Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress

Inspired by the other thread…

I love, love, love a maxi dress in the summer (not floral, I prefer plain). But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

A blazer sometimes feels a bit too formal with a casual dress. I have tried a cropped quilted jacket which worked okay with one of my dresses. Utility jacket? I do love a utility jacket and have quite a few. A fitted but casual cropped jacket looked good with one of them, but mine is to be honest a bit too small, had it a long time. Any other ideas or photos for inspiration?

I wear my denim jacket. I have blue denim.. khaki denim.. pink denim .. red denim.. cream/ beige denim.
Wear what the hell you like.
Life's too short to conform to other people's opinion.
I'm 66 and still wear my levi denim jacket from the 70s.

I mean, obviously we can. But after a few years of it being my summer go to, I’m also a little bored of it to be fair.

Oh! Now! I really like that. And the price point!

I have many, many utility jackets in every colour going so was reluctant to splash out on, what looks essentially like a cropped version. But could give that one a go. Thank you!

I've been wearing a leather jacket with my maxi/midi dresses this year. I recently bought a brown suede jacket in a charity shop and have started adding that into rotation. I also think coloured denim looks more fresh than the classic blue shade - I still wear my white denim jacket and the fashion police haven't arrested me yet.

Wyse is usually a good shout. And some jackets are on sale at the moment

Why can’t we wear denim jackets with them?

Of course you can but they are not in style anymore. You’ll look dated.. fine if you don’t care but OP obviously does

Have to disagree. Denim jackets over any casual/summer outfit are a classic look! It may not necessarily be ‘on trend’ this very moment according to the style mags but it’s certainly not an outdated look.

OP, your dilemma is also my perennial problem. Love maxi dresses in summer but don't know what to throw over it if it gets chilly. The problem is that the shopping sites don't tend to style jackets over dresses, mostly trousers. It is hard to get ideas so following your thread with interest.

I am not fond of denim jackets. Just a personal taste but might consider one with a rounded collar:

I have this boxy jacket, which is a suede-like but is light weight and silky/velvety and falls beautifully. I gather you have variations on this theme already.

I am basically looking for a more up-to-date replacement for a cardigan or a bolero. Would prefer a cropped style as I have a short body.

I bought that mink suedette New Look one last week and love it! It's really soft and comfortable and goes brilliantly with loads of things - actually smartens me up when I wear it.

Why cant we wear denim jackets?

Sorry who is saying you 'can't' wear a denim jacket?

This....I'm 30 and I see no issue with them?

I love that, what’s the sizing like pls @PoppyBloom ?

Screamingabdabz · 31/05/2025 23:19

I think a fitted cropped denim jacket is far more classic and augments the boho vibe of a summer maxi dress than those hideous boxy Chinese labour camp jackets!

Notimeforaname · 01/06/2025 07:58

But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them
🤣🤣🤣
You sound like girls at school when I was a child.
"Omg you can't wear that!! It's not IN!!" 🤣

TheOGCCL · 01/06/2025 08:51

I think OP was being a bit tongue in cheek with the ‘we can’t wear’. Obviously no one from the fashion police is coming round to confiscate her denim jacket and everyone can wear what they want but this is Style and Beauty where lots of threads are about how to look current.

Floisme · 01/06/2025 08:55

Oh don’t say that @TheOGCCL- someone will be here before I’ve even finished this post to tell us ‘It’s Style and Beauty not Fashion’

madaboutpurple · 01/06/2025 09:09

I was looking on you tube last night and there are plenty of style advisors wearing denim jackets with dresses.

Undethetree · 01/06/2025 09:41

I just throw a sweatshirt or knitted jumper over the top. Either oversized or fitted and it feels more current.

I've noticed a lot of posters on MN get very het up every time on S&B if you don't word your post very carefully re use of the word "can't " (although its entirely obvious to everyone else what a post is getting at as we are on a topic which includes the word "Style" in it. Not a topic which includes the words "Illegal Items of Clothing".).

It's a little tedious.

drspouse · 01/06/2025 09:46

I have a ponte biker jacket from Saint & Sofia, but I do tend to wear it in the winter more. Mine is from a few years ago but they still have similar ones in.

I still wear a denim jacket but I don't care.

I also have a lightweight blazer style from Uniqlo. It is a lot like this which I'm v tempted by but in a blazer style (no waistband).

UNIQLO

drspouse · 01/06/2025 09:48

I see someone else linked to the Uniqlo jacket! I can confirm if the fabric is the same as the one I have it's sturdy but not too heavy and also looks more casual than a proper suit jacket.

XiCi · 01/06/2025 09:49

I don't think any jackets look good with maxi dresses, they just spoil the whole look of the dress. I wear maxi dresses in summer when jackets aren't needed. If I think it may get chilly later on I take a fine knit short black cardigan with me. A cropped fitted denim jacket would be fine to wear with a colour block maxi. The dated look you are probably wanting to avoid is the floral midi, white trainers, denim jacket look.

socks1107 · 01/06/2025 09:52

I only bought a denim jacket a year ago - will be wearing it this year as I love it
