Does wearing these make me look like a racist ….

I bought these as cheap practical wellies for the winter… fit well. But just put them on for a country walk with friends and the union jacks feel v prominent and with all the flag loonies making me worry about the message I am sending. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/tuc146088210?rec=PDP%5Btuc145899740%5D:attLightbox:extras:ARE:xsell:tuc146088210:YJYTGDGaZVn8xtAXUEAL not worn yet… click and collect so easy to take back. Considered just colouring the flag in . I can’t believe I’m feeling this way but would hate to make anyone feel intimidated.

taken them off and will wear other shoes. What would you do. A bit annoyed by it tbh having our flag stolen by these people.

If we overreact like this to every sight of a flag, the the racists have won. We need to normalise it in non-racist situations, like being on the side of a welly. I think you’re fine.

This.

I don’t think it’s snobbery to outline voting patterns. Political parties research them in significant depth - not all wealthy people vote conservative but it’s their base demographic. Black people typically voted for Kamala Harris rather than Donald Trump. These are just facts, similar to reform having a base amongst people who earn the lowest incomes in society. Wealthy people may well be virulent racists but according the bbc are less likely to paint a George’s cross outside their house!

I don't like the trend of putting people in boxes. It doesn't work.

And you're wrong by the way. 75% of the establishment are left wing. And the Red Wall voted Tory in 2019. It's all up for grabs.

MeEspresso · 12/10/2025 19:03

Shegotanology · 12/10/2025 14:55

@MeEspresso Glad that you find my distress so funny.
When the Union Jack flag is being used to push an agenda, especially around immigration and race, it blurs the line between patriotism and extremism. It's made a legitimate, national symbol, feel tainted for some.

It's a picture of a flag on some wellies.

if the fact people being ok with wearing them or the flag itself distress then I have no idea what to suggest. It's barmey.

would you like us to also wave some tin foil at the olympics?

the Union Jack flag isn't the one being painted on roundabouts anyway. That's the England flag.

Edited

Putting people in boxes would be to say all women vote democrat and males all vote republican. That doesn’t work but to say the guardian readers are more likely to be left wing than daily mail readers isn’t putting someone in a box - it’s stating a verifiable trend and reasonable assumption, although of course it won’t be accurate for everyone.

I’ve no idea why you’ve told me I’m wrong about the establishment as I didn’t mention them, am unsure who you are defining as the establishment and indeed how you know they are 75% left wing - I’ve no idea what point you’re attempting to make about that.

Regarding 2019, it was a shock precisely because it didn’t follow the expected trend. You might not want to put people in boxes but it is naive to think political parties aren’t directing targeted ads towards specific demographics because of their views. Think about the NHS ad with non white people taking up space - who was that sent to and why? Because it wasn’t sent to the entire population due to its overt racism.

Shegotanology · 12/10/2025 19:23

@MeEspresso Waving a flag at a sporting event is completely different. If you can't see the division that has been created lately by flag-waving idiots, that's on you.

😂although not to be recommended if OP lives in certain parts of Lanarkshire!

tragichero · 12/10/2025 19:55

I absolutely loathe and despise all the flags they have put up round here - and I would have no objection to your wellies!

I was expecting white ones with red crosses all over them to be honest!

It is sweet of you to be concerned tho.

TheExcitersblowingupmymind · 12/10/2025 19:58

Ah Father I hear you're a racist now.
One of the best episodes of Father Ted.

I try to avoid wearing anything red, white, or blue.

I have a mini with the union jack on the roof. Well, had, I had it crushed last week.

Can't be too careful.

This made me laugh 😊

Don’t forget you absolutely must not be caught eating a roast dinner. God forbid, such a nationalist dinner.

Fluffyblackcat7 · 12/10/2025 20:06

Leavesfalling · 12/10/2025 10:51

Yes better send them back. And anyone else who has racist wellies, throw them away quickly before Other People judge you. I've got a racist union jack biscuit tin so I will burn it (discreetly in the dead of night.)

🤣

jonthebatiste · 12/10/2025 20:12

I think that if a pair of wellies had a photo of Nigel Farage on them, so inoffensive are wellies that I’d probably assume the person didn’t realise who he is and just bought them because they were cheap or something. No, these wellies aren’t racist!

GryffindorsSword · 12/10/2025 20:32

Whatever you do, don't go to the last night of the proms. 😬😅

StewkeyBlue · 12/10/2025 20:41

Yes of course it's different, it's a lot more in your face than a pair of damn wellies! Being in legitimate distress over the United Kingdom flag on a pair of wellies is one of the most batshit things I've read on here. Not everybody, business maker, clothing item, branded Union Jack flag or anyone who wants to wave the flag, is out to offend you or anybody else.

if people are genuinely up in arms about a country waving its own flag, or branding the flag on clothes, then that's on them. I am not denying racism doesn't exist and I'm not denying the agenda some of these ENGLISH flags that are being painted are making some people, rightly so, feel a certain way.

but being legitimately distressed over a pair of bloody wellies takes the biscuit.

I think you're using sweeping generalisations and class based presumptions in a highly volatile time for politics in this country. Anyway, we shall see who votes Reform in 2029.

I take it you didn't read the Telegraph this week as it contained the answers to all your questions about 75% of the establishment being left wing (which includes the professions). Which slightly contradicts your assertion that most wealthy people usually vote Conservative. That is no longer the case.

To assume anything makes an ass out of you and me..

Ah the telegraph - a great independent resource of information, but you dismiss the BBC?! I did not read it or indeed assume anything? Anyway, I’m not going to debate when you continue to misrepresent what is being put to you. The political polls may incorrect - that has happened before and will happened again - but they probably have access to more information that you personally have so for the moment I’ll rely on the facts as best research can provide, rather than your opinion .

I know. Anything with a flag on I hate. Shame it is like that. Wouldn't be seen dead near a flag now.

The source that the Telegraph used is Electoral Calculus UK.

Anyway, cool your wellies. I'm just pointing out you're being a bit old school in your punditry. Obviously!

Mylittlebobble · 13/10/2025 07:18

I clicked on the link expecting something different. They look fine to me. If I noticed the flag, I would assume it's a brand logo rather than a political statement.

Sevenamcoffee · 13/10/2025 07:29

If I saw them on someone I’d just think the wellies were made in Britain if I even noticed it. But, at the same time, I wouldn’t wear them myself.

abracadabra1980 · 13/10/2025 07:57

It appalls me that you even have to think such a thing. So glad I live in an area where nobody would bat an eyelid at such a nice pair of wellies. The whole flag thing is ridiculous.

HectorPlasm · 13/10/2025 08:37

Get a grip

Saracen · 13/10/2025 08:49

If I saw someone wearing huge Union Jacks, the question would enter my mind that they MIGHT be racist, but I wouldn’t come to any conclusions. These are fairly unobtrusive anyway though, and look like they could just be branding.

TheGrimSmile · 13/10/2025 08:53

ERthree · 12/10/2025 11:12

I don't know whether to be angry or heartbroken that the very sight of our flag provokes such outrage, the very same flag that draped the coffins of our military killed overseas. Shame on every British person that has a fit of the vapours over our flag but worships the palestine flag.
OP Wear your wellies, it wouldn't be racist.

It is sad that right wing thugs have hijacked our flag. But they have. And now because of them, it is embarrassing to wear anything that might lead people to believe that you share their ideology. So for this reason, I would not wear anything with a Brirtish / English flag on it. Blame the flag shaggers, they've caused this.
