I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

@mediumdicketh
Love that phrase: let your rolls hang out Janice, wear the rainbow suit
Going to use this one.

I like shorts and a vest and walking sandals but not in a city ( although Bermuda shorts could work with a shirt). I also wouldn’t wear flip flops in the city either - however fashionable they’re deemed to be. )
I don’t think women in the U.K. are particularly stylish as a collective but there’s quite a diversity of style and a great deal of freedom to wear what you want. My Swedish friend has commented on how judgemental everyone is about clothing in Sweden which is why they’re all in their neutral uniforms… terrified of being judged. Her friends enjoy people watching in London because of the diversity.
Women in North America are not that stylish either outside of a big city. Maybe somewhere in the US there’s a British woman banging on about their clamdiggers and rhinestone t shirts but I can’t imagine they are - we tend to have better manners.

I love the diversity of style. When we were younger we'd phone one another and ask "Are you going to wear a dress?" but young women now are happy to have one friend in a LBD while another wears jeans for the same occasion and it's great that it doesn't matter.

I agree with OP. I get floaty summery dresses, they are cool and comfortable in hot weather.

However, a lot of this season's dresses are incredibly ugly and unflattering. Some of them even look crap on the models, and even worse on 'real' women.

Of these the middle one is just about okay because of the fabric, the other two I wouldn't be seen dead in. The puffed sleeves scream 'mutton dressed as lamb' to me.

Why so mean?

R0ckandHardPlace · 01/08/2025 12:51

I get you, OP. I went into London yesterday and saw loads of women who looked like they were going to a fancy dress party as Little Bo-Peep.

Actually I see this is trolling. It’s patently untrue and goady and mean spirited.

DeLaRuiz · 01/08/2025 14:43

SulkySeagull · 01/08/2025 11:38

I too am confused about the reference to ME+EM - is that the shop you meant to call out OP? It’s hardly somewhere that’s accessible for the whole country to shop - a dress is over £200!

I think it’s proof it’s a troll post. They don’t actually know what they’re talking about. It’s probably a kid on school holiday annoyed at mummy so being rude about her frock on the internet.

I remember a friend phoning me years back and asking “are you going to wear pants?”. I know what she meant but could have caused confusion. 😀

menopausalfart · 01/08/2025 14:48

I wear trousers regardless of the weather. I only ever wear a dress to a funeral or a wedding. The only time I wear shorts is at the beach. My 12-year-old and all her friends live in shorts even when it's bloody freezing.

Because us women in the UK have no sense of style unlike our super sophisticated and slim European neighbours? We're, pale, fat, polyester clad slobs. I assume that's where you're going with this so let's just cut to the chase.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Love this comment !

I would personally like fewer floral dresses and more solids or stripes in the shops. Would also love to see the death of puff sleeves, tiers, frilly yokes and Little House on the prairie styles. So hard to find a simple cotton dress with no tiers for a reasonable price.

My legs are my best feature even in my 50s so I wear shorts a lot, but not to work.

Yes. I'm nearly 50 and my legs are one bit that doesn't look that different from how they were in my 20s as I go to the gym and I have nice skin which tans easily. Don't think they look too bad without tights on here the other day!

I have a very important question to ask about UK style....
tinytemper66 · 01/08/2025 15:32

And what do you wear so we can judge you?

Tinymrscollings · 01/08/2025 15:32

Yikes. Trod on a nerve there OP 🤣

Post after disingenuous post implying that shorts, a tank and interesting shoes could only possibly mean sawn off jeans, a vest top from the supermarket and a pair of Irregular Choice dolly shoes with dog faces on or something.

A google of how people are wearing shorts gives loads of tailored shorts worn with all manner of sleeveless tank style tops in great fabrics and interesting shoes (mesh pumps, kitten heeled sandals, loafers). Not easy to pull off, and I struggled to find any diversity of body shapes as examples, but that’s beside the point.

Just as there are shorts and a tank (chic edition) and shorts and a tank (gardening edition), there are floral dresses (airy, elegant edition) and floral dresses (polyester sack edition).

The devil’s in the detail, as with all things getting dressed.

There ARE a lot of dreadful floral dresses knocking about. Incoherent colour palettes, busy patterns chosen cause they don’t need matching on the seams and can be stamped out of giant bolts of fabric by a machine with no wastage, cheap fabric and no finishing. Invariably they are constructed to fit everyone and noone, simultaneously. Tonnes of frills, tiers and unnecessary statement sleeves and ruching and pointless ties to distract from/compensate for the fit, construction and fabric.

There are some beautiful ones designed with an eye to the women who will wear them rather than the amount of them they can shift before it starts raining. I’d put Me + Em versions in this category, by and large so it’s interesting the OP chose that brand.

There are people on this thread telling on themselves by getting so out of proportion defensive and mean. I don’t think anyone who is comfortable in their skin and their clothes would be in the slightest bit bothered if someone else thinks that some of the dresses that they enjoy wearing (not their dress specifically) are ugly.

I don’t care if someone doesn’t like the dress I’m wearing. But keep that opinion to yourself. Don’t create a post just to tell a group of people that their dresses are ugly, and then try to pass it off as a joke.

Oh my god, and that's on a slim, beautiful model! The proportions are completely wrong.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 16:07

Many women look good in shorts and a vest. If that's their choice - fine. What is not fine is to be critical of a whole nation of women as the OP did! @Tinymrscollings - you're right, style is very dependent on the actual garments and how they are worn. It varies a lot, plus taste is very subjective!

The white shorts make it look like her bottom half is 3x the size of her top half! Not a good look.

Confabulations · 01/08/2025 13:57

Don't tell anyone about that dress! I only bought it a couple of weeks ago and haven't had a chance to wear it yet! First time I have ever had a maxi dress because most of them swamp me and have far too big a pattern. FF finally achieved the impossible and creates one that flatters a petite person.

I hope it isn't too long for you. I am 5'7" and it is ankle length on me.

Honestly, when I put it on it was a wow moment.

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 16:04

I mean it’s not what I’d choose but my point was more that it’s definitely not dog walking or bathroom cleaning clothes just cause it’s shorts and a tank top. I don’t mind the proportions with the black top and the black sandals but I see what you’re saying. And crucially, I am not distressed or angry.

I confess that I’m failing to understand why the OP saying that a type of dress is ugly is deeply offensive, but it’s absolutely fine for you to be very dismissive about what could have been a photo from my family album of me in my favourite shorts, high heeled flip flops and no bra tank top

ps. It isn’t, sadly 😁

id prefer going back to the days were the internet wasnt around so people got on with there own business and life and kept their judgement to themselves instead of slandering every single thing about peoples choices and having a gang of old women or young women and men commenting on peoples one life choices. people should wear what they want wear a rainbow suit let ur rolls hang out janice we all end up in the same gown or urn. and one day when these people are on their deathbeds maybe they will realise how differently their lives, thoughts, feelings, decisions should of been led instead of caring about strangers choice of life, fashion, choices. its stupid and a ridiculous way of wasting precious time. miserable.

'id prefer going back to the days were the internet wasnt around so people got on with there own business and life and kept their judgement to themselves' (sic) ... Are you actually kidding us?! After your first few posts on this thread??! 🤔

To avoid getting told off by anyone, I’ve just read back what I wrote. I meant the general ‘you’ and used your post to make that point, not you @Cathandkin specifically! Should have been clearer 😬

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 16:22

Tinymrscollings are you suggesting that the majority of older women look like the picture you have posted? Not where I live or travel they don’t. For a start if you wore that top, you would either have to go bra less, or wear a special type of bra, maybe strapless, unless you were happy to have your entire bra straps on display.
I don’t find tight tops cool in hot weather. Neither do I find strapless bras comfortable when it’s hot. Baggy, sleeveless tops need a bra, again unless you have very small breasts which ties into my earlier post of being fit, young and very toned.
I don’t really care what anyone wears unless it’s wildly inappropriate. However, don’t kid yourself that the majority of people who wear shorts and a vest are in some way superior to anyone seen wearing a dress.

Daffodilsarefading · 01/08/2025 16:24

Also I avoid black in hot weather, it attracts the heat.
See also Arab men wearing white, whilst the women are confined to black.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2025 09:06

but either way I personally find oversized dresses (and ones that look like they're made out of sacks) really unflattering

I agree. So many of the independent shops round here sell those one size shapeless linen "Italian look" clothes with huge necklines that really only fit if you are a size 16 or 18. I swerve those.

Do Italians really wear shapeless ill fitting linen?

Edited

I hate the ubiquitous floral dress with puffed sleeves & tiered skirts worn with white veja trainers, denim jackets & cross body bags so beloved by middle aged women.

It's as much a uniform as the breton / skinny jeans / ballet shoes was before it.

I'm middle aged myself, in my 50s. I get it, it's easy to shove on, takes no thought, everywhere in the shops, & everyone else is wearing it so why not....but even so I just hate it as a look

I spend a lot of time in italy & go every year, often more than once due to work.

Over the years I've spent a lot of time people watching. Mainly women as they go about their day & on the whole they dress far better.

I know this will get a huge swathe of mumsnetters protesting but not ALL Italian women are stylish. Or slim. Etc etc and of course they are right.

But...there's still a significant amount who dress stylishly & appropriately for the weather. It helps that they mostly have lovely skin (I'm pale & freckly & envious)

Lots of dresses worn but not the fussy styles worn here. Lots of a-line shift dresses to the knee or midi on older ladies. Plain colours, natural fabrics. Not so many flounces & frills.

Or beautiful belted shirt dresses. In stripes or spots etc

Worn with flat leather sandals not trainers or flip flops etc

What i noticed is that there are far more boutiques & small local shops selling beautiful dresses & skirts & tops inexpensively. Made in Italy.

I've bought dresses, tops, skirts & coats over the years.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2025 16:46

@NonHighStreetClothes I wear floral dresses, but plainly styled ones. I don't own any white trainers, but I do like a denim jacket for the pockets. It saves me from carrying a bag.

I think the problem is that we can't find plain stylish dresses easily, so we buy what is available.

Yes that's partly my point - lovely non fussy clothes are far more readily available in italy, for instance, than the UK. The same with beautiful affordable & suitable leather sandals & shoes & bags etc
