Does my hair look fake?

I would really like honest opinions.

Due to decades of chronic health issues and many, many years being very anaemic my natural hair basically looks awful. Couple this with parents who have naturally very thin hair genetically I was never going to be blessed with thick locks.

Doesn't matter what I eat, which supplements I've tried, hair loss medication/products, getting my iron levels to normal ranges with infusions etc, I still and will forever have shite hair.

I reached a point around 10 years ago where I just couldn't stand going out with hair like it is. I could dye it, get good cuts, wear it up with a bun/ponytail attachment etc but it still really depressed me and frankly made me feel old......Then I discovered hair toppers.

At first I wore cheaper synthetic ones, they were ok but never integrated well with my own bio hair. I then moved on to human hair toppers (once I got over the ick of wearing someone else's hair). Good quality ethically sourced hair is not cheap though and I have spent a small fortune on them over the years and they are getting more and more expensive (many £1k+).
With every day wear they only last a year or two and sadly atm due to my chronic health issues worsening I've not been working much so have had to purchase a cheaper topper until my finances resolve but I have become very conscious that it looks like it doesn't belong to me.

I appreciate this is just a photo and you aren't seeing the hair in RL but can I ask what your opinions are? Does my hair topper look fake? Would you know by looking at me that I'm wearing helper hair?

I've added my own horrible hair so you can see the difference.

I wish I could hug you op, my hair fell out from stress when my DD died a decade ago and I had to wear a wig. It’s much better now but not quite the same.

I think your topper looks great.

Thank you so much. I am really sorry for your loss.

Honestly yes I can - particularly as you stated you can - just like you can tell Kaitlin Olsen wears one in high potential. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t look good - it looks fab. These kind of things are so normalised (indeed kind of always have) that why would anyone think anything of it?

it looks good you like it that is ALL that matters

Out of curiosity could you tell me where you feel it looks fake, hopefully then I could try and improve or rectify that area.

It looks so natural!

My hair has thinned so much since menopause (it was fine to begin with) my scalp shows through, mainly on top, and there are gaps in my hairline. It gets me down so much I could cry sometimes and it takes ages to style my hair to try to disguise it. Thank you for posting, I'm going to have to get one of these!

I totally understand, I used to cry so much and still do when I look at my natural hair. Menopause is definitely making things worse for me.

Please do try a topper, they have given me a lot of my confidence back x

Your topper looks amazing and I would never have guessed.
I didn’t know these things existed and my hair looks very much like your natural hair, so I want to get one now!

Lovelamps · 12/10/2025 18:46

I think it looks really natural . I also think the photo without it looks nice too.

SisterMaryLuke · 12/10/2025 18:52

As a fellow topper wearer I totally get your anxiousness about wearing one. Yours looks absolutely great and no one is going to be any the wiser.

Cornishbelle · 12/10/2025 18:59

This honestly looks great and it's seriously making me consider doing the same for similar reasons. Thanks so much for sharing op

Willyoujust · 12/10/2025 19:04

Not at all! It looks lovely!

Shinyandnew1 · 12/10/2025 19:05

It looks great! I've never heard of a topper-is it different to a wig? More like a toupee?

Shinyandnew1 · 12/10/2025 19:06

How do they fix on?

AutumnLeeves · 12/10/2025 19:08

OP, can you feel the clips in your hair? I hope that makes sense! I’d love one of these for volume on second day hair! Can you wear your hair up with them?

StartingOverIn2025 · 12/10/2025 19:10

No it doesn’t look fake it looks really lovely, it’s such a lovely colour! You look fab!

BlindSpotForCats · 12/10/2025 19:22

I think it looks incredibly good. I have thinning hair and have never heard of toppers. I will look into it.

Blappengrap · 12/10/2025 19:26

It looks fine. The colour is obviously dyed but loads of people have dyed hair. No one will think anything of it

SleepDeprivedCatSlave · 12/10/2025 19:28

It looks very natural OP. My current topper is from Perfect Fringe and, as you say, the scalp area looks natural. I still worry about the bit where the topper meets my bio hair but then I feel shit/paranoid about my thin, horrible real hair too. Whatever I do I feel self conscious so I may as well have thicker hair.

I think when it gets to the point that you can’t mask the loss of your real hair with a good cut, colour etc then it’s time to consider fake hair. My hair will never grow back. I’ve accepted this. I have had enough of using thickening products that don’t actually solve the problem. Only extra hair works for me these days.

Many people use all sorts of products or procedures to improve their looks. I don’t see a topper or wig as being different from Botox or false lashes.

You look great OP and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Aguinnessplease · 12/10/2025 19:30

It looks - you look - great! So natural .

SleepDeprivedCatSlave · 12/10/2025 19:33

Shinyandnew1 · 12/10/2025 19:06

How do they fix on?

Mine has a comb at the front and six clips. If I clip it in properly I can’t feel it on my head. If I don’t take care when clipping it in then I can feel it but it doesn’t hurt or anything. I’ve worn toppers on and off for years so I know when I’ve not clipped it in correctly. I also tend to clip some of it back off my face so it looks more natural.

Trendyname · 12/10/2025 19:36

I couldn’t tell. It looks good.

Hysterectomynext · 12/10/2025 19:37

It’s gorgeous hair! I’m very tempted to get one now. I’ve never considered this before but you look amazing

BestieNo1 · 12/10/2025 19:44

Wow it looks so natural and really nice and that’s the honest truth 😊xx

DrowningInSyrup · 12/10/2025 19:52

ChiliFiend · 12/10/2025 12:48

I can't tell, personally - I only tend to notice when it's too long or thick for a person's age. What a great find x

I'm 45. What is too long or too thick for my age?

DrowningInSyrup · 12/10/2025 19:52

Looks great. I'd have no idea. Maybe keep the pricey ones for going out, out.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 12/10/2025 19:56

I wouldn’t have noticed. I had an iron infusion due to anaemia and lots of new hair growth. It’s baby soft and fine but filled out m scalp and gives me more body / volume at the roots. About £500 privately but it’s worth it.

I honestly think she'll struggle.

Looks v natural and lovely to me
