Does my hair look fake?

I would really like honest opinions.

Due to decades of chronic health issues and many, many years being very anaemic my natural hair basically looks awful. Couple this with parents who have naturally very thin hair genetically I was never going to be blessed with thick locks.

Doesn't matter what I eat, which supplements I've tried, hair loss medication/products, getting my iron levels to normal ranges with infusions etc, I still and will forever have shite hair.

I reached a point around 10 years ago where I just couldn't stand going out with hair like it is. I could dye it, get good cuts, wear it up with a bun/ponytail attachment etc but it still really depressed me and frankly made me feel old......Then I discovered hair toppers.

At first I wore cheaper synthetic ones, they were ok but never integrated well with my own bio hair. I then moved on to human hair toppers (once I got over the ick of wearing someone else's hair). Good quality ethically sourced hair is not cheap though and I have spent a small fortune on them over the years and they are getting more and more expensive (many £1k+).
With every day wear they only last a year or two and sadly atm due to my chronic health issues worsening I've not been working much so have had to purchase a cheaper topper until my finances resolve but I have become very conscious that it looks like it doesn't belong to me.

I appreciate this is just a photo and you aren't seeing the hair in RL but can I ask what your opinions are? Does my hair topper look fake? Would you know by looking at me that I'm wearing helper hair?

I've added my own horrible hair so you can see the difference.

I had never heard of toppers but they look amazing. I never would have known it wasn’t your own hair. I agree with other posters that most celebs must use them so if I saw someone with one I would probably just think they had amazing hair! I’ve been thinning for a few years now (perimenopause I think) and already had very fine hair to start with so am definitely going to look into a topper. I have a few questions. You said you can get them cut by a hairdresser but can you get them dyed? Also, can you swim with them as I have a real problem with my scalp burning at the beach since I started thinning? Lastly, if you wear one in an exercise class, what happens if you are upside down (eg downward dog in yoga)? Thank you!

It looks lovely.

I live in an area that has a high Orthodox Jewish population and I do notice wigs (I don't really know what a topper is), mainly because I get jealous of how amazing their hair looks. But I wouldn't have realized yours wasn't natural, OP. It looks great and, even better, if it makes you feel great that's all that matters.

It's great

You can definitely dye them, I personally haven't but I follow lots of alternative hair wearers online and they do it all the time, some suppliers will sometimes offer a dye or tint service.

I exercise all the time and tend to tie the topper back in a low ponytail, it always stays put.

Tbh, I never swim so can't answer that I'm afraid but I can't see it being a problem.

How can a person help how thick their hair is as they age ? What age limit is there for having long hair ? is it written down somewhere?

For god's sake - it's common knowledge that hair generally thins as you age, and as a result people keep it shorter. I'm not saying people should cut their hair as they age - chill.

Penguinsmum · 13/10/2025 12:34

Looks great!

Odd comment though, how can it be too long for age or thin for it. Plenty of older women have thick hair and plenty long hair.

I'm 45. What is too long or too thick for my age?

I'm in my fifties and I was wondering the same, mine's still pretty long/thick!

Thank you so much. Last question, can you recommend some people to follow online so I can get an idea of what to look for? Thank you for all your help & advice!

Of course, I am always happy to help anyone on their hair helper journey, I spent a year or two watching endless YT videos before I made any purchases, I was so nervous and unsure.

On YouTube my favourites are:-
Denise Sheets (she does also showcase wigs)
Mel's Be Ageless
The Lauren Ashtyn Collection
Wigs N'roses
Jill Lynn beauty Therapy

If you are on IG;-

Lacie Rodriguez
Her Hair My Head (This lady is UK based)
Bear with the Hair (also UK based)
Beautiful Betsyy (I have purchased one topper from her but it didn't last long and wasn't great quality but her tutorials are good)

On Tik Tok
Hair loss and Toppers
LH Enhancer
Uniwigs (they do nice toppers, I have purchased a couple)
The Lauren Ashtyn Collection have some fab clips of toppers on their clients

If you want to look at the Rolls Royce of hair toppers take a look at Follea Toppers (they start around £2k and go up to £6k +) - one day, when I win the lottery!

HTH 😊
