I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Well, that's fine if you haven't read the whole thread, but most people are making the point not to judge if you choose to wear a dress, or if you don't comply with the dress code of the OP, a vest and shorts. She claims floral dresses are ugly.
Also - vipers? Women are entitled to opinions, it's only about clothes. Why are we routinely called names for doing so?

"vipers" is just an age-old MN term...

To ask, why are users of Mumsnet referred to as vipers? | Mumsnet

I see this often, is there a reason in? Always wonder!

Slightly off topic but don’t people’s feet get ridiculously hot in trainers? I have quite a few pairs I love and can’t wait to start wearing them again but they would have felt awful the past few weeks. Even my Birkenstocks have needed a swoosh round with some bicarb because they got a bit sweaty 😳

Yes, my rule of thumb is that if it’s hot enough to wear a summer dress and bare legs then my feet will feel hot and constricted in trainers. I’ve nothing against the ‘summer dress and trainers’ look on other people but I need my sandals in summer. Personally, trainers in a heatwave would be as uncomfortable as accessorising with a woolly hat and winter gloves.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 18:25

Doesn't make it pleasant.

Trainers are more comfortable though. They might be hot but I find at my heels.Get awfully dry and cracked in sandals
The only way to prevent that is to wear closed in shoes and socks

CaptainMyCaptain · 01/08/2025 18:37

I wear trainers and socks plus orthotics because I get plantar fssciitis just wearing sandals. My feet don't get sweaty.

I thought travel was supposed to allow a person to experience other places and cultures, expanding the mind. Surely said person who travels should accept that other countries do things differently and an intelligent person would accept that their own country and how they do things is not perfect or the only way to live?
Coming on a UK forum and calling the clothes worn by the women ugly is not only crass and rude, but shows that the OP is unable or unwilling to benefit from travel and expand their mind. Maybe it would be better if they stuck to travelling in their own country!

It is rude! This forum is about style advice not individual style insulting. You must remember that she comes from a country where the majority of people don’t have passports.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 01/08/2025 18:39

My feet don’t ever get particularly hot, and never sweaty.

Gowlett · 01/08/2025 18:44

I’d love to look chic, not shite, in shorts & a t-shirt.
Floral dresses are easy to work with, just throw it on.

Like most clothes, not all floral dresses are equal.
Some are polyester sacks, but again, ease & comfort.

Daftypants · 01/08/2025 19:13

I love a midaxi length floaty dress in warm / hot weather.
I am a bit tired of florals , prefer different prints .
Also I am quite fair skinned so don’t suit pastels.
you would never find me in shorts and a vest top ever 🤣 too old , too pale and my legs ( nicely shaped ) have too many veins

It’s just a different sense of style. We don’t get much summer in the uk so we go for it with bright colours and dresses. I guess it’s a morw feminine look. I guess tank and shorts are ok but also assume skinny legs.
Different styles again in other parts of europe.

Newsenmum · 01/08/2025 19:26

I used to wear tank top and vest bur isnt that a bit boring??

Newsenmum · 01/08/2025 19:28

would you go to india and ask why everyone was wearing ugly saris? Or kaftans in Morocco? Thought not!
you may have seen some bad quality dresses but I get the impression you just dont like the stylr here.

I live in NY! There are seriously nowhere near the amount of women wearing dresses, except on a Sunday, here as there are there. It blew my mind because everyone was so hot and bothered and complaining they were hot and bothered and I was just like, "So why are you all wearing such long bloody dresses?!!"

Well, they're floaty and therefore cooling. It's a celebration of summer. It's also nice to wear a dress, it's a very feminine thing. I like it in summer when I'm sitting on the bus observing the women in their dresses, though I don't much like flowery prints. Many of them are downright unflattering. But some are pretty.

Since when was MN "pleasant"?! 🫢🤣 as this thread rather proves! x

iamnotalemon · 01/08/2025 19:48

Don’t forget the white trainers worn with the flowery dresses.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 17:16

Yes, I don't like to wear black in summer.

Ah, for me summer is the only time I wear black. Black in autumn/winter is too depressing. Black in summer is chic. (IMO)

redriding1976 · 01/08/2025 20:44

I've spent many years in the USA and it has to be the worst representation of women anywhere with shorts and tank tops especially those soft fabric shorts and the top that cuts across at an unflattering length! You can always tell the British visitors as they often tend to be the better dressed.

TenaciousDeeds · 01/08/2025 20:57

“In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!”

@EconomyClassRockstar your outfit sounds lovely, but you’re obviously slim and young! The ‘window’ for that outfit is quite small, whereas a loose, long summer dress can be worn by so many different age groups and sizes.

I think you’re being a bit smug TBH.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 21:16

She's not necessarily young. My 78 year old neighbour wears shorts and vests, she's a keen gardener. She always dresses to go out, though.

I think this it. At work today we were all complementing each other on our patterned summer frocks- it's a thing a declaration of summer.

I'm 66 and still have decent legs. My knees, however, are a different thing entirely.

I'm nearly 66, my legs are okay, not great, - but my knees!!!!! I tried on a pair of shorts the other day and decided that really the public don't need to see that - into the pile of clothes to donate they went.

Litamum · 01/08/2025 22:30

Agree 100%!

I honestly feel nurseries should face much stricter regulations around the food they serve to little ones. The first two years of life are so important for shaping a child’s taste preferences and even their long-term metabolic health. The World Health Organization (WHO) clearly recommends no sugar or salt at all before 1 year old, and ideally no added sugar until at least age 2.

That’s why I’m getting really frustrated with my son’s nursery. They regularly give babies custard, cakes, jam – even sandwiches to under-1s! And to make it worse, they don’t allow parents to send in their own meals, so we have no say in what they’re being fed.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Does anyone know who I can contact or where I can make a formal complaint about this? It just feels wrong that nurseries can ignore these basic health guidelines.

Too much flappy material round your legs - too clingy in the main round largish tummies!

The flappy material around your legs creates a cooling breeze, and I've never in my life worn a dress which was clingy around my tummy. Dresses do come in many styles.
