If you were only allowed to have ONE perfume for life which would it be and why?

As title says really. I think mine would be Halfeti because it’s the only one I’ve ever had compliments on.

Baccarat Rouge

evilharpy · 03/04/2025 13:21

Cheap and cheerful Clarins Eau Dynamistante. Lasts 5 mins but makes me feel like I'm at a spa.

@NovemberMorn

I once heard if you can't smell your own perfume then it is the correct scent for you. I can't smell mine and always get compliments. Mine are anything Chanel.

that's good to know but I wear my perfume for me and don’t really care if anyone else can smell it, so I get a bit sad if I can’t smell my perfume 🥲

I feel like I’ve still not quite found my perfect scent but Ghost Orb of Night would prob be what I’d choose if I had to only pick one.

Jemimapuddleduk · 03/04/2025 19:38

Shalimar.

Gucci rush 2. The one in the clear pink rectangular bottle

Has this been discontinued? I couldn't find it anywhere so bought one called Ruth online which is a great dupe. Cheap as chips too.

mustytrusty · 03/04/2025 19:41

Angel by Mugler. The original one that smells like a sweet shop.

Magpiecomplex · 03/04/2025 19:49

Shalimar for me too, closely followed by Penhaligons Luna.

Our skins chemical make up changes every now and again, so sometimes scents that once smelt beautiful, don't suddenly!
I had this with DKNY Woman when it first came out. I tried the tester before Christmas that year, in Debenhams perfume department. I absolutely loved it. My dad always brought me perfume back from his holidays, so I specifically asked for that one when he asked me.
So when he went away in the June the next year, he brought me it back. I opened the box, all excited, sprayed it and was instantly sick and got a headache! Tried it again a few days later, with the same result! Gave it to my mum, she loved it and it smelt gorgeous on her, like it did when I tried the tester!
I was gutted!

I used to love this in the 90s but last time I tried it I didn’t like it 🙁 not sure if it’s me or the fragrance that changed

I definitely think that my skin chemistry has changed. Some perfumes smell a lot sweeter and stronger on me than they did

Chanel No 5.

I started buying Guy Laroche, Fidji, again last year and I wear that one a lot as it reminds me of the late 80s and 90s when I was going out such a lot socially. Every time I wear it I go back down Memory Lane so I'd be happy to have that as my only perfume for life.

I so miss those days ... sigh ... :-)

Me too… I have to order Fidji from Amazon … is there anywhere that still sells it over the counter? It’s become my daytime perfume all over again. But fundamentally I’m a No 19 wearer… have been all my adult life.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 04/04/2025 07:08

I’ve never understood the Chanel number 5 love. I think it smells horrible on everyone

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 04/04/2025 07:21

Tom Ford Oud Wood for me and Avon Timeless at the other end of the £ scale.
Both get compliments for me.

I get Fidji from Just My Look on line, I buy a lot of stuff from them and they have it. I also like Nina Ricci, L'air Du Temps, another favourite of my social days that I wore a lot.

Although Chanel No. 19 would be my first choice for only one perfume for life, I like all the ones I've mentioned plus Tresor by Lancome, Dune by can't remember who, Paloma Picasso and if I go to very inexpensive perfume, have a soft spot for Gloria Vanderbilt which I think you can usually get in the local chemists.

Acqua di Parma, Blu Mediterraneo, Arancia di Capri. It's a lovely fresh, clean, invigorating scent that reminds me of Italy. It's suitable for every occasion. It is expensive but it lasts a good while before I need to spritz again. I buy the hand and body lotion too. My favourite used to be Dolce and Gabbana's Light Blue but Acqua di Parma is a cut above.

My ds wears this and it's gorgeous. Bit weird if I wear the same as my son ,I'll have to wait until he moves out to wear it!

I love anything fresh and soapy smelling.

paisley256 · 04/04/2025 09:01

The original Armani Acqua Di Giò. It was glorious and nothing like the new version.

Also the original Stella McCartney perfume that was sadly discontinued.

Or another discontinued favourite Oceanus from The Bodyshop.

Apollonia1 · 04/04/2025 09:33

Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue

madaboutpurple · 04/04/2025 11:07

Angel.

MonkeyTennis34 · 04/04/2025 11:30

Love Angel, I wore it on my honeymoon.

Also love Portrait of a Lady.

These 2 perfumes are very Wow, statement perfumes.

If anyone knows of any other statement, strong, compliment-gaining perfumes…please share!

La Vie est Belle also falls into this category IMO.

I’ve ordered the Maison Margiela discovery set for some inspiration for a strong Spring/Summer fragrance.

Vilhelm parfumerie Basilico and felini (and I’m not sure I spent all of those words quite right!).

Oooo good choice.

I don’t think I could choose just one because I’d get bored. But I’d be willing to give it a go if I could bring back Om by Gap which saw me through my late twenties. Never smelt anything like it since.

Nah, just get yourself some!
I sit next to a young female colleague (early 20s) who loves the smell and now she's buying it. Another young female colleague (aged 19) loves it too. I never though I'd be a trend setter at 61😀

tobee · 06/04/2025 23:19

Toss up between Guerlain Jicky or Chanel Coco. Even though Jicky is more year round, I think it has to be Coco.

But I'd be so sad never to wear Cape Heartache by Imaginary Authors ever again!

PerfumeAddict88 · 07/04/2025 18:39

Mine would be Narciso Rodriguez For Her Eau de Parfum – it’s that perfect blend of rose and musk that feels both elegant and comforting. I always reach for it when I want to feel polished, even if it’s just school runs and errands. It really is a scent that stays with you (in the best way!).
I actually found it online at Glow Empire, and it’s become a staple all over again. If anyone’s looking for it, here’s the link: www.glowempire.co.uk
