Skirt/ jumper look. Am I too big for it? Or doing it wrong

Honestly, I like how this looks on other people but I am not sure if I am doing it right.

Pics are bad, we only have 1 proper mirror pushed into the spare room at the min. That's just the dress, jumper tucked and jumper untucked. Then in the wild.

I'm just not sure I pull it off.

Ok so the belt and the cardi look great - I have the cardi in black.

Go and try the M&S wide jeans with the belt and the cardi and I think then you might have nailed a great look.

Thanks, I was so unsure of having my 'pouch' on show like that. That blue cardi is in the bag to be returned this lunch time so I will hold onto it.

I tried every style of jeans in m&s last Thurs but it is a small shop and possibly didn't have all the styles. I'll have a look online and order them. It's free returns anyway so I could order a few styles/ sizes.

@megacat I know, they do have to go! They were bought about 4 years ago. The flairs I bought just after DS 2 was born slip down too much when I walk.

Thanks again everyone, there are a LOT of comments on here and I will get through them all hopefully.

I am finding it A 'LOT' trying to figure out what might work and it's hurting my head!! But jeans and a few cardi's or jumpers might pull me out of the leggings and massive t-shirts to begin with.

Neither river island skirt will suit OP.

EcruCardigan · 02/11/2025 13:42

The photo of you with the baby looks fine OP. That's got the vertical distraction.
The cardigan with jeans would look great if you untucked the cardigan - the belt draws the eye outwards, making your waist look low and wide, which it isn't.
I love the colour of the cardigan.

Your DC looks gorgeous.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2025 13:50

Definitely try the cable knit cardigan unbuttoned and untucked over a t-shirt, before you return it.

I don't like that long brown M&S dress at all, sorry, and don't think it would be flattering on many people.

Something like https://www.roman.co.uk/knitted-jumper-dress-14312908 might work with black tights, although I've not seen it in real life so can't vouch for the quality. The v neck should be flattering and it's short enough to show off your nice legs in tights.

I am done shopping for a while!! I am not able for it at all. I really do hate trying on clothes. Anyway, I didn't buy all of these but I got a good few bits. I also think I possibly will return some of them when I am back in town next week.

I bought these jeans in blue and black. I didn't buy the tigher beige top. I did buy the really big one thinking of the silky black skirt I got the other day but I'm not sure.

Bought these jumpers. I already owned the jeans.

I need basic jumpers that are not massive mens hoodies

I know it's not a good look closing it over my bag but I only spotted it going to the till. I bought the black but really wanted the green one! It is I'd say 75% the weight of a regular coat. You'd fit a jumper under no bother

There was nearly a total lack of v neck tops/ t shirts.

There never seem to be many V neck tops around. I got one of these yesterday in Dunnes, maybe you could unbutton to give a V type neckline?

I know it might sound daft but try men's jeans. I've swapped to mens and find they fit much better with my stomach! They don't cling bit with a belt and fitted top tucked in, they look fine 😊

Cantonet · 02/11/2025 17:15

If you do one thing this weekend watch this.
Melissa murrell has just put a new video out on YouTube styling LouLou. I think she's a similar age & in a similar position to you, plus she's also a hourglasss shape . She's a size 16-18, so a bit bigger but looks winderful in a range of both casual & dressier outfits.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 02/11/2025 17:23

I like the blue cable cardi but you should untuck it.

keepmeright · 02/11/2025 17:33

I've not read all the comments but had a look at your pictures. The wide leg jeans are too big for you so would give those ones a miss.

The camel coloured skirt looks great on you! Your legs look great! I personally think some of the dresses/skirts look too long for you. You really suit the shorter skirt & if I remember right you said you're only 37? The longer skirts look much older on you.

I still really like your original post of the rusty dress but with the cardigans/jumpers it just kind of loses it's shape & looks less good. I personally would wear a cropped button up cardigan with it.

I would go for shorter dresses/skirts with boots.

I find dresses are the best because they are a whole outfit & easier than mix/matching a skirt/top combo.

The skinny jeans with the tops look good on you too

I think the problem is that the skin tight jeans just look so old fashioned.

FastTurtle · 02/11/2025 17:50

Could you afford to go to a slightly more expensive shop for basics?

FastTurtle · 02/11/2025 17:51

The coat looks nice.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/11/2025 18:26

I don’t think the tight jeans work, sorry. They just look very old fashioned. The wider leg ones are better, but too long - could you try them in a shorter length?

I don’t like the cream/beige tops but the black one looks as if it could be useful.

Thanks I think i will get the skirt. With opaque black tight it seems like something I'd wear a lot.

The dreases being an all in 1 complete outfit is a big part of the appeal!!

With the rust dreas the jumpers are only needed when I am going outside so maybe just a long line cardigan would do.

Yes I'm happy to spend about €500 to build some basics into my wardrobe. The town I was in earlier has a very small selection. I wanted to get an idea of what suited

The tight skinny jeans are my own that I wore going there.

What do u think of the flairs? The wide leg ones were too long. I'm 5'4 so a lot of things are too long on me. But the shorter version is often a touch too short. Like the original jeans I posted on this thread.

Can I just say thanks so much for everyone's input. I do appreate it.

The flares look dated. The wide leg are much better, you just need a slightly shorter length.
If you have £500 then seriously £50 of that would be well spent on an online style analysis.
