Skirt/ jumper look. Am I too big for it? Or doing it wrong

Honestly, I like how this looks on other people but I am not sure if I am doing it right.

Pics are bad, we only have 1 proper mirror pushed into the spare room at the min. That's just the dress, jumper tucked and jumper untucked. Then in the wild.

I'm just not sure I pull it off.

I think you have a fab curvy figure but I don't think that skirt and jumper go together and the jumper is also huge! Try a slighrly snall jumper? A more fitred jumper not tight just a bit smaller would look fab on your waist. Maybe a black skirt?

applegingermint · 29/10/2025 09:37

I think there are other looks that go with your shape better. You’ve got a lovely slim waist and the jumper is both hiding that and hitting at the widest part of your hips, which is why it doesn’t look right. Do you have any cropped jumpers, as that would emphasise your small waist?

applegingermint · 29/10/2025 09:38

Alternatively, put a belt over the sweater around your waist.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 29/10/2025 09:41

I don’t think you’re too big for it all, but you need to pair either a full skirt with a fitted jumper, or a slim skirt with a bigger jumper for it to work.

Lovely dress btw. Great colour.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 29/10/2025 09:42

The reason that’s not working is it too much material top and bottom. Big jumper up top needs to be balanced with something more form fitting on the legs.

Agree with this. Do you have to wear the jumper with it? I like the dress as it is, lovely fitted top to it. Or maybe just try a fitted cardigan over it?

NorWouldTilly · 29/10/2025 09:46

The dress is lovely on you - but for goodness sake iron it.

The jumper is home wear (cords and Uggs maybe?) and doesn’t make a decent outfit with the dress if you want to wear the latter anywhere beyond your front door.

The dress is crying out for a well shaped tweed jacket in good colours, all your best jewellery, and some very well polished flat boots.

BBear · 29/10/2025 09:47

Ooh love the dress. Where is it from please?

Blingismything · 29/10/2025 09:47

The jumper would look better with a slim cut dark denim skirt. The dress would look better with an open waistcoat. This combo does not work for you.

BloodyBoilingInHere · 29/10/2025 09:49

I like the dress and the jumper, but separately. The colour of the dress is lovely, but paired with the colour of the jumper it looks a bit Mrs Christmas.

The dress highlights your waist, but then the jumper hides it. Both nice items, but they kind of cancel out the good points of each?

I think the jumper would be great with jeans, and the dress great on it's own or with a less bulky/big jumper over (maybe a shorter length, fine knit, wrap style that highlights your waist)

I was thinking the same. It is a nice dress.

It’s the wrong type of skirt - a full skirt from the waist isn’t going to work with a jumper unless it’s a slim jumper tucked into skirt.

For bulky jumper over skirt you need to be wearing a slip skirt or other slim skirt - something like this with boots and a big jumper would work https://www.zara.com/uk/en/satin-midi-skirt-p08338537.html?v1=470329948&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=11369331984&gbraid=0AAAAADqbk7Y-tguFLdiPvNhK0OxV7vDp0&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9obIBhCAARIsAGHm1mSseF-a5y8Evq1Zund1gLU2f7ALi8CHV7qngcbuFLiOQsQDy5Q5G24aAqahEALw_wcB

You can also use hair tie / clear plastic tie to give a big jumper some shape - tie an end and tuck it in so it’s more cropped and tucks in in at the waist. Like this m.youtube.com/watch?v=WXjtu8F9HYM

NorWouldTilly · 29/10/2025 10:02

That isn’t to say you should never wear knitwear over it - but given how beautifully this particular dress fits you, any knitwear needs to not interfere with that visual impression. Something cropped, something sleeveless … Or alternatively a cropped sheepskin gilet - but only a really nice one.

Possibilities:

This sort of look - browse site for inspiration:

Though ideally shorter. Or:

Colenimo

Again, take a look around the site for inspiration.

The jumper has to sit above the waist of the dress to not look shapeless. I’d maybe wear it with a crop, thin merino wool jumper - I think you have to only have bulky on either the top or the bottom and you have to be careful about where the hems cut you off to ensure this is in a flattering place. For me that’s high waisted and between my boobs and belly button (my life’s challenge is finding trousers that are high enough waisted - the crop tee / jumper trend is great for me though!)

LeadBubbles · 29/10/2025 10:09

I love the skirt + jumper look too! Like others say, it's not your body type, but the specific jumper and specific skirt combo that matters. I think for the skirt in the picture, you can try a thinner, shorter jumper to tuck in, or a thick, crop-top one that you don't need to tuck in. Keep trying different skirts/jumper combo, both of different heights/lengths/thickness and you'll find sth that works for you 😉

pontipinemum · 29/10/2025 10:10

OK thanks everyone. I've pulled out a few other idea's from my wardrobe. I also got new jeans.

I posted on here last week. I absolutely need an update to my wardrobe. I have been either pregnant or breastfeeding since 2020. I have lived in leggings and huge hoodys.

I want to feel nicer in how I look, but for it also to be a pretty quick thing to achieve. I work 3 days a week, have 2 toddlers and live on a farm!!

I have to keep the rust dress, I wore it to the pumpkin patch. I have it in navy as well though and can return that.

Excuse the slippers.

Jeans look fab on you.
I wouldn't wear the horizontal stripes cardi with the dress.
Out of what you've shown, the denim jacket is the best with the dress.

Mary28 · 29/10/2025 10:15

I think the jumper looks better tucked but it's a bit too bulky as a result of being tucked. A cropped jumper would probably be better.
I see the look you're going for, it's really cute and I think you can carry it off with that dress and a less bulky jumper.

Isn't it so annoying how bloody hard it can be to achieve a look that looks so effortless on others? I have this ALL the time. I just give up. Head to toe outfit planning is exhausting.

Itwouldbesonice · 29/10/2025 10:15

I think there’s too much bulk. A jumper over a dress won’t sit right and it would be uncomfortable too. Better to try just a skirt, maybe in a lighter fabric. I can’t wear the jumper and skirt look myself as it doesn’t suit me around the middle (short bodied.)

Itwouldbesonice · 29/10/2025 10:17

Can you try a dress with a lower waist?

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/10/2025 10:17

That jumper needs to be worn with a cord or denim mini and flat boots or if you want something longer, a fitted calf length denim skirt or a bias cut satin skirt. You need to contrast the volume and the textures.

With that dress I would put a thin belt on your natural waist and wear one of those more structured, boxy textured knit cardigans that end just at the waist - there are a lot around at the moment.

QueenOfToast · 29/10/2025 10:18

I love the jumpers over dresses look, but I think your jumper needs to be much shorter. See photo attached of the lovely styling of a knitting shop lady (La Bien Aimee on insta).
