I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Obviously we just don’t think they’re ugly. We think they’re pretty and classy and we enjoy them being cooler in the heat.

What would you rather people wear?

MissBattleaxe · 31/07/2025 23:51

I like flowery dresses and there's a heat wave so they are just right. I don't see the problem.

Mewling · 31/07/2025 23:52

Tongue in cheek aye? Just goady to be honest. Don’t like it, don’t wear it yourself innit.

Peclet · 31/07/2025 23:53

Not a trend where I am.

the floaty dress, Birkenstocks/white trainers and a denim jacket is quite dated but also a great throw on smarter look.

Where what you like and try and loosen your judgey pants.

FfaCoff · 31/07/2025 23:54

Because us women in the UK have no sense of style unlike our super sophisticated and slim European neighbours? We're, pale, fat, polyester clad slobs. I assume that's where you're going with this so let's just cut to the chase.

No! I didn't mean to be goady! My tone was obviously funnier in my head. It just genuinely blew my mind as I've never seen so many dresses in my life everywhere I went and that includes loads of parts of London and the SE and in the North. It was just REALLY noticeable compared to all the other years I've come home.

Admittedly, the use of ugly dresses was way funnier in my head....

FWIW I’m a jeans sort of girl so I’ve no skin in this game, but just curious as to what you wear when you’re travelling extensively across the UK?

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 01/08/2025 00:03

The dresses thing has been going on for ages

It’s cool and summery innit

LittlePineapple · 01/08/2025 00:09

I love be flowery dresses and love being our seeing lots of others in pretty dresses. Genuinely gives me a bit of happy seeing so much pretty!

sunsetbridges · 01/08/2025 00:10

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

Hmmm I’m kind of intrigued by the reference to Me & Em. I wouldn’t have pointed to that brand as a particular market leader particularly. I’m not into dresses that much myself but I don’t hate them . What do you think we should all wear wearing instead then OP. Perhaps you could post some inspiration pics for us.

Dated already, it only became a sing about two or three years ago.

Wonder if the opp would rather, we were all in jeans and t shirts.

latetothefisting · 01/08/2025 00:20

To slightly misquote miranda priestly
"Florals....in summer....ground breaking."

But really op - a dress is very popular summer wear for women and girls
Florals are probably the most common print/pattern out there

thus the prevalence of flowery dresses in summer is hardly surprising!

It has been a "look" for the last few centuries at least so doubt it's going anywhere....

HotCrossBunplease · 01/08/2025 00:26

Where are you that is bereft of women who wear dresses?

Also, you have clearly been away from the UK for a very very long time as you have forgotten that we don’t say “tank” here when we mean vest top.

A tank is a knitted sleeveless jumper worn over a shirt.

Going off this I’m going to guess…American or German and you couple them with those ugly walking boot style sandals with the elastic cord things… You can’t be French as they all claim to swan about in channel with perfect skin that they don’t use anything but water on (literally the biggest lie ever as they’d all look like raccoons with mascara streaked faces). Spanish and Italian women wear dresses often, although I don’t know how drawn the are to floral patterns… I won’t go on but as we’re judging on random garments yes, my guess is American or German

edited to note that clearly I’m an uncouth British lass as my phone autocorrected Chanel to channel. Probably thinks I wanted to say channel tunnel..don’t know why - the furthest I’ve ever got is Butlins in my floral dress.

Well I look like a bloke in shorts, any shorts, so they’re a no from me.
Give me an ugly dress in this heat over shorts any day.

There's no such thing as a good fake tan.

Mumblechum0 · 01/08/2025 00:37

I only wear shorts in the garden as I’m over 60 and no one needs to see my veins. Same for vests and my intoned arms.

shorts and vest tops are ok for the beach/grden but not something you could wear to work for example

i literally want to know! I genuinely think the shorts tank top thing sounds like the outfits my American and German friends wear and they always say they’re wearing smart shoes but they’re wearing those hiking sandals which I just can’t deal with. Just a cultural thing I guess - it’s funny how country based fashion still is and how you can think something looks bad (like how I feel about the sandals) but if you lived somewhere else you might covet the same thing. (Although you must see why you’re getting pisstake responses?!)

Errr, yes there is. It's called not trying to go from blue mottled skin to Italian brown and just giving your legs a little love.
