Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress

Inspired by the other thread…

I love, love, love a maxi dress in the summer (not floral, I prefer plain). But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

A blazer sometimes feels a bit too formal with a casual dress. I have tried a cropped quilted jacket which worked okay with one of my dresses. Utility jacket? I do love a utility jacket and have quite a few. A fitted but casual cropped jacket looked good with one of them, but mine is to be honest a bit too small, had it a long time. Any other ideas or photos for inspiration?

@kingprawnspaghetti i like that jacket but can’t see the green one. However, on my perusal, it linked to this jacket, which comes in a couple of colours.

I like the look of that, it has Sezane vibes. But I’ll never buy air yarn from M&S again, The air yarn jumper I bought from there looked like a dish rag after about five seconds of wear. Also, it’s just impossible to buy anything from M&S at the moment. I live quite close to a massive one and the stock control for sizes is dreadful. I do have a cotton knitted zip up bomber jacket from M&S though that I’ve had a while. Might try that. Thanks

I do like that one, but it’s quite similar to a few jackets I have so maybe I just need to try those ones.

I've noticed quite a few people in patterned short quilted jackets recently. They look really good. Sort of like this Boden one although maybe that's slightly too bright for me. But that style.

I have several of these,fantastic quality and stretchy so really comfortable.

I like a leather jacket with a maxi. Mix of girlie and tough, lol. That Whistles jacket is lovely too. If it’s warm, I chuck a little cardigan in my bag.

I wear my denim jacket. I have blue denim.. khaki denim.. pink denim .. red denim.. cream/ beige denim.
Wear what the hell you like.

OP, your dilemma is also my perennial problem. Love maxi dresses in summer but don't know what to throw over it if it gets chilly. The problem is that the shopping sites don't tend to style jackets over dresses, mostly trousers. It is hard to get ideas so following your thread with interest.

I have this boxy jacket, which is a suede-like but is light weight and silky/velvety and falls beautifully. I gather you have variations on this theme already.

I am basically looking for a more up-to-date replacement for a cardigan or a bolero. Would prefer a cropped style as I have a short body.

Interesting fabric Bengaline. I like the style but wish the jacket was more cropped.

I think a denim jacket is more a classic item; I think with the right cut and styling, the maxi dress-denim jacket combo still works. I do hope so because that is what I am wearing today.

I've got a light cotton bomber jacket in cream/ beige that I found in tkmaxx. I only bought it on a whim but have worn it loads. The label says Nicole Miller.

I really like the brown suede jacket but I am out of my depth. I'd been eyeing up this zebra print dress after I saw it on another thread, and I'm obsessed with coral accessories anyway so I thought some coral and that dress would look great. But then... a brown jacket?
I feel like I'm trying to do colour maths in my head somehow. What does brown go with? Wouldn't it be quite limited?

It was the wording I found amusing. 'We can't wear...'. Of course we can though individuals may choose not to. The whole point of fashion is that it's fluid and individual, it's not about rigid rules about what people 'can' and 'can't' wear.
