Does wearing these make me look like a racist ….

I bought these as cheap practical wellies for the winter… fit well. But just put them on for a country walk with friends and the union jacks feel v prominent and with all the flag loonies making me worry about the message I am sending. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/tuc146088210?rec=PDP%5Btuc145899740%5D:attLightbox:extras:ARE:xsell:tuc146088210:YJYTGDGaZVn8xtAXUEAL not worn yet… click and collect so easy to take back. Considered just colouring the flag in . I can’t believe I’m feeling this way but would hate to make anyone feel intimidated.

taken them off and will wear other shoes. What would you do. A bit annoyed by it tbh having our flag stolen by these people.

@MeEspresso Glad that you find my distress so funny.
When the Union Jack flag is being used to push an agenda, especially around immigration and race, it blurs the line between patriotism and extremism. It's made a legitimate, national symbol, feel tainted for some.

I try to avoid wearing anything red, white, or blue.

I have a mini with the union jack on the roof. Well, had, I had it crushed last week.

Can't be too careful.

Good for you! Best to have it crushed because you can’t even reapaint it as the brake lights have a flag motif 😂😂😂😂

This has to be a joke?? No one could possibly think a small monochrome flag on wellies makes them look like a racist?

mumsnet is unhinged

Well some people on here think any sign of an England flag OR British flag within 300 yards of you makes you a bigot/a racist, so it's perfectly understandable that some people may worry about being perceived as racist if they DARE to have their own country's flag on their clothing!

Doesn't make it tainted for me.

Because I'm a highly suspicious character.🧐

I’ll grant you it was odd, school is in a nice area, not exactly what you’d expect but true nevertheless. Umbrella was a golf one left by my dad and not used any more 🤣

Shegotanology · 12/10/2025 15:23

@Zov And that is fine.

Wouldn’t it be more constructive to hate racists who appropriate things for their own ends?

Yes, I hate racists and people who support them appropriating things. You can hate more than one group!

ItIsMyName · 12/10/2025 15:28

In the unlikely event I would notice, I would assume it was the Karrimor logo. As per other posters , if it bothers you just use a Sharpie to cover it.

newusernamex1000 · 12/10/2025 15:36

I have loads of different Union Jack things. A cup, my food shopping bag, I even have a cushion. I don’t see the issue with anyone flying the flag, no matter what their political position.

In many countries, if it were a monochrome version of the flag, how would you know it's that flag? How would you know if it were French, Irish, Italian if it were three vertical sections not in their actual colours?

This isn't really relevant, it was just something thst stuck me.

Zov · 12/10/2025 15:55

I'm not being a snob - honestly - but for £16, those boots will probably fall apart after they've been worn half a dozen times! 😬

Nannyfannybanny · 12/10/2025 16:46

It's not a Union Jack,that's a flag on a ship
In the 60s Carnaby Street, everything was covered in Union Flags.
.

CharlotteCChapel · 12/10/2025 17:07

I was expecting them to be red , white and blue in a union jack pattern. These are fine

That's bats. Absolute batshit. What a nutter.

Although not sure what a "nice area" has anything to do with voting intention or not obviously.

Do.we have to go around hating groups now?.Bit Orwellian?

I'm not a snob and then trot out a comment suggesting that only expensive items could possibly have any longevity or value 😂
I bet you love wanking on about the 'vimes boot theory' too, don't you?

In the real world, I have clothing from primark, tesco, george, new look etc that has lasted 20 years, and items from more expensive brands that have bobbled or got stained/torn after 1 wash/wear.

Southshore18 · 12/10/2025 17:29

I wouldn't wear them but equally, couldn't give a crap and a second thought if I saw someone else wearing them.

PollyAmourous · 12/10/2025 17:30

I wouldn’t have anything flag these days sadly.

netflixfan · 12/10/2025 17:30

They make you look like a nationalist.

LillyPJ · 12/10/2025 17:32

I understand your concerns but the flag is quite unobtrusive so I wouldn't worry about it. Besides, you ought to get wellies muddy so the flags might not show at all!

SpudsAndCarrots · 12/10/2025 17:33

I was expecting full flag patterned wellies, which yes would be a bit much! Those like nice and classy.

Edited

I was saying to someone just today that I have ancient Primark t-shirts that still fit well, whereas the last 3 t-shirts I got from M&S (about 7 times the price) went out of shape in their first wash.

Working class areas far more likely to vote reform - 39% compared to 19% of vote in affluent areas. BBC has noted (but not given stats) that flag displays/painting kerbs etc more likely in deprived neighbourhoods.

Yes I did assume there would be some snobbery involved. We never learn.

I don’t think it’s snobbery to outline voting patterns. Political parties research them in significant depth - not all wealthy people vote conservative but it’s their base demographic. Black people typically voted for Kamala Harris rather than Donald Trump. These are just facts, similar to reform having a base amongst people who earn the lowest incomes in society. Wealthy people may well be virulent racists but according the bbc are less likely to paint a George’s cross outside their house!
