum too much bulk with your initial pics. Im a similar shape (with fallen arches) and I wear:

M&S Eva jeans or wide legged jeans, good bra
Car coats : Zara
Decent trainers: Hoka for daily wear, Addidas for going out. Both have good quality arch support insoles from Amazon

Get the right length skirt : midi doesnt work unless you wear cool boots or heels, and even then it's a hard look to pull off. Id wear a thinner v neck jumper but a blazer personally but again may make me look mumsy
I wear these loads for the school run but you can smarten them or dress them down

I remember reading here that leggings were just for the gym. I guffawed as I lived in leggings. However I think they were right, they were just convenient but did nothing for my figure. It took a Ring doorbell footage to tell me that. Flared leggings or trousers are a very simple change but look tons better.

Ophy83 · 03/11/2025 05:56

I love your pin board. The jeans on it are all barrel leg or wide leg, not flares. I think they would suit you. I got some nice ones in m&s and fatface.

Also the skirts on your board have a bit more structure than the ones you've bought e.g. pleats. A satin skirt may well suit you as well.

Jumper-wise, keep an eye on the sales for cashmere. It's not just soft and comfortable, but it isn't so bulky so cashmere knitwear looks much better, particularly when you have big boobs (my figure is similar to yours).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/11/2025 07:04

Re the camel mini skirt - do they do it in a darker colour? Black, navy or maybe burgundy would all be easier to wear than camel, I think.

ThatPinkShark · 03/11/2025 08:21

It would be better to pair it with a long black coat.

Princessfluffy · 03/11/2025 08:43

I’m not loving the tight trousers or leggings looks - I think a barrel leg trouser would really look good, have you tried that shape OP

IfalldownbutIgetupagain · 03/11/2025 09:57

To me the successful pictures on your pinboard are the ones with a v tuck, so the colour change is not straight across the model’s stomach area but a V. Same with your photos, if you cut contrasting colours straight across your waist or stomach it has the effect of shortening your body and also widening it. Your figure isn’t short and wide, so you don’t want it to look like it is. Try with that v neck cream jumper in your last photos, tuck it in in the middle and leave the sides longer, to mimic the v neck, and see if it makes a difference.

FastTurtle · 03/11/2025 14:29

I have a few pairs of these trousers, they could make a change from leggings/skinny jeans. I get a lot of wear out of them in the autumn and winter with various tops and jackets.

If i read your measurements right you are an apple shape. If you search Pinterest - outfits for apple shape - you'll see loads of great outfits, and the page I saw had a link to tips as well. I think you are still looking at tops that are too thick material and too big. You have great legs. So some tops with a wider/more decorative neckline that fit, new bra, as others have said, and show off your legs. Inhave hig boobs, i wear a 36 G bra, and wear boat necks, scoop necks and cowls. Things ghat are slihhyly more structured ard good too, floppy t shirts just cling everywhere so in all of the wrong places as well as the right ones. You've still got a waist, too, even if you have a baby tummy! Which is a badge of honour - the phrase yummy mummy definitely applies. Enjoy. You are worth decent clothes that fit and make you feel good.

Can I just say thank you so so so much to every one of you who have taken the time to comment on this.

I have read it all, and will read it all again!! Because I know I don't 'get' most of it. I think I will go for a style analysis but it will most likely be 2026. Toddlers, college, work, ADHD assessments, Christmas, farming and life!!

I know some ppl were against the flairs. But I think for now they are a step in the right direction. The skinny jeans are in the wash and will then go to the chairty shop.

I wore the flairs, a white v neck t shirt and the blue cari to the nursery this morning. Not even remotely a 'stylish' outfit but I think quite a large leap from the leggings and massive hoodies.

I suffered shocking bad PPD with my 2nd baby and it has been very slow to lift - if any of you reading this have your loved ones saying you have it but you don't see it, believe them. I am taking this as a very good sign 😁

@moneyadviceplease thank you. Do you think mid-rise jeans would work? My 'pouch' is my least favourite part.

I am actually wearing a mens pennys (primark) mens crew neck jumper. It is very comfortable and I think works well for me. I was going to wear the blue cable knit cardigan but didn't in the end.

Basics do sound like a good starting point. I lost about 10lbs pretty quickly when I stopped breast feeding the 1st time so hopefully that happens again!

I'm at college today and going to go to pennys at lunch to return the stuff I bought last week. They had a lot of jeans. I liked these but didn't try them on as they are mid rise - https://www.primark.com/en-ie/p/major-find-mid-rise-flared-jeans-mid-blue-991125619510

I've also been looking at this today as a basic piece but maybe not......https://www.marksandspencer.com/ie/jersey-cosy-midi-column-dress/p/clp60737100?_gl=111bpfev_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgpzIBhCOARIsABZm7vFt4lvqUA7cz7VJUL9AzdVoVoqGNXwC5aqDnPsxqar3Czed3KKhKLAaAou6EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&gbraid=0AAAAAD7g6bRZLoSEf-twIMKJwcAtwthp5

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I haven't ignored it. -insert something horrendously derogatory about my ability and speed to understand, that I know I am no longer allowed to say to myself!!!

I am reading through everything. I'm just not picking it up or getting it. I happened to be in the shopping centre last Thursday and bought those other bits - since everyone has said they don't work etc I have returned what I bought online and will bring back the pennys stuff today (I'm at college so can go at lunch time). Well bar the rust dress because I wore it so I can't return it. I might try sell it on vinted. I live about an hour from anywhere with a range of clothing shops.

I still really like that blue-grey cable cardigan!

Please don't. They look fine, and will tuck into boots/wellies. Wear them with the shirt like in the photo with the wee lad.

I had awful PPD - ended up in hospital - it is a really nasty illness so take care of yourself. Don't bin the skinnies as they are on their way back in - in the meantime you can wear them with knee high boots (already back in) and a longer jumper - think Claudia Winkleman in the Traitors.

Me too! 😊

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 04/11/2025 11:54

I noticed my local fatface has stacks of skinny jeans in this week. You like them, they suit you (same with the flares) so wear them!
A Claudia winkelman long jumper is a good shout.

EcruCardigan · 04/11/2025 12:00

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 04/11/2025 11:52

Me too! 😊

Me too, and the skinnies.
I wear boots, so it's skinnies for me in winter.
Smartish boots and longish coat hide a multitude of sins.

DickDewey · 04/11/2025 12:14

Claudia looks great in skinnies because the whole look is edgy and she has skinny legs. Skinnies look atrocious if legs are on the fleshy side.

I have kept a few pairs because what else do you wear on dog walks with boots? But that’s the only time I wear them and I can’t believe how much I used to wear them a few years back.

I wouldn't be surprised if you aren't more confused now than ever as so many opposing ideas on here ! I would say continue to look at a few instagrams just to get some ideas. I know they have inspired me to do things a little bit differently.

Absolutely! We’ve got posters saying wear this and wear that, then definitely don’t wear that. You’ve got an hourglass and an Apple-shaped figure. You want to feel cosy and live on a farm but a satin skirt is just what you need…
I’d pay for a personal shopper to help you out and ignore us lot on here 😂

EcruCardigan · 04/11/2025 13:01

Claudia is about 5'5 and probably a size 8 or thereabouts. She is dressed in good clothes by a stylist, and a high street garment will probably have been altered to fit well.
I love her look but she isn't a young mum attending college trying to juggle everything.
(She's a mum and probably does a fair bit of juggling but YKWIM)

I watched a couple of the Melissa Murrell videos and rate her. She was showing things like the same outfit with different shoes, or same outfit worn slightly differently, and how that could make or break the look

FastTurtle · 04/11/2025 13:22

I wear a lot of tops like this one, this particular one is probably too summery for now but I find this style works well when I want a slightly nicer top than a sweatshirt or jumper.

This particular one would be good with denim in the spring.

The straight leg jersey trousers are also versatile, they could be worn with trainers, shoes, ankle boots with various tops and jackets etc.

Purchasing a nice mid length dress could be a good idea as it’s classic and you always have something so wear if you go somewhere nice.

A little bit! But I will go through all this again after I do my final exam in a few weeks.

I actually got a compliment off the key worker in my sons room at pick up. She said 'you're looking lovely today, did you have something on' I said no just a regular day but decided to get out of the leggings. She said some to the effect of the leggings are comfy and understandable but that what I was wearing today really suited me.

I think it was a nice little boost 😁

OK, so I just got the M&S navy cardi and t-shirt. I think belt is better?

Thanks to whoever recommended it, as you said not exactly a look that will set the world on fire but I am feeling 100 miles from where I started.
