Does my hair look fake?

I would really like honest opinions.

Due to decades of chronic health issues and many, many years being very anaemic my natural hair basically looks awful. Couple this with parents who have naturally very thin hair genetically I was never going to be blessed with thick locks.

Doesn't matter what I eat, which supplements I've tried, hair loss medication/products, getting my iron levels to normal ranges with infusions etc, I still and will forever have shite hair.

I reached a point around 10 years ago where I just couldn't stand going out with hair like it is. I could dye it, get good cuts, wear it up with a bun/ponytail attachment etc but it still really depressed me and frankly made me feel old......Then I discovered hair toppers.

At first I wore cheaper synthetic ones, they were ok but never integrated well with my own bio hair. I then moved on to human hair toppers (once I got over the ick of wearing someone else's hair). Good quality ethically sourced hair is not cheap though and I have spent a small fortune on them over the years and they are getting more and more expensive (many £1k+).
With every day wear they only last a year or two and sadly atm due to my chronic health issues worsening I've not been working much so have had to purchase a cheaper topper until my finances resolve but I have become very conscious that it looks like it doesn't belong to me.

I appreciate this is just a photo and you aren't seeing the hair in RL but can I ask what your opinions are? Does my hair topper look fake? Would you know by looking at me that I'm wearing helper hair?

I've added my own horrible hair so you can see the difference.

Yeah it looks great. I'd never think it wasn't natural. Obviously it looks coloured. But really nice. I want one now! X

OriginalUsername2 · 12/10/2025 16:01

I didn’t know these existed. You look great, completely natural! Adding to my wish list.

Balloonhearts · 12/10/2025 16:02

I think it looks natural, I'd never notice.

BruFord · 12/10/2025 16:03

Honestly, it looks completely natural @LighteningBug, I’m not saying this to be nice, it really does.

PumpkinSpiceAndEverythingNice · 12/10/2025 16:03

I like it

OriginalUsername2 · 12/10/2025 16:05

Can I ask - how does it hold up in windy weather?

Looks amazing. Is it real hair?

It just looks like well-styled hair. The kind I see on people and wonder if they’ve been to the hairdressers or are just really good at styling themselves (because I’m hopeless). You want complete honesty, so since you’ve mentioned it’s a topper I can kind of tell, purely from the parting (because, of course, you can’t see the scalp). But had you not mentioned it I don’t think I’d have ever thought it looks ‘fake’.

My last topper was a silk top topper, it had such a realistic looking scalp area. I'm hoping to get another like that one but they are so expensive.

I have to say it looks way more natural than those hideous long, thick hair extensions I keep seeing.

P.s Does anyone have any tips for colour matching?

I usually buy my topper then get my hairdresser to colour match my own hair.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 12/10/2025 16:25

Looks great! Wouldn’t ever know!

FatAmy123 · 12/10/2025 16:29

Looks good. No one would ever know

Charlize43 · 12/10/2025 16:29

I think your hair looks nice.

I'm surprised you aren't more worried about your yellow face - you look jaundiced, despite the smiley make-up.

Looks fabulous, as said, so do I quite regularly and my hair is completely ok. I genuinely beleive many women who look like they have great hair wear them. Hair pieces have been around for ever;

mine sit about an inch back from my hair line, so my natural hair is what you see face on, and irs dyed tp the same colour. Even looking down it’s impossible to see it, as my natural hair covers the tiny little flat edge of it.

id recommend them to anyone. Good hair, thin hair. or hair loss.

Dawn884 · 12/10/2025 16:45

Definitely does not look fake, looks really lovely to me!

Karistyleaftea · 12/10/2025 17:10

It looks so good, really natural and such a good idea to get your hair colour matched.
I do agree with other posters that people don't think anything about anyone wearing toppers, extensions, false nails, etc anything to help you feel good about yourself.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/10/2025 17:20

It looks really natural

i do want to say though that even if it didn’t you should still wear it. All celebrities wear them, basically no one has their natural hair now, it’s totally fine to own looking fake. You look bloody great FlowersFlowersFlowers

outerspacepotato · 12/10/2025 17:23

I think it looks great.

A lot of women wear wigs here and it's a nice way to change things up when you want a temporary change or just to try out something new or look better. No shame in it.

BauhausOfEliott · 12/10/2025 17:23

It looks really good! It’s a great match and I’d never have noticed it wasn’t all your own hair.

LighteningBug · 12/10/2025 17:26

BananaSqueezer · 12/10/2025 15:38

It looks great, op. Really natural. The thing that worries me about toppers is the attachment - if your hair is already thin on top do these clip things attach easily and when taking it off, does it pull out any hair? My hair is thinning since hitting the menopause so I’ve thought about toppers myself.

To avoid traction alopecia I change the clips around every few months or so, it's a pain. My hair has become so much worse since menopause so I am mindful not to make matters worse.

I’d never heard of a topper before but I think that looks really great. Very natural.

66babe · 12/10/2025 17:30

Lovely , would never have known
