So, I have found a dress, a FABULOUS dress for my MOB outfit.
Only its Black, black with pearls, its gorgeous.
DD LOVES it and says yes go for it, totally the vibe of the wedding, so glam, so my style/type of dress i like to wear only fancied up a bit.
I said, but black, is that ok? DD say yes its her wedding, she says yes so thats that in her mind.
But im a bit, i dunno, is black strange?

or is that a load of shite.

Red shoes, dramatic make up, it’ll be amazing. And the only person whose opinion matters is your daughter.

I saw that, but they have that brand in a dept store in my city, so im going to go in there and suss it out. Its a high end store so maybe they might order it in for me.

Make sure you get your 10% discount by signing uponline - think you could use it in store.

Not sure that a black hat would work with a strapless black dress - especially as the dress is evening type material?

I dont think I would directly copy the BM dresses colour but maybe in the same palatte? Or you could consider silver shoes and accessories - they could work well with the pearls. Do you need a jacket or wrap for parts of the day?

not a hat but a huge silk flower in burgundy at the neckline

GellerYeller · 05/06/2025 20:29

Love this and sounds completely in keeping with the style of the wedding.
I am even more on board with the Joan Collins scenario.
Be fabulous and have fun(and please let us see pics after the event😊).

TimeForRest · 05/06/2025 20:37

Fabulous!

I wouldn't wear accessories that clash with the BM’s, so not yellow, but pearls and maybe a peep of mulberry shoe.

Sounds a stunning wedding and your dress fits the occasion perfectly.

There is a move to MOB/MOG wearing more evening style attire, the case for a long time in the US.

Gorgeous ‘pearl’ shoe.Available in mulberry and various colours.

Or treat yourself available in garnet.

I think it’s gorgeous. I have been to a summer wedding were the MOB wore full length black and ivory and she looked fabulous. Go for it!

It’s black but not in any way funeral. It’s very clearly a black tie, classy elegant celebration dress. Get it !

neilyoungismyhero · 05/06/2025 21:00

A friend of ours wore a black and white wedding dress and she was the most fabulous bride I've ever seen. If your daughter approves it's a no brainer surely.

The wedding is not goth but think lots of candles, phantom of the opera style flowers, tudoresque wedding dress, banquet tables kind of set up.
Church is v v v old england.
Ok i think it would work and DD loves it. Ill check in my dept store tmro.

Sounds perfect for this and maybe the first MOB dress on here I’ve liked!!

I would steer very well clear of pp suggestions to add bright colours (see also: pashmina, ha!). Honestly I think that would just cheapen it and yellow and black don’t really go.. maybe burgundy shoes as you suggested or ivory/metallic and the headpiece posted above was lovely. Overall I think if you keep it quite simple it could be very classy.

I specifically told people to wear black if they wanted to at my wedding. I didn't want it to cost them money and everyone has a black dress that they love. So a lot of my guests were in fabulous black evening dresses. You love it and your DD loves it and personally, I love the evening dress look. The traditional skirt suit and hat is not for me!

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/06/2025 21:06

Since the bride is happy with it, go ahead! (Assume the groom doesn’t give a monkeys or is also happy with it).

Personally I think a black evening style strapless gown (and it’s a gown rather than a dress) is completely inappropriate for an English wedding (especially a church wedding) but if the bride’s fine, then it’s not an issue. Traditionally you should cover your shoulders in church but maybe you’re not religious at all and people obviously have different ideas. I’ve been to a few catholic weddings in the US where I’ve been gobsmacked at the dresses some people wore to the church service. But we’re all different and life would be very boring if we all thought the same.

Thepossibility · 05/06/2025 21:10

The only colour that it out of bounds is white these days in my opinion.
But the only opinion that really matters is the bride's. Enjoy your dress!

I am a young mum sure if anyone asks i was a child bride

If you were 16 and your daughter is 19 so age 35, yes that’s a young mum and it would look great for a different occasion. At 55 for your daughter’s wedding it’s really not appropriate at all.

Tryingmomma32 · 05/06/2025 21:29

Gorgeous dress you will look incredible! Sounds like it very fitting for the style of the wedding.

Angrymum22 · 05/06/2025 21:29

A big chiffon wrap, shrug or cardigan to cover your shoulders in whatever colour you choose to accessorise would be useful if it’s starting to get a bit chilly. If you buy one in black you could add some pearls to match the dress.

@Doteycat The dress is stunning - sounds like it will fit the vibe of the day beautifully.

I haven't RTFT so apologies if it's already been mentioned but as your look is going to be very different to a normal MOB, I think it's only fair to let the groom's Mum know.

Its not an English wedding. Its just in england.
I will have my shoulders covered, because I want to but im not a bit religious.
The remit is gown, all the bridal party are in long and the guests have been requested to be in formal/long. The grooms best man etc will be in uniform.

Sorry I don’t like it for a wedding.

Goditsmemargaret · 05/06/2025 21:53

It is stunning. I want it. I'd go minimal with the accessories, a loose bun and red lipstick.
