Back from royal deeside. Had a lovely time. Mar lodge is lovely if you ever fancy a self catering break. There are 5 apartments there now. Very little information in the lodge about its royal history. The current lodge (the 3rd on this site) was build in 1895 by Duke of Fife and his wife the princess Royal. She (Louise) is the 3rd child of Edward VII and brother of George V and sister to Queen Maud of Norway. What things the lodge must have seen. I’ve attached a few pictures. Including of the very freaky stag ballroom (over 2000 skull and antlers)there were a lot of stag heads mounted everywhere in the lodge. Young DNs were quite freaked out!

also visited Balmoral. Just the gardens, but they were lovely!

sorry. No royal fashion

A bit too much taxidermy for my liking, and stag ballroom will give me nightmares!

eggandonion · 25/07/2025 23:48

Certainly a lot of skull and antler decor!

Vogue retrospective of Diana's summer looks. I like her pink gingham trousers and the lemon yellow jumpsuit. Some of the looks would work well today, and obviously haven't dated as much as some of her formal wear.

25 Times Princess Diana Was a Poster Girl for Summer

Nobody did warm-weather dressing quite like Diana.

Sad to think that a few months after that photo was taken, she was dead.

She really came into her own style-wise towards the end of her life - the Chanel suits, cocktail dresses and sleeker hairstyle.

Maireas · 26/07/2025 10:36

Yes, it's very poignant. She did seem to find her own style, and went for shorter hair and the sleeker image.

I loved her cocktail dresses phase. I have said before that I think Kate would look fab in that style

Yebbut Diana was sexy and single. Catherine is welded to the crown and wary of being seen as such. I've seen nuns with shorter hemlines.

Sidebeforeself · 26/07/2025 15:29

@justasking111 I think times have changed though . Kate has worn some “revealing” stuff in the past although probably not since she became POW. There’s really no need for her to swerve looking more “sexy”( thats not the right word for what I mean but I cant think of one better!). I mean we’ve survived divorces, Megxit, Andrew scandals so Kates hemlines shouldn’t raise an eyebrow!.

WhistlingStraits · 26/07/2025 17:00

I’d love to have seen what Diana would have worn as she got into her style groove. She had just started to dress well, and had ditched the awful flicky hair do that she’d been so welded to for years.

No point comparing her to Kate as Diana seemed to love fashion and Kate clearly doesn’t.

Maireas · 26/07/2025 17:06

Also, they're two very different women in different eras.

Comparing Kate and Diana is so unfair.

Diana was divorced at 35 and separated before that. She was always very fashionable and papped everywhere she went.
Thankfully Kate doesn't get that!
The whole Diana story makes me sad still, but I don't think she would have been an ideal MiL, and William and Harry may have had very different lives and perhaps married totally different people had Diana been alive.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/07/2025 17:41

Looking at those photos of Diana I can see why Wills and Haz had her wearing a skirt with belt for that awful statue in Kensington Palace. I hadn’t realise how many of her outfits were belted.

HonoriaBulstrode · 26/07/2025 18:19

Diana was divorced at 35 and separated before that.

Whereas Catherine was having her children in her early-mid thirties. Being a style icon probably wasn't her priority at that time.

I’ve been utterly consumed with the NHS Fife mega thread so haven’t had the chance to keep up with my usual RS&B news.

Cam's hair is looking nice.

Maireas · 27/07/2025 08:35

Thanks for that, @FabulousPharmacyst , I'd never heard of that podcast in before.
That's an interesting collection, @justasking111 , I haven't seen that collection before, nor heard of Lady Cory.

Camilla in a trusty shade and cut of dress, but it's slightly longer, and some striped detail at the hem. She has some great hats.

Seems familiar. Has it been reworked from an earlier design

Choux · 27/07/2025 12:17

Camilla wears the notch neck dress with no defined waist shape often. And she often wears cream or white or blue. She mixes things up a bit with embroidery trim or inlays of other fabric but it’s basically the same dress.

She also wears that big Philip Treacy hat shape with the angled crown a lot. She wore it in green for the Macrons and Ascot this year and in cobalt for Ascot last year. She has multiple cream / white versions with various ribbons, feathers or flowers added as well as this plain cream version.

I guess most of us stick to what we know and what we like and feel comfortable in style wise. But at least QE2 wore the whole rainbow of colour. Camilla’s palette seems quite limited.

Maireas · 27/07/2025 12:19

I think Camilla is very blonde and fair skinned, perhaps she favours pastels because of this. I've seen her in a stronger green, but rarely primary colours.

OP posts:
WhistlingStraits · 27/07/2025 12:38

I think Camilla dresses extremely well for her shape. She’s found a style and colour palette that suits her and mostly sticks to it. She’s found looks amazing in creams, so I’m not surprised she favours this colour.

I know the old queen wore brights so she could be seen, but they were almost always hideous.
