I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

The white shorts make it look like her bottom half is 3x the size of her top half! Not a good look.

I disagree. I love the look. Maybe it’s a bit too current for your tastes.

Maybe 🤷🏻‍♀️. You seem to be saying that like it’s an insult.

Tinymrscollings are you suggesting that the majority of older women look like the picture you have posted? Not where I live or travel they don’t. For a start if you wore that top, you would either have to go bra less, or wear a special type of bra, maybe strapless, unless you were happy to have your entire bra straps on display.
I don’t find tight tops cool in hot weather. Neither do I find strapless bras comfortable when it’s hot. Baggy, sleeveless tops need a bra, again unless you have very small breasts which ties into my earlier post of being fit, young and very toned.
I don’t really care what anyone wears unless it’s wildly inappropriate. However, don’t kid yourself that the majority of people who wear shorts and a vest are in some way superior to anyone seen wearing a dress.

What I said:

  • It’s disingenuous to pillory the OP for saying she thinks floral dresses are ugly and then say that shorts and a tank top and interesting shoes is scruffy
  • I googled and posted a picture of smart S,TT & IS to illustrate the point that there is more than one type of S,TT & IS
  • I confirmed that this was just an example, not an outfit I particularly liked or would wear but that was definitely not scruffy.
  • I observed it was a bit much for people to tell the OP off for saying she hates floral dresses cause it’s mean and then say they thought the picture I posted was awful.
  • I made a small joke implying the beautiful model in the picture was me

what I didn’t say:

  • older women all look like the picture I have posted
  • I recommend this outfit
  • People who wear S,TT & IS are superior to people who wear dresses
  • anything about bras
  • anything about what people in the gulf states wear when it’s hot
  • anything about myself, what I like and what I don’t like or what I think about the distressing issue of floral dress prejudice.

I’m so confused

KateMiskin · 01/08/2025 16:55

I just bought this for transitional work dressing.

I like plain dresses. I know it's not trendy- no giant puff sleeves and tiers- but it will suit me.

Oh images have to be reviewed now. Should have linked.

That's really nice, a good cut and the proportions are good.

Only if you think that ‘current’ means ‘superior’ I guess!

Well, according to an acquaintance who’s a size 16, it hides everything and isn’t sweaty!

Londontown12 · 01/08/2025 17:06

I’m not keen on that look either op !
Didn’t actually see many myself in London !
Was u central it could be tourists ?
I mainly seeing woman in very casual clothes when I’m out and about !

Lauralou19 · 01/08/2025 17:10

I love flowery dresses and love wearing dresses in Summer. Perhaps because we’re all in boots, jeans, big coats from October -April (which I do also like), its nice to wear something that feels Summery…in Summer!

Am always looking for shirt dresses in cotton which are not black. Surprisingly hard to find!

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2025 17:15

R0ckandHardPlace · 01/08/2025 12:51

I get you, OP. I went into London yesterday and saw loads of women who looked like they were going to a fancy dress party as Little Bo-Peep.

That's nothing to do with being floral though. My floral dresses don't have big sleeves or loads of flounces. Some are loose fitting but none are sack like.

Yes, I don't like to wear black in summer.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/08/2025 17:17

Tinymrscollings · 01/08/2025 15:32

Yikes. Trod on a nerve there OP 🤣

Post after disingenuous post implying that shorts, a tank and interesting shoes could only possibly mean sawn off jeans, a vest top from the supermarket and a pair of Irregular Choice dolly shoes with dog faces on or something.

A google of how people are wearing shorts gives loads of tailored shorts worn with all manner of sleeveless tank style tops in great fabrics and interesting shoes (mesh pumps, kitten heeled sandals, loafers). Not easy to pull off, and I struggled to find any diversity of body shapes as examples, but that’s beside the point.

Just as there are shorts and a tank (chic edition) and shorts and a tank (gardening edition), there are floral dresses (airy, elegant edition) and floral dresses (polyester sack edition).

The devil’s in the detail, as with all things getting dressed.

There ARE a lot of dreadful floral dresses knocking about. Incoherent colour palettes, busy patterns chosen cause they don’t need matching on the seams and can be stamped out of giant bolts of fabric by a machine with no wastage, cheap fabric and no finishing. Invariably they are constructed to fit everyone and noone, simultaneously. Tonnes of frills, tiers and unnecessary statement sleeves and ruching and pointless ties to distract from/compensate for the fit, construction and fabric.

There are some beautiful ones designed with an eye to the women who will wear them rather than the amount of them they can shift before it starts raining. I’d put Me + Em versions in this category, by and large so it’s interesting the OP chose that brand.

There are people on this thread telling on themselves by getting so out of proportion defensive and mean. I don’t think anyone who is comfortable in their skin and their clothes would be in the slightest bit bothered if someone else thinks that some of the dresses that they enjoy wearing (not their dress specifically) are ugly.

I doubt that's what the OP was wearing.

Plasticwaste · 01/08/2025 17:35

Lol at all the ugly floral dress-wearing offenders in the thread.

You are right, OP. There are too many ugly floral dresses in summer.

Brownbearwhitebear · 01/08/2025 17:39

Slightly off topic but don’t people’s feet get ridiculously hot in trainers? I have quite a few pairs I love and can’t wait to start wearing them again but they would have felt awful the past few weeks. Even my Birkenstocks have needed a swoosh round with some bicarb because they got a bit sweaty 😳

@Tinymrscollings your outfit is lovely and really suits you. You look everything but scruffy.

I agree so much with this! These last couple of months whilst it’s been really hot- the thought of socks and trainers kills me. My feet need to breathe. I’ve lived in sandals for weeks.

DarkForces · 01/08/2025 17:45

I've lost about 4 stone this year. I really don't care what anyone else wants me to wear. I'm wearing a short black dress that nips in at the waste and has flowers scattered across it. Look away if it hurts your eyes. I've had enough of baggy jumpers

Divebar2021 · 01/08/2025 00:15

Hmmm I’m kind of intrigued by the reference to Me & Em. I wouldn’t have pointed to that brand as a particular market leader particularly. I’m not into dresses that much myself but I don’t hate them . What do you think we should all wear wearing instead then OP. Perhaps you could post some inspiration pics for us.

Exactly Me and Em are not cheap at about 250 a pop on average.

CountryQueen · 01/08/2025 17:48

Smart tank sounds awful 🤣

StarlightLady · 01/08/2025 17:49

Same here l can’t wear trainers with or without socks in the heat. Nor a bra unless l’m at work.

Ticktockwatchclock · 01/08/2025 18:04

I thought travel was supposed to allow a person to experience other places and cultures, expanding the mind. Surely said person who travels should accept that other countries do things differently and an intelligent person would accept that their own country and how they do things is not perfect or the only way to live?
Coming on a UK forum and calling the clothes worn by the women ugly is not only crass and rude, but shows that the OP is unable or unwilling to benefit from travel and expand their mind. Maybe it would be better if they stuck to travelling in their own country!
