Does my hair look fake?

I would really like honest opinions.

Due to decades of chronic health issues and many, many years being very anaemic my natural hair basically looks awful. Couple this with parents who have naturally very thin hair genetically I was never going to be blessed with thick locks.

Doesn't matter what I eat, which supplements I've tried, hair loss medication/products, getting my iron levels to normal ranges with infusions etc, I still and will forever have shite hair.

I reached a point around 10 years ago where I just couldn't stand going out with hair like it is. I could dye it, get good cuts, wear it up with a bun/ponytail attachment etc but it still really depressed me and frankly made me feel old......Then I discovered hair toppers.

At first I wore cheaper synthetic ones, they were ok but never integrated well with my own bio hair. I then moved on to human hair toppers (once I got over the ick of wearing someone else's hair). Good quality ethically sourced hair is not cheap though and I have spent a small fortune on them over the years and they are getting more and more expensive (many £1k+).
With every day wear they only last a year or two and sadly atm due to my chronic health issues worsening I've not been working much so have had to purchase a cheaper topper until my finances resolve but I have become very conscious that it looks like it doesn't belong to me.

I appreciate this is just a photo and you aren't seeing the hair in RL but can I ask what your opinions are? Does my hair topper look fake? Would you know by looking at me that I'm wearing helper hair?

I've added my own horrible hair so you can see the difference.

You can’t tell op. I have a couple of the smaller ones, 4 x 4 inches base, and 12 inch length, my hair is actually completely ok, no issues, it’s long and long layers a bit like Kate Middleton, mine is just a little fine and I wear them for additional volume, bad hair days or when I can’t be arsed, etc, you simply would never know. I’ve been out in gale force winds and it stayed.

I also got one larger one, similar to yours, it just adds a bit too much volume for me as the one I got is really thick, but god it’s fabulous.

I’m absolutely convinced most celebs these days are wearing hair pieces, as when mine is in, my hair looks all thick and rich girl bouncy.

wearing hair pieces is as old as time, my grandmother wore them, and I’m in my fifties, and these days you can get relatively in expensive but high quality ones from China, excellent human hair. And the clips so small you’d never ever know it was there.

so please be assured, it is not perceivable, most people don’t even think about it, and many of us, who don’t have hair issues also wear them.

I am certain many celebrities wear them, I have become a little bit obsessed trying to guess which ones have them on. The super expensive ones are so natural looking it is impossible to tell.

If I ever win the lottery......

Can I ask - how does it hold up in windy weather?

They do hold up quite well. I used to be so worried and constantly asking dh and my dc if they could see the clips etc but they always assure me all looks ok.

My dh trimmed this one for me yesterday and had sprayed it with water so when I blow-dried I stood in front of the mirror and purposely aimed the dryer upwards to create quite a wind tunnel, it didn't show the clips or underside of the topper at all. That was quite reassuring.

I think loads of celebrities wear them too. I lost my hair because of medication I was on and then it grew back thin and fluffy like cotton wool. I love the fact the topper hair is so easy to style, plus I can take it off my head to style then just plonk it on. I find it easier than my own hair to be honest. I feel guilty about how much I spend but real hair can be expensive to maintain nowadays anyway. Also, it’s given me a lot of confidence back and losing my hair was incredibly difficult.

Not at all. It looks lovely!

Looks amazing. Is it real hair?

It is real hair. I have synthetic ones too but I find they don't integrate well with my own hair especially in the winter. When the weather is damp my natural hair tends to go a bit frizzy but the synthetic ones stay smooth and straight so I end up with this fuzzy underneath and smooth top part and I feel it doesn't look right, real human hair tends to go similar to my own bio hair so feels more natural.

To avoid traction alopecia I change the clips around every few months or so, it's a pain. My hair has become so much worse since menopause so I am mindful not to make matters worse.

OP, my hair has thinned over the last few years and I didn’t have a lot to start with. I’m thinking of toppers and yours looks fab. I just don’t really get them. Do you buy one and wear it 24/7? Or just pop it on if you’re going out? Do you need someone else to fix it for you or is it easy to do yourself? Do they feel secure?

Last question..do people you know notice. Like how do you turn up to work for the first day without everyone gawping and your completely new hair?

FlowersFawb · 12/10/2025 17:40

I would not notice at all! It looks so real!

I wear toppers too, op yours looks fabulous, can’t believe it was such a bargain!! Mines by Perfect Fringe, pricey but I love it

Looks beautiful, I love the colour.

Perfect Fringe toppers are my favourite, my first human hair topper was from there, I had 3 more from there but sadly can't afford them at the moment but will definitely purchase more once I return back to work.

I think your hair looks nice.

I'm surprised you aren't more worried about your yellow face - you look jaundiced, despite the smiley make-up.

Probably the lighting, I have had many bloods tests rand scans recently as I have endometriosis and awaiting surgery. All blood tests and scans are ok. I am pretty sure someone in RL would have picked up if I looked yellow. Thanks for the concern though.

I think she was joking about the emoji.

I tend to wear mine every day and throughout the day, I take it off in the evening as I like to give it a break but tbh, it feels so comfortable on that I often forget it's there.

A lot of women will have theirs cut and styled by their hairdresser but I purchased a good pair of hairdressing scissors and when I get a new topper dh trims the edges to match the length of my own hair then I stand in front of a mirror and cut in light feathering and baby hairs to make it look a little more natural. I don't like the helmet head look that some wigs and toppers can give, I like it a little more messy as I think that can give a more natural look.

I first started wearing them about 10 years ago. I chose colouring as near to my own natural colour as possible and kept the same length. Initially people did comment that my hair looked nice. Most of my family and close friends know but for anyone I have met since I have started wearing them I have never mentioned it and no one has asked.

Sorry Charlize43 what an idiot I am 😆

I wish I could hug you op, my hair fell out from stress when my DD died a decade ago and I had to wear a wig. It’s much better now but not quite the same.

I think your topper looks great.

Tiswa · 12/10/2025 18:10

Honestly yes I can - particularly as you stated you can - just like you can tell Kaitlin Olsen wears one in high potential. Doesn’t mean it doesn’t look good - it looks fab. These kind of things are so normalised (indeed kind of always have) that why would anyone think anything of it?

it looks good you like it that is ALL that matters

CinnamonJellyBeans · 12/10/2025 18:12

Looks 100% natural.

pumpkinscake · 12/10/2025 18:14

Looks great

LoveItaly · 12/10/2025 18:19

Looks fabulous! I can’t tell it’s not your natural hair from those photos.

MaggieBsBoat · 12/10/2025 18:25

Looks lovely OP!
Im thinking of getting a good wig soon after all it’s what all the celebs do!

NeverCouldGetTheHangOfThursdays · 12/10/2025 18:26

It looks so natural!

My hair has thinned so much since menopause (it was fine to begin with) my scalp shows through, mainly on top, and there are gaps in my hairline. It gets me down so much I could cry sometimes and it takes ages to style my hair to try to disguise it. Thank you for posting, I'm going to have to get one of these!

TypeyMcTypeface · 12/10/2025 18:31

I'd never spot that it wasn't your natural hair.
