I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Well said @Daffodilsarefading
If I turned up at work in shorts and vest top I too would be sent home to change and have wages deducted for the time I was away from the office.

Also, I would be pretty cold as the aircon would be on.

I suppose the op asked a question and people answered it. They explained why they wore floral dresses in the summer. Some posters then responded saying these posters clothes are ugly and lacked style, unlike them of course. Then the same posters got all pissy when they were told well wearing shorts and a vest wouldn’t work for everyone because of x and y. They also got pissy to be told that shorts and a vest are basic wear.
Nobody appears to be able to answer what the shorts and vest wearers wear for work.
If I turned up for work wearing shorts and a vest, I would be told to get the fuck changed.
Wearing one of the dresses the op spoke about would not cause my boss to have the same reaction.
Maybe that’s a valid reason for wearing such clothing.
Disclaimer: I don’t wear a denim jacket with a floral dress. I have lots of clothes. Lots of dresses, some of which may be floral, many of which are not. At work if I wear a dress it’s currently with wooden block heeled sandals, not trainers.

I don't want to single out individuals but the first two responses were straightforward answers. The pissyness had set in by the third post - and it was with the op, even though the op tried to rescue the situation. And what could have been an interesting discussion about British style went down the pan.

I'm in no position to object to rudeness and grumpyness as I can be rude and grumpy myself. But every week there are threads about how ugly barrel leg jeans are, how wide legs or midi skirts or oversized blazers suit nobody or a generic 'let's all laugh at this hideous outfit' etc etc etc. And yet there are certain outfits that it seems cannot be critiqued without the roof falling in. It's the double standard that riles me,

Divebar2021 · 04/08/2025 10:10

I think there’s plenty of conversation to be had about the difference in fashion between NYC and London (or North America and the U.K.) but if I were to start a conversation with an American about say cowboy boots and say “ I’ve never seen so many ugly boots in my life.” On a largely American forum I wouldn’t expect a “ hey just joking “ to save my arse.

henlake7 · 04/08/2025 11:12

Its funny how often someone says 'I hate X, Y or Z clothing item' and follows that directly with 'they make me look like a twat!'.
erm....its not the clothes fault it doesnt suit you. X, Y and Z might look awesome on somebody else.

Very rarely have I seen something that wouldnt suit anybody (9 times out of 10 those things are very high end runway fashion).

Exactly. I'm not a fan of barrel leg trousers because they don't suit me, but they look great on my 25 year old DD.

I suit dresses that have a floral pattern, so I wear them.

I’m just glad she’s come back to tell us what people with self respect wear.

I like a floral dress but I also like leopard print and wide legged trousers so I guess I don’t entirely lack self respect which is a reassuring way to start the week.

What a relief. I'm clinging on to my wide leg trousers as a last vestige of self respect.

Sellenis · 04/08/2025 12:17

Heee! Do we think self-respect is actually contained WITHIN particular garments, like a moisture wicking layer or bra shelf?

I quite like the idea of buying trousers with self respect sewn in. Practical, comfortable, and life affirming: the new self respect line from Marks and Spencers will flatter your silhouette and your career choices. Busy mums can get two jobs done in one.

ThatCyanCat · 04/08/2025 12:24

I might think someone was lacking in self respect if their clothes were very dirty and shabby and badly fitting and so on, although I realise there could be other reasons.

I'd feel pretty egotistical if I thought they must have no self respect purely because they're wearing a dress that I wouldn't choose.

OTOH, I always thought that floral dresses were a pretty safe bet, not everyone's thing maybe but inoffensive and anodyne. Had no idea they sparked such strong reactions and character judgements in people. Seems they're pretty rebellious!

I’d buy self respect trousers. I’d swish around in them in a self congratulatory fashion.

I'm sold! Especially if they tell me how fabulous I am several times a day. Here, take my money 💰💰💰

As a spanish middle age woman, I have been reading the thread with interest. Let me tell you, not all spanish woman are stylish, and frankly there is a bit of conformity in our fashion. People are afraid of getting outside the norm and that is something to admire from British style. You are not afraid to take risks.

And yes, the dress+trainers combo is for sure a trend here. I live in Madrid and probably come across dozens of women wearing that look on an everyday basis. Is an easy way to look well put together (not many women wear heels after covid). Not with denim jackets but simply because in spanish weather you do not get much use of them, and in high summer you swap the trainers for sandals.

It is true we are not as fond as florals as you, but the cottagecore trend came here for sure (personally I adore them, and I have been stocking up because five years ago you could not find a floral dress here).

I AM ENGLISH!!! This entire thread was always meant as an observation how much the country has changed since I left and then this massive influx of dresses that I personally don't really get. I just don't think I phrased it very well. Although if we want to discuss my cowboy boots, I'm fully in for that!

I love a cowboy boot!
Especially with a floral dress

It’s a great combination

You still can't see it - there was nothing funny about your post. You come across as pompous, self important and condescending. And pretty unobservant if you think women in the UK wearing dresses in the summer is something new.

I suppose I "personally don't get" why anyone would choose an outfit as boring as shorts and a tank , and I "personally" think fake tan is naff.

Fake tan is as good as a fake orgasm!

Nah, an observation would be gosh how interesting to see how popular floral dresses are in the UK compared to a vest and shorts combo in the US. It might involve asking what the inspiration for such a big trend was. Calling said dresses ugly and the women who wear them brainwashed was goady and nasty.
Own your judgeyness!

Gettingbysomehow · 06/08/2025 15:19

I don't impose anything on anyone else, I have simply expressed that I don't like flowery dresses. There are some incredibly ugly ones in the shops right now. Im sure there are some lovely ones too. If a friend turned up in one no matter how ugly it was I'd say nothing because it's none of my business what they choose to wear. I can't help thinking that you are being nasty for the heck of it. Do you get a thrill out of it? Im too old to be bullied, I have enough life experience to not give a shit.
I knew you only wanted to know what I wear so you could tear it to pieces which is exactly what you did.
Go and lie down for a bit and calm down. Nobody likes a spiteful woman.

Not a flowery dress for sure. They look horrible on people my age. Only the young can really rock a flowery dress.

I have no problem saying flowery dresses are hideous and people who wear them have zero style or self respect.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 06/08/2025 16:39

And you think that saying someone who wears a floral dress ‘has no self respect’ is what? Kind?
You’re right, no one does like a spiteful woman.

Fizbosshoes · 06/08/2025 17:09

I'm a middle aged woman and multiple friends complimented me on my flowery dress recently. (We are probably all very unfashionable with not a grain of self respect between us! 😄) I wasn't wearing it with a denim.jacket or trainers if that makes any difference! I'm barely ever complimented (not that I expect to be!) when I wear a tshirt or vest with shorts

CalmBlueCritic · 06/08/2025 19:51

Wow. I also think there are a lot of rather ugly floral frocks around, OP! Never seen so many!
I appreciate your sense of humour, too.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/08/2025 20:13

I don’t know where you live @CalmBlueCritic but I haven’t seen a single one where I live this summer. Not a single one 🤷‍♀️ And trust me I’ve been looking

SomeOfTheTrouble · 06/08/2025 20:29

I’ve been keeping my eye out since reading this thread and haven’t seen any so far.

You literally said women that wear flowery dresses have no sense of style or self respect…pot meet kettle.
