Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress

Inspired by the other thread…

I love, love, love a maxi dress in the summer (not floral, I prefer plain). But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

A blazer sometimes feels a bit too formal with a casual dress. I have tried a cropped quilted jacket which worked okay with one of my dresses. Utility jacket? I do love a utility jacket and have quite a few. A fitted but casual cropped jacket looked good with one of them, but mine is to be honest a bit too small, had it a long time. Any other ideas or photos for inspiration?

DD is away, and I have been wearing her denim jacket, and have received compliments.

Boxfreshrussell · 01/06/2025 19:51

Denim jackets, midi dresses with white trainers are dated. Wear them forever if you like, who cares, but OP doesn’t want to. This is the style and beauty section, so if you’re not bothered about being stylish, don’t come on here moaning if others are bothered.
OP look on net a porter, always good for ideas.

Not in style yet available to buy just about everywhere right now ??? 🤔

The OP doesn't want to wear a denim jacket.

greengreyblue · 01/06/2025 19:53

Bomber jackets are in op.

Mammyloveswine · 01/06/2025 19:54

Im 38 and love a denim jacket with my maxi dresses! Didn’t know I wasn’t allowed! 🤣

Love fashion and style - bought a new midi dress and white trainers from a gorgeous shop in Cannes this weekend. Nothing dated about it.

Call me shallow but I still can’t look at denim jackets without thinking of lockdown. I’ve got one somewhere but I don’t care if it’s a classic, it’s enjoying a sabbatical.

Admittedly I rarely wear dresses of any length but I think a short, boxy tailored 60s jacket (vintage or retro) looks good with a maxi. Other things I’ve noticed with them recently are a cropped hoody - the kind that zip up the front, left open - and a chunky cable knit cardigan that did look a bit too warm but I liked it anyway.

My other piece of advice, op is to never try and be ironic on Style and Beauty. It always ends in flames.

Lifestooshort71 · 01/06/2025 20:06

I looked at those boxy Sainsbury's jackets but found the sleeves lacked a little something? Praps they felt boxy as well with no structure? Good value though despite that.

I like a knitted jumper over maxi skirts and dresses. Something like these.

Both of those look great. I do that too.

Oh! Now! I really like that. And the price point!

I have many, many utility jackets in every colour going so was reluctant to splash out on, what looks essentially like a cropped version. But could give that one a go. Thank you!

I came on this thread to suggest the Uniqlo jacket so was pleased to see it has already been suggested!

I have the cream one, I found it came up very big but when I sized down it looked good and a bit more up to date than the traditional denim jacket (which I have too!)

Boxfreshrussell · 01/06/2025 20:17

@Parker231 oh well, if you bought them from Cannes, OP should immediately change her mind, and buy several denim jackets that she DOES NOT want.

OP doesn't want everyone's views on bloody denim jackets!! Please can we just move on!

Absolutely not, OP was informed by ‘someone’ denim is out - how ridiculous is that?

Thats the point - she’s only asking because she’s banned (herself) from denim!

There are loads of stretch denim jackets that are ultra soft - like Jules jackets and don’t feel like cold denim.

Don't be a sheep. You can wear something other than a denim jacket. It's not a uniform despite a lot of posters on this thread wearing one. Maybe the OP wants to not follow the herd.

I (personally) think denim jackets are horrible. And I'm interested in the very useful posts on this thread that think outside the denim-box.

You are a lot younger than me and they look good on you. At my age that look just makes me look homeless. I can't carry it off.

I'm 66. I absolutely do not look homeless wearing a jumper over a dress.
And I bet you don't either.

I think it's just getting the proportions right. I love that look in the PP's photos. Mint Velvet have some great voluminous yet strangely flattering skirts, some attached to tops.

That's so funny, I was about to post the same jacket but in the stone colour. Both dd (19) and I tried it on in whistles yesterday and really liked it (but didn't buy it as we'd just spent up in Monica Vinader!). It's really nice on.

That looks good on a fuller maxi shirt and if you are tall.

I am short. My maxi dresses are jersey and fall straight down. Would look slightly ridiculous wearing a jumper over that.

zenae · 01/06/2025 20:58

I throw a light long sleeve white shirt in my bag. I got it abroad in Italy, gorgeous light creaseless fabric. Slip it on, roll up sleeves, (tie across waist if I want) cross body bag, good shades and good to go. I'm sure similar are available everywhere. I'm old though, so the yoof might laugh 😊

Oh that’s not me, just an example of the style.

idonethisthing · 01/06/2025 21:04

i wore a denim jacket today, but it was with olive coloured pareo trousers and a bright white linen oversized shirt and white haviannas. . I’ll wear the same jacket tomorrow because I love it and it’ll be with a cream maxi dress from Zara. It depends on the style I guess, and what suits you. You can still rock a denim jacket, new design or vintage. Screw the rules, make your own. I’m a dedicated follower of fashion and wore my new jorts yesterday, but nothing should ever be off the table if you like it. I maybe should have wore my denim jacket with them for a look. 🤔

I’ve just bought the black version - boring but I had a gap for a black one and I agree this is lovely and a good price.

That’s basically a denim jacket.
