I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

More than an eyebrow would be raised if I rocked up to to work in shorts and a 'tank'.

Blancheyo · 01/08/2025 08:01

Like, I imagine, many women I don't have the legs for shorts. If you have heavy legs in comparison to the rest of your body, a dress is more flattering. I struggle to even get shorts that fit my thighs, whereas I wear size 8 dresses no problem.

Matronic6 · 01/08/2025 08:05

I own a few floral midis myself and mostly wear them as easy work wear. I don't think they are a trend anymore, they have just become a staple. There are some ugly prints though.

But I need to comment on the irony of someone, even jokingly, judging people for wearing floral dresses when their staple is shorts and a tank... Glass houses and all that.

miraxxx · 01/08/2025 08:06

I grew up in Singapore and wearing shorts and tanks is pretty much a uniform for teens and young women. That's what I wore most of the time in my twenties, though I am too old for it now. However that style combo is very casual and not appropriate for every situation, even with smart shorts. A short cotton dress or skirt will take you everywhere. The last few years have seen a fad for pretty voluminous maxi/midi dresses but not everyone likes to be swamped in those dresses. The Me+Em dresses I saw online are pretty - I would wear them.
NYers are not wearing anything too different.

The reason is fell flat is because it’s rude. Why criticise women just out for the day, trying to dress nice and feel cool in the heat. By all means wear whatever you want and most polite people wouldn’t judge. But don’t pretend Americans are better dressed!

IFinishedTheBiscuits · 01/08/2025 08:08

Well I kind of agree. I vaguely remember summer dresses being a big thing for British women in the 80s, then the 90s was more leggings and less formal.

For the last few years summer dresses have become really popular again but much more covered up. I thought I was in the modesty clothes section of the M&S website a couple of years ago. All of the dresses were Little House on the Prairie type or long sleeved tunic type - eventually I realised it was just the fashion.

Having said that I would rather see sensible dresses than flesh coloured cycle shorts and have that initial shock of thinking a stranger is naked from the waist down in public.

Blinky21 · 01/08/2025 08:08

Floral dresses have been popular since the 90s but have had a bigger comeback recently. I think they can look really good but I am not a fan of the puff sleeve trend that won't seem to die off. I wouldn't associated Me & Em with the look the OP is referring to

CremeBruhlee · 01/08/2025 08:10

Ooh this would not be appropriate summer wear in our office. No shorts, vests of flip flops. You will find that summer dresses in a thin material are obvious summer work wear and long means you don’t have to wear tights or tan legs. I wouldn’t wear a short dress without tights in a work situation I’m afraid and wouldn’t ever have no matter what level of seniority and I’m not that old x

ThatCyanCat · 01/08/2025 08:11

It's the current summer fashion. I'm sitting it out, I'm an exaggerated hourglass and it makes me look like a parachute. I don't think it'll be in next summer. It's the current cold shoulder top. Autumn and winter styles seem to last longer, summer changes every year.

Floral midi dresses have been in fashion in the summer in the U.K. for years now

As in leaving the house for any reason other than dog walking or maybe nipping to the village shop.

That's extreme though. You can be annoyed about the OP, but saying that wearing shorts or tank tops = scruffy and not something you would wear outside the house does not show any particular style credentials. It's just weird 😆

I live in NY! There are seriously nowhere near the amount of women wearing dresses, except on a Sunday, here as there are there. It blew my mind because everyone was so hot and bothered and complaining they were hot and bothered and I was just like, "So why are you all wearing such long bloody dresses?!!"

They’re hot and bothered because if our climate which goes from 20 to 30 in a matters of days without anyone being able to acclimatise.

Wearing shorts instead of a floaty dress isn’t going to change that.

VineandIvy · 01/08/2025 08:16

Currently pale and pregnant with HG. Floaty floral dresses and sandals/trainers are all I have right now OP. I don’t have the waistline for shorts and tank tops. And I can’t bend over to tan myself.

it’s enough of a crisis I had to remove my extensions and need to pick some sort of permanent muted hair tone now, as won’t have time for the maintainence required for my previous style, don’t you dare come for my dresses 😢

Brownbearwhitebear · 01/08/2025 07:17

I want to know what constitutes ‘great’ shoes because I can’t think of anything that goes with shorts that would fit that description.

So funny-I kept wondering that myself.

I think it's all relative because OP also references "good fake tan" which really doesn't exist...

bindin · 01/08/2025 08:17

Dont get me wrong, I own shorts like these, I own tank tops like these……I don’t go out wearing them though

I wouldn't wear that outfit at home but not all tank tops and shorts are the same...

I like flowery dresses and there's a heat wave so they are just right. I don't see the problem.

What heatwave? It has been significantly cooler these last couple of weeks and it has been warm rather than hot. I have been back in jeans this week.

Matildahoney · 01/08/2025 08:18

To me shorts and a tank makes me feel like I'm a tourist/on holiday
Plus dresses suit me far more than separates, and I struggle to find tops I like!

BUMCHEESE · 01/08/2025 08:23

The floral maxi is a bit overdone now IMO but was very in a few years back so lots of people bought them and still wear them.

They are very easy to wear, loose, cover up any bits you might want to cover, and don't require fake tan. Chuck them on and you're ready to go.

Personally I don't wear florals but I do have quite a few longer, simple linen dresses I wear in summer. When it's above 25 degrees shorts give you a sweaty waist.

bindin · 01/08/2025 08:24

I want to know what constitutes ‘great’ shoes because I can’t think of anything that goes with shorts that would fit that description.

For me it depends on the shorts. I only really wear loose denim worse or flared smarter ones. Ballets can look nice with denim depending on the cut & length. Sandals go with most shorts and obviously you can have very casual sandals or smarter ones.

I’d be more concerned that your daughter feels free to engage in such misogynistic and ageist insults.

Not really getting older is a part of life. I quite enjoy the banter I get from my daughter. You see my daughter's jealous of how youthful I look and she has to get to my age. I don't take myself seriously and flowery dresses are hideous. If you like them good for you you wear them.

lljkk · 01/08/2025 08:27

Newsflash: wear what you like. Be glad you can wear what you like.
Be glad others are happy in their own clothes.
Not everyone dresses to impress YOU.

Sounds like your daughter needs to learn some manners

It's ok to have a sense of humour and getting older is a fact of life. When I die she plans on eating my ashes. I have decided to give my other daughter the responsibility of looking after my ashes. I don't think I will taste that good.

Absolutely. I've never dressed to conform to someone else's ideas.

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

You do you hun. ✌️
