Are leggings and dresses back?

If so, is it different from 12 years ago or whenever it was?

I'm over 50s and don't want to look like I'm stuck in a 10+ yr old trend but I always loved the leggings and shift dress and tunic style.

Or is there an alternative to the leggings? I'm tall and tops are usually too short so wear dresses and leggings instead of tops and trousers.

God I hope so …no advice as I’m in the same boat as you, but waiting to hear if someone more stylish than me knows any more about this 😂

Bluekios · 14/03/2025 13:53

I don’t think it’s ever been in style has it? More of a uniform for those who want to cover their legs and stomach up.

notacooldad · 14/03/2025 13:58

I hope not.
I used to unintentionally look like a primary school teacher which would be fine if I was but it wasn't a great look on a day to day basis.

AubernFable · 14/03/2025 14:00

I haven’t seen anyone wear leggings under anything for a very long time, a good alternative is black tights and if staying warm is an issue fuzzy lined tights.

ColdHenrietta · 14/03/2025 14:01

Not Unless You Are Spending At Least £1k Per Item. Hmm

InMyMNEra · 14/03/2025 14:01

Were they ever “in”? It’s what I had to resort to wearing during pregnancies (shudder)

Creamsnackered · 14/03/2025 14:02

I'd say this was in fashion more like 20 years ago, because it was when I was at uni. Then probably took a long time to go away completely, for the not super young anyway, because it was so easy and comfortable.

CharlotteSometimes1 · 14/03/2025 14:06

It was never in style, more a kind of uniform for people who want to be comfortable and aren’t bothered about trends. If that’s you then do it, if you’re bothered about looking stylish or on trend then absolutely don’t.

not sure what you’re age has to do with it.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 14/03/2025 14:07

As PPs have said it’s never been stylish, more a thrown on with little thought, definitely a comfort over style thing

OohRains · 14/03/2025 14:09

Only if you're Anne in Amandaland

Hollietree · 14/03/2025 14:12

Where I live you would only see people wearing gym leggings paired with a gym top and trainers.

I don’t think I’ve seen any adult wear any other type of leggings for 10+ years.

If you love the look/comfort of a dress and leggings….. then go for it. But if your main issue is wanting to look fashionable, then this is not a favoured look currently.

KitsyWitsy · 14/03/2025 14:15

It’s never been in style. Do you want to look like a toddler going to nursery?

Wantitalltogoaway · 14/03/2025 14:21

It’s never been ‘in’, just a way of covering up.

Although it wasn’t as bad as dresses over ACTUAL trousers or jeans 😩

henlake7 · 14/03/2025 14:24

Who cares! Its blimmin' freezing right now. Even fleece tights are too cold for me so I will continue to wear my thermal leggings under dresses until it warms up!

If we are talking leggings and tunics then thats not a look I would go for. Mainly because I used to live in them 100Ibs ago so it has depressing connotations for me.

Harsh but true 🤭

DramaAlpaca · 14/03/2025 14:36

God, I hope not! I'm in the 50+ bracket and tall, and I didn't like the leggings under dresses look the first time round.

It would be comfortable I suppose, but I like being fashionable <shallow>

Why are people saying this was never “in”? Anyone who is saying this must have been living under a rock! This look was massively in style, in the mid 2000s if I remember correctly. It was like a uniform among teenagers as well, typically worn with ballet flats and a fine fabric scarf. With layered hair and a side swept fringe.

Oh god it was so horrible, you’re right though it was definitely a thing at one point.

I think you’re right. Maybe we’ve repressed it

Have zero recollection of this. Certainly not with scarves.

however to answer the question yes I’ve seen a few fashionable people wearing dresses with leggings (me included but I’m not trendy)

TheProvincialLady · 14/03/2025 14:51

It was definitely a fashionable look in the mid 00s. And it wasn’t worse than many of the hideous looks we see have seen in recent years, so not sure why everyone is so appalled. At least with this look you didn’t have to see people’s camel toe, which sadly I often do now.

Doingmybestbut · 14/03/2025 14:56

Whoops, I never stopped.

HaloDolly · 14/03/2025 15:01

Cripes, I’ve been wearing leggings and a Fat Face dress over them for years. As a PP said, I’m honestly not bothered about trends, I’d rather be comfy.

BestIsWest · 14/03/2025 15:04

Funnily enough I saw someone wearing a well cut charcoal grey dress and white leggings today with a blazer and trainers and I thought she looked really good. It’s not a look I’ve ever worn.

Yes. This was a ubiquitous look from around 2007-2012ish where I live. Hated it and hope very much that it never comes back.
