Does my hair look fake?

I would really like honest opinions.

Due to decades of chronic health issues and many, many years being very anaemic my natural hair basically looks awful. Couple this with parents who have naturally very thin hair genetically I was never going to be blessed with thick locks.

Doesn't matter what I eat, which supplements I've tried, hair loss medication/products, getting my iron levels to normal ranges with infusions etc, I still and will forever have shite hair.

I reached a point around 10 years ago where I just couldn't stand going out with hair like it is. I could dye it, get good cuts, wear it up with a bun/ponytail attachment etc but it still really depressed me and frankly made me feel old......Then I discovered hair toppers.

At first I wore cheaper synthetic ones, they were ok but never integrated well with my own bio hair. I then moved on to human hair toppers (once I got over the ick of wearing someone else's hair). Good quality ethically sourced hair is not cheap though and I have spent a small fortune on them over the years and they are getting more and more expensive (many £1k+).
With every day wear they only last a year or two and sadly atm due to my chronic health issues worsening I've not been working much so have had to purchase a cheaper topper until my finances resolve but I have become very conscious that it looks like it doesn't belong to me.

I appreciate this is just a photo and you aren't seeing the hair in RL but can I ask what your opinions are? Does my hair topper look fake? Would you know by looking at me that I'm wearing helper hair?

I've added my own horrible hair so you can see the difference.

The picture looks pretty natural to me.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 12/10/2025 12:46

I wouldn’t have noticed at all!

Crispyapple · 12/10/2025 12:47

I think it looks lovely! Very natural, I wouldn’t have guessed

PrincessFluffyPants · 12/10/2025 12:47

Looks good!

Thornrose · 12/10/2025 12:47

I think it looks fantastic and very natural. I wouldn't look twice except to think what lovely hair you have.

ChiliFiend · 12/10/2025 12:48

I can't tell, personally - I only tend to notice when it's too long or thick for a person's age. What a great find x

Catarinabella · 12/10/2025 12:50

My friend chooses to wear one, I didn’t know, just told her that her hair looked lovely and then she told me her secret.

Homegrownberries · 12/10/2025 12:52

Thumbs up from me.

Same.

It looks really natural OP.

Oh bless you all, I will pop out to Tesco now and hold my head (and hair) up high!

I know realistically most people don't notice other people's hair unless it really stands out but I think I've become so obsessed with hair over the years that for me it's the first thing I see when I look at people and I'm so envious of lovely thick healthy looking locks.

I wouldn't know based on that photo that you were wearing a topper...looks natural

BaronessBomburst · 12/10/2025 12:53

It looks natural; I would never have noticed.

dudsville · 12/10/2025 12:59

You've made a fabulous choice, I never would have guessed, looks very natural!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 12/10/2025 13:02

I agree with the others, perhaps up close it looks less natural, but the colour, thickness and length is a good match for you. From the photo it looks natural and not something I’d give a second look to.

amber763 · 12/10/2025 13:06

It looks really good and natural. Id honestly never have guessed.

Viviennemary · 12/10/2025 13:08

It looks really good. Natural and not a bit fake at all.

It's very close up that I worry but I do have to keep telling myself that very few people get close into my personal space and those that do already know it's a hair topper and I don't think many people study other people's hair lines too intensely and are too busy with their own lives (hopefully).

It looks so natural, there is no way I’d think that was not your actual hair. I hope it makes you feel good, it sounds like you have a lot to deal with Flowers

Bluescissorsbluepen · 12/10/2025 13:13

I wouldn’t look twice but I’d also say that extension are so common now that I wouldn’t think negatively about them. I know a couple of hairdressers so do them for all sorts of reason but mostly cause people want longer thicker hair. So even if people did notice I don’t think they’d pass comment.

CalzoneOnLegs · 12/10/2025 13:15

It looks lovely OP

WearyAuldWumman · 12/10/2025 13:17

As others have said - you're looking good.

Daisymail · 12/10/2025 13:17

I agree with everyone else, looks very natural xx

HappyLucyLou · 12/10/2025 13:18

I think it looks great and natural in the photo.

Also, if I saw you in the street and if for any reason it didn't look quite as natural, my first thought would be - fair play, good for her. I think it says more about the other person if they think negatively of you (that they are the problem, not your hair topper, which is genius idea)

cantpullthetrigger · 12/10/2025 13:19

I think it looks great, and whether it was visible or not, I still wouldn’t think anything of it, other than you looked great.

It’s so common now and I’ve tried several myself for purely cosmetic reasons - clip in fringes and ponytails made from human hair. It doesn’t carry the stigma at all that it might have once so be confident that you look great and enjoy your new style!
