Does wearing these make me look like a racist ….

I bought these as cheap practical wellies for the winter… fit well. But just put them on for a country walk with friends and the union jacks feel v prominent and with all the flag loonies making me worry about the message I am sending. https://www.argos.co.uk/product/tuc146088210?rec=PDP%5Btuc145899740%5D:attLightbox:extras:ARE:xsell:tuc146088210:YJYTGDGaZVn8xtAXUEAL not worn yet… click and collect so easy to take back. Considered just colouring the flag in . I can’t believe I’m feeling this way but would hate to make anyone feel intimidated.

taken them off and will wear other shoes. What would you do. A bit annoyed by it tbh having our flag stolen by these people.

I’m sure they wouldn’t have given a shit! Why would they ? The problem is with you.

Well I’m not sure I have a ‘problem’ lol. I just decided to give him a plain neutral mug instead.

In 2012 everything had a Union Jack on it - sometimes designed with flowers or fruit, they were pretty! I really wish we could just get back to recognising both the Union Jack and the flag of St George as flags associated with a country, not an extreme political view held by a minority of people. I’d wear them, and tell anyone speaking as though I support Reform that I absolutely don’t!

Our ironing board cover has a pink union jack cover on it. We found it flytipped outside a rundown house clearance store at nighttime and thought, oh this is actually better than our crappy ironing board. We still have it and have used it for years. Not getting rid of it just because it has a union jack on it.

No. But it's really sweet and kind of you that you actually consider this, and it's appreciated.

Have a lovely time!

Don’t be so wet

If we overreact like this to every sight of a flag, the the racists have won. We need to normalise it in non-racist situations, like being on the side of a welly. I think you’re fine.

This. ^ Absolutely not @Attictroll A person is not a racist purely because they fly the UK or England flag, (or have any clothing or footwear with it on!!!) Despite what SOME people on the internet would have you believe.

Enjoy your boots! 😎

Mrsknowitall · 12/10/2025 13:39

Oh ffs have a day off will you!

seashoreshellsky · 12/10/2025 13:40

i am over sensitive to such things and these aren’t racist no.

skyeisthelimit · 12/10/2025 13:41

It isn't racist to wear something with the flag of our country on.

What a sad world that we live in that you need to ask this question.

Leavesfalling · 12/10/2025 13:42

I think if you're going for a racist welly, OP, a KKK sign might be better? I just don't think the UK flag does the job?

NeedWineNow · 12/10/2025 13:42

Oh ffs what is wrong with people that they even think this

what are we supposed to do if Team GB wins a medal and flags are raised at the medal ceremony - fly another flag or none at all? What about major sporting events, commemorations etc?

I really despair of this country.

I know right. It comes to something when people are scared to wear something with their OWN country's flag on it. 🙄 Only in this country. Everyone else, across the world, flies their flag happily, and no-one complains. It never ceases to amaze me, the amount of people who are offended by the British - and English flag, in the very country where the flag belongs!!! Confused

JohnBullshit · 12/10/2025 13:49

I always chip in on flag threads to make my discomfort with lamp post and crossing flags known, and honestly, OP, those boots wouldn't even register. They're not exactly swastika covered jackboots.

Limehawkmoth · 12/10/2025 13:51

Sad thing is that 10 years ago I’d have not batted an eyelid. Remeber when Union Jack was trendy for interior design…cushions etc

but now I’d raise an eyebrow and put you down to a reform voter.

If you’re fine with that , go ahead and wear.

If you’re not reform, you could put an additional sticker on back to say “i don’t vote reform” or balance it with some red rose/yellow bird/blue tree stickers, 🤷‍♀️🤣

Yep. People are getting more and more fragile as time goes on.

MeEspresso · 12/10/2025 14:17

Shegotanology · 12/10/2025 13:30

in the political climate that we're living in, no, I wouldn't wear them.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

SharonBe · 12/10/2025 14:19

Will anyone even see that if you're wearing trousers? I wouldn't wear them but I'm Scottish :-). If they weren't patent I'd say cover them with a permanent marker.

I think the point is that we have a history in this country of only waving flags at celebratory events like sporting events, the queen, etc

similarly we only leave them up for periods of mourning nationally (which is why the idiots that only get the flags half way up the lamp post make me think that king c has snuffed it and I’ve missed it 😱

we don’t in this country have a culture and tradition of flying flags all the time. Unlike America we do not take oaths of Allegiance to a flag that symbolises a written constitution . We don’t even have a written constitution. We are not America, or any number of other countries that place a similar focus on the flag being symbolic of allegiance to that country.

Even our military uniforms don’t have a big focus on Union Jack. Other ensigns take as much prominence, as they’re much older in most cases. Up until very recently union badges were only added to uniform during and after active deployment. The colours at trooping of colour are those of regiments, not the union flag/jack.

we never swear , or be asked to swear alligence to anything or anyone. I can call KC what I want, say what I want about him and any monarch. I can petition publicly for his removal. Thank goodness. Yep, I can be arrested for actual threats to his person. Like I could with anyone else. I can also theoretically be tried for treason- but only if a break the official secrets act that no one forces me sign

our flag has been a purely decorative thing for decades. Since its adoption in 1908 . An expression of celebrating the country coming together for a specific event, and a regular cycle of it turning up in fashion from punk to banksy. Something to wave to feel inclusive. That’s it.

but it also carries a decades old association with facism…trotted out as a rallying call by mosely brown shirts, national front, and now Reform (with their PR machine in overdrive trying to prove their not another flavour of far right).

I personally object to making a piece of fabric represent who we are as a nation (be it uk or individual nations) . We don’t need an American style dog whistles of alligence to a symbol. We need people who think critically about what they want this country to be and actually vote accordingly. Show your loyalty to the country and its population by voting. Not sitting on your backside whinging or flying flags like so many do. I have no time for anyone who says they don’t like what’s happening to the country, but there is no point in voting. Wirte to your MP or pet ion to get proportional representation of you feel that. Just don’t sit around and think stringing up a bit of fabric will change anything for the better.

Cool story bro 👍

Megifer · 12/10/2025 14:35

I try to avoid wearing anything red, white, or blue.

I have a mini with the union jack on the roof. Well, had, I had it crushed last week.

Can't be too careful.

Bipitybopitybo · 12/10/2025 14:54

This has to be a joke?? No one could possibly think a small monochrome flag on wellies makes them look like a racist?

mumsnet is unhinged
