Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress

Inspired by the other thread…

I love, love, love a maxi dress in the summer (not floral, I prefer plain). But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

A blazer sometimes feels a bit too formal with a casual dress. I have tried a cropped quilted jacket which worked okay with one of my dresses. Utility jacket? I do love a utility jacket and have quite a few. A fitted but casual cropped jacket looked good with one of them, but mine is to be honest a bit too small, had it a long time. Any other ideas or photos for inspiration?

@greengreyblue it’s the best bits of a denim jacket but in a lighter fabric plus I wear jeans a lot and don’t do double denim!

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 23:03

It's no wonder I don't look very current. I don't like any of the jacket styles linked on this thread 😕

OurDoorz · 02/06/2025 07:04

I've been eyeing up that Uniqlo jacket in green also.

I think a lot of what's in or out depends on whether you're in London or elsewhere. Where I live (non-London) denim jackets still seem popular among well dressed women (although not among the very most trendy ones, but theyre few and far between and probably just got off the train from London).

I like a knitted jumper over maxi skirts and dresses. Something like these.

Oooo. Particularly love that brown one with the check. Gorgeous!

OP doesn't want everyone's views on bloody denim jackets!! Please can we just move on!

Absolutely not, OP was informed by ‘someone’ denim is out - how ridiculous is that?

Thats the point - she’s only asking because she’s banned (herself) from denim!

There are loads of stretch denim jackets that are ultra soft - like Jules jackets and don’t feel like cold denim.

Don’t worry about me. I’m not chucking out my denim jacket any time soon. I still love it and it’ll still be a part of my wardrobe. In fact, having been reminded that it’s in my wardrobe, I might give it a go with some cargo trousers and a T shirt today. Or maybe even a denim shirt. But, like many people (see the denim jacket thread for examples) I’m completely bored by the whole maxi summer dress with white trainers and a denim jacket look. They’ll prise my maxi dresses out of my cold dead hands so I’m just after a way to freshen it up. And if I can’t discuss that in Style & Beauty then something’s gone a bit awry somewhere.

I’ve got this https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/320483399]]" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/320483399]] slightly oversize one from Tesco, which is a bit retro so looks good with the current style.

Outofthepan · 02/06/2025 07:32

I messed that up 🙈 So here’s a picture of it

But you can get coloured denim. I agree and have something similar but I think the anti denim thing is more about that jacket, maxi, white trainer has been so over done. It’s a good look but has become passé.

narniabusiness · 02/06/2025 07:37

I’ve been wearing this over my maxi dresses. The colour way I bought has been discontinued but there are many different ones. I like the crochet detail, but they also make it without. As it’s knitted it’s not to heavy to carry around if (hopefully) the sun decides to come out.

I have this one in suedette - it seems to go with everything.
The only problem it's M&S.
I'm also praising the Uniqlo jersey jackets. I have the beige & the olive & they drape beautifully.

Good news!!!

I have so many in so many different colours.

I still had mine from teen years and it brings me joy when DD wears it.

(Just had a text from royal
mail my new one is being delivered today!)

zenae · 02/06/2025 09:53

Not exactly, although I have those in every colour on the planet also, very versatile particularly on warm hols.

What I use over midi and maxi dresses HERE in a cooler climate 😊is something like this in the link, although the one I have is lovely soft non crease fabric, long sleeves that I roll up, and it's long enough (to hips) to tie in a knot at the waist if I want. I love it and am sorry I didn't buy more at the time!

Probably old fashioned and so not on trend, but I don't care!

I have a couple of short, waist-length padded gilets that I wear over dresses. They are boxy and add an edge to midi dresses - no good linking as both charity shop finds. If my body is warm, the rest of me is good.

Leather jacket. And shades. Just sayin’

This is my answer too. Shades at all times when outdoors, leather jacket with any and every outfit.

wandererofthekingdom · 03/06/2025 11:37

I'll be sticking with my denim jacket!

Of course you can but they are not in style anymore. You’ll look dated.. fine if you don’t care but OP obviously does

Denim jacket never looks dated

Gunnersforthecup · 04/06/2025 16:55

I have a navy cotton jacket that works well for me with maxi dresses and skirts.

I would be perfectly happy to wear a thin denim jacket in the summer, however.

90s looks seem very in, and I was there, wearing a denim jacket. And the local teenagers seem to be rocking those looks.

henlake7 · 04/06/2025 17:54

I think like a PP mentioned shirts can be pretty good over alot of dresses for summer. Either oversized or cropped, very thin or a thicker shacket style.

RampantIvy · 04/06/2025 17:58

The problem is that if it is cold enough to need something over a summer dress a shirt wouldn't suffice for me.

Really nice. Wish they weren’t all acrylic though.

Sorry if I sound baaaad, but surely you wouldn't be wearing a light Summer maxi dress if it's cold out! But I know what you mean, I can feel the cold also, that's why I throw the shirt I mentioned in my bag in case a breeze gets up (on an otherwise warm day) and my goose pimples show up. 😊

Are they. How annoying. I hope M&S don't go back to their bad old ways of selling static electric clothing. I bet they will have to now.
