I have a very important question to ask about UK style....

What is with all the dresses?!! Especially the flowery ones. I've just got home from 6 weeks back in the UK and I've never seen so many women in ugly dresses in my life! Is it just because they're cooler in the heat or has Me+Em just brainwashed the entire country?

This is meant pretty tongue in cheek before everyone starts coming at me with their pitchforks...which they're entirely dressed appropriately for! 😂

Also, I’m not allowed to wear shorts and vest tops to work, so midi dresses it is when it’s hot. Maybe a lot of people you saw were going to work?

Cathandkin · 01/08/2025 07:28

Good points, @Divebar2021 , I do think that there's diversity of style in the UK, and people aren't afraid to be a bit different or alternative. I like it!

Yes, that was my thought. She had 6 weeks off work, not every woman has.

They do look hideous and old fashioned. I wouldn't be caught in a flowery dress. My daughter will go from calling me an old hag to an old granny.

She sounds really rude and unpleasant.

TimeForATerf · 01/08/2025 07:30

I knew you lived in the US when you said “tank”, shudders.

Give me a floral, long dress in the heat over a pair of hideous tailored shorts and a VEST top, not forgetting a ginormous water bottle as an accessory.

Fizbosshoes · 01/08/2025 07:32

I went to DDs year 11 leavers assembly 3 years ago, and I had a long floral dress (it wasn't ugly imo!!) a denim jacket and white pumps. I said to DH , this is practically a uniform, I bet most other women will be wearing a similar combo, and at least half were! I mostly wear tshirt and shorts, in summer, but i do have 3 floral dresses, 1 spotted one, and 1 pattern. None are ugly though! 😄

LadyAsnowt · 01/08/2025 07:32

I'm well over 50 and overweight. I wouldn't be seen dead in shorts. I wear maxi dresses, but it does annoy me that they all seem to be either white (not a good look on a fat, pale, older woman) or floral/patterned. I'd like some nice, wrap-around dresses in solid colours that I can jazz up with costume jewellery.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/08/2025 07:33

For the purposes of science, I have looked in my dress wardrobe (yes I have a dress - and jumpsuit - wardrobe. What of it?) and it has not one single floral dress in.

I will however be wearing a dress today op. Probably with trainers because rain. Shoot me.

I wouldn’t dream of wearing shorts and a “tank” to the office even though I could (I’m the boss, no dress code) because it’s too casual and / or sweaty.

BreatheAndFocus · 01/08/2025 07:33

I love the tank top, shorts and “great shoes” 😂 I very much doubt that everyone will think they’re “great”. Your outfit doesn’t sound any cooler (in a temperature sense) than a dress. In fact, shorts always make me hot due to the waistband and amount of material around one’s nether regions. Yuk!

And I just knew you were going to say you lived in the US 🤣 That icon of fashion!

BreakfastOfWaffles · 01/08/2025 07:34

One of my favourite things about the British summer is getting out my floral dresses, and seeing other women out in theirs. I love the vibrant colours and the floatiness of a summer dress. Personally, I never wear shorts because I don't think they flatter me and I find them hotter than a dresss.

hexsnidgett · 01/08/2025 07:38

I live in hope that flowery dresses are on the way out. Young people don't seem to wear them.
I never wear dresses of any kind, but the fashion for puff sleeves and flounces has crossed over to tops and I find it difficult to buy anything unless it's flouncy, a t-shirt or an oversized shirt.

Blueyshift · 01/08/2025 07:39

Never heard of Me and Em. Thanks op off to look at some nice dresses.

SpandauValet · 01/08/2025 07:41

@EconomyClassRockstar please can we see your “great shoes”?!

And long may it stay that way!

Tumblingthrough · 01/08/2025 07:43

I think vest and shorts is a dated look and not suitable for anything other than beach, garden or a walk. I wouldn’t consider wearing that into the town or city. Potentially, I may wear shorts but with a linen shirt.

Floral dresses are great, although I avoid with white trainers and denim jackets. They’re a cool option and certainly look better than faded leggings.

Obviously there will be a difference between what people wear here and in NY, most places in NY also have aircon.

GrumpyExpat · 01/08/2025 07:45

I hate shorts, I always have, and never wear them. They are unflattering on most women. I wear dresses all summer, in all sorts of prints and solid colors.

In the heat, exactly what I wear at home. Shorts and a tank. Smart shorts and a smart tank. Basically, as little as possible, a good fake tan and great shoes!

Not sure there's any such thing as a good fake tan!

Honeysucklelane · 01/08/2025 07:46

We are largely governed by what is available to us in the shops / online for summer. Floaty floral dresses and white pumps is an affordable, cool, comfortable and flattering look for many women. The more sophisticated pure cotton and linen items people might wear in Europe tend to be too expensive here.

What should we be wearing that’s practical
and stylish @EconomyClassRockstar ? I’m sure most of us would welcome some ideas and outfit suggestions that are more classy.

Trentdarkmore · 01/08/2025 07:47

I don't wear shorts and a vest top because

  1. I feel too fat
  2. Whatever size I were, I would be uncomfortable exposing that much flesh, and worried about burning.

I hate both the heat and florals, so tend to stay at home in a shroud and walking boots.

Why expose skin to the heat to be essentially cooked? Surely, it's better to wear long floaty dresses in natural fabrics to circulate air & keep your skin covered & cool? Like nomads in the dessert who wear long white cotton robes to protect their skin & keep cool.

'Women wear dresses in summer shocker'

Really? You are surprised become some women wear dresses? or that some of these dresses happen to have flower patterns?

They are a good choice for a summer and comfortable.

Much better than tight clothing.

And maybe you have not noticed but women and girls have been wearing dresses for a few centuries...

I live in a seaside town and I see a real variety of clothing being worn in summer. Not just dresses. Many women also wear shorts, loose pants, skirts...

ChompandaGrazia · 01/08/2025 07:51

EconomyClassRockstar · 01/08/2025 00:33

WTF?!

Jesus Christ, remind me never to attempt a joke on MN again.

Well it wasn’t a funny joke was it. It isn’t a joke to come on here and tell everyone they are wearing ugly dresses. Don’t turn up and slag everyone off and expect no response.
I love a floral dress. Shorts and a t shirt with fake tan sounds dull to me.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 01/08/2025 07:52

I have lived in the UK and NYC for equal amounts of time and the style is really similar. I would say dresses might be more of a popular staple in the UK but not wildly out of place in NYC either.

Still confused about your joke...simply calling something ugly isn't a joke. Or is this the famous American sense of humour?

mamagogo1 · 01/08/2025 07:52

There’s some pretty ugly sack like dresses being warn this year, you aren’t wrong op! Unfortunately tailoring is something we seemed to have shunned of late (look at suggestions for wedding attire on this board, sack like is my only description ) but to eaches own. Whenever I’m in southern Europe they manage heat with so much more style
