Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress

WutheringTights · 31/05/2025 07:18

Inspired by the other thread…

I love, love, love a maxi dress in the summer (not floral, I prefer plain). But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

A blazer sometimes feels a bit too formal with a casual dress. I have tried a cropped quilted jacket which worked okay with one of my dresses. Utility jacket? I do love a utility jacket and have quite a few. A fitted but casual cropped jacket looked good with one of them, but mine is to be honest a bit too small, had it a long time. Any other ideas or photos for inspiration?

Why can't you wear a denim jacket with them?

LoveItaly · 01/06/2025 12:26

HorrorFan81 · 31/05/2025 08:32

Sorry who is saying you 'can't' wear a denim jacket?

The fashion police🙄. I am still wearing mine, in fact I prefer to wear things that the masses aren’t, who wants to look like everyone else?

henlake7 · 01/06/2025 12:42

I usually prefer a little cropped cardigan. Then I can wear it indoors as well if its chilly.

Pinktomatoredlettuce · 01/06/2025 13:19

Denim jackets are fine - as far as I’m concerned it’s like jeans , never out of fashion just some styles of jean are more in fashion due to cut and fit if that makes sense ? So this season you may want to look at a coloured more cropped denim jacket rather than typical heavy blue regular length.

Alternatively - a boxy cut cardigan could work. Similar to the quilted pattern jacket cut but if you want something for warmer days. Ties rather than buttons are more in currently if that worries you. Another look I’ve seen on a few women lately with dresses are kimonos and they look really chic.

ToadRage · 01/06/2025 13:34

Why can't you wear a denim jacket if you want to? I don't think in any phase of my life i haven't had a denim jacket on hand. I tend to wear leather in the winter, denim in the summer. I did have a utility jacket in my late teens - early twenties that I wore to death, just so versatile, went with everything. I went through a phase in my mid teens of wearing a fitted denim shirt open over a vest or dress. I have a patterned cropped jacket that i loved when i bought it but have only worn once.

Rtato · 01/06/2025 13:44

She doesn’t want to wear a denim jacket!!! Obviously everyone knows you can wear what you want, the OP wasn’t being serious. She’s not criticising others wearing it, she just doesn’t want to wear one and would like to look more current. It’s not a crime!

I like a light, bright bomber jacket. Cropped and slim fit, especially if the dress has a voluminous skirt.

Grammarnut · 01/06/2025 15:04

Wear a denim jacket if you like them. Who says we can't wear denim jackets? An alternative is a quilted jacket or bolero. But wear what you like and that suits you - whether it's fashionable doesn't matter, if it looks good it's fashionable!

Sorry who is saying you 'can't' wear a denim jacket?

I still wear mine both trucker style and a collarless 3/4 sleeve one. I am in my 50s...

BebbanburgIsMine · 01/06/2025 15:44

I wear my denim jacket with my maxi and midi drrsses, who says you can’t?

My jacket is pink, and I also have a deep red suede one, love them both!

Lifestooshort71 · 01/06/2025 16:04

I suppose if we moved on from the word 'can't' we could post more alternatives for the OP, there've been some good ones so far.

coolcahuna · 01/06/2025 16:05

ginasevern · 31/05/2025 11:03

Bloody hell, I've been wearing a denim jacket with not only maxi dresses but with midi dresses too. Please don't report me.

This made me LOL. Me too and with trainers which I think are also banned with denim and dresses

MarxistMags · 01/06/2025 17:02

How much ! 😮 I'd take myself off to Sainsbury's or Next for a look.
And what is wrong with the denim jacket ? As long as you don't double denim. 😄

lalalalalady · 01/06/2025 17:08

I didn’t realise denim jackets were out, I wore one with a maxi dress last weekend. Thanks for the heads up 🤣 where are we finding what’s in style or not these days? I feel like I’m living under a rock now I’m 30🙃

Sainsburys.

Casual jacket to wear with maxi dress
IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/06/2025 17:23

I owned a denim jacket once. I didn't like.

Over dresses, particularly if voluminous I wear cropped, boxy jackets, no longer than waist length or fitted, riding jackets, which can be a little longer than waist length.

Quirkswork · 01/06/2025 18:01

OP doesn't want everyone's views on bloody denim jackets!! Please can we just move on!!!

PoppyBloom · 01/06/2025 18:31

bendmeoverbackwards · 31/05/2025 23:18

I love that, what’s the sizing like pls @PoppyBloom ?

I am a size 10/12 and have this in XS - a nice relaxed fit

Silvertulips · 01/06/2025 18:37

OP doesn't want everyone's views on bloody denim jackets!! Please can we just move on!

Absolutely not, OP was informed by ‘someone’ denim is out - how ridiculous is that?

Thats the point - she’s only asking because she’s banned (herself) from denim!

There are loads of stretch denim jackets that are ultra soft - like Jules jackets and don’t feel like cold denim.

Parker231 · 01/06/2025 18:41

Bobnobob · 31/05/2025 14:25

Of course you can but they are not in style anymore. You’ll look dated.. fine if you don’t care but OP obviously does

A denim jacket is never dated - it’s timeless and has been worn successfully your decades.

Coconutter24 · 01/06/2025 18:44

But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them

Why can’t we, have I missed something? Is there a new ruling?

RampantIvy · 01/06/2025 18:53

Screamingabdabz · 31/05/2025 23:19

I think a fitted cropped denim jacket is far more classic and augments the boho vibe of a summer maxi dress than those hideous boxy Chinese labour camp jackets!

That is an apt description of the current "in" jackets Smile
Shackets and oversized jumpers over a maxi dress just make me look like a homeless bag lady, and I really don't like the look of the Chines labour camp utility jackets, so I will continue to wear my classic, dated looking denim jacket because it looks better on me than what is currently in at the moment.

MayaPinion · 01/06/2025 19:42

I have one of these in almost every colour. They’re linen blend, light, comfortable, and go with anything. They can be dressed up or down and they’re perfect with dresses and jeans - and they’re only £25 each.

What the OP said was

But now that we can’t wear denim jackets with them (and, to be fair, I don’t think I’ve worn my denim jacket for a couple of years, thinking back) What do you wear over the top for when it’s cooler?

She doesn't want to wear a denim jacket. She's bored with denim jackets. I doubt she literally meant that she thinks she's not allowed to wear one

These are the jackets I wear over dresses.

Cabbages and Roses Hettie Jacket
Cabbages and Roses Flossie Jacket
Casey Casey Juliette jacket
Baum und Pferdgarten Bebeth jacket
Cabbages and Roses Erin jacket

greengreyblue · 01/06/2025 19:46

I just wouldn’t wear a summer dress unless it was warm enough to go without a jacket. If I needed a jacket I’d wear summery wide leg trousers or jeans . Then you could wear a casual blazer. I have a khaki utility jacket from per Una that is casual. I also have a long denim coat/ Mac .

Lostuser · 01/06/2025 19:47

Bobnobob · 31/05/2025 14:25

Not in style yet available to buy just about everywhere right now ??? 🤔
