Are leggings and dresses back?

If so, is it different from 12 years ago or whenever it was?

I'm over 50s and don't want to look like I'm stuck in a 10+ yr old trend but I always loved the leggings and shift dress and tunic style.

Or is there an alternative to the leggings? I'm tall and tops are usually too short so wear dresses and leggings instead of tops and trousers.

As a primary school teacher this is my uniform…

SpottyDottyD · 14/03/2025 19:04

Well hopefully as this is exactly what I’m wearing right now 🤣 I’m currently wearing a below the knee Popsy dress, purple leggings, cardigan and boots. It’s classic and timeless to me, the dress suits my shape and looks stylish. I don’t care if it’s not the height of fashion!

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 19:05

@newnamesix & @Onlycoffee you are welcome.

ShaunaSadeki · 14/03/2025 19:09

I loved this look in the early 2000s!

Overtheatlantic · 14/03/2025 19:14

I had a colleague who wore leggings and white stuff tunics. She was adorable but she looked like Robin Hood.

anonymous98 · 14/03/2025 19:21

I don't think so, but dresses/skirts and coloured tights are in

handsdownthebest · 14/03/2025 19:52

Has it ever been a style? I must have missed it and will def not be taking it up.

GottaWork · 14/03/2025 19:54

Wear what you like.

Explainthe · 14/03/2025 20:03

If

lljkk · 14/03/2025 20:09

I have dressed this way for 30 yrs & always will in future, too

I don’t think it’s ever been in style has it? More of a uniform for those who want to cover their legs and stomach up.

I agree. It’s a ghastly look that screams ‘I hate my body so I’m going to cover every inch of it up with something akin to a burkhini but act like it’s fashion’

KitsyWitsy · 14/03/2025 21:09

I’m not saying people haven’t ever worn this ensemble just that they shouldn’t have! 🤣🤣🤣. No real shade as I’ve definitely worn legging /tunic combos myself when in the thick of parenting young children. However ‘style’ means something different to me. I feel like a super fashion conscious lady, isn’t going to be wearing this kind of outfit.

I wear dresses and tights pretty much everyday and some are definitely comfort over style. But then I’m not wandering around in my basic outfits considering myself to be some kind of style icon.

Branleuse · 14/03/2025 21:13

Leggings are fine under a casual dress or a tunic.
Its never been high fashion, but I don't think its a faux pas either.

LlynTegid · 14/03/2025 21:16

This is a thread about style and beauty. Leggings are neither. I wondered if whoever invented them as outerwear did so as a practical joke.

I wore this get up when I put on a lot of weight from anti psychotic medication. Fat, mental and clad in tunics over leggings : those were dark days.

I think your post might win Mumsnet today!

I am old enough to remember when this style was regularly discussed, nay even recommended, in this very Style and Beauty forum…

Maloneyb · 14/03/2025 21:19

Umm.. I’ve been doing this since it came back in.. I live in leggings 😭 I wish I didn’t but nothing is more comfy and I can’t go bare-legged.

Why are people saying this was never “in”? Anyone who is saying this must have been living under a rock! This look was massively in style, in the mid 2000s if I remember correctly. It was like a uniform among teenagers as well, typically worn with ballet flats and a fine fabric scarf. With layered hair and a side swept fringe.

This! It was very much part of the boho / twee trend in the 2000s. If you were a teen or young adult it was very in.

Whoops, I never stopped.

Me neither. Leggings and tights are the same thing to me. Leggings are the warmer version. I’m not going to wear leggings with a normal top, I’d look obscene.

BCBird · 14/03/2025 21:30

Wear what you please.

Oh yes I wore this a lot - the short leggings haha. Now I wear mine long like
tights.

Onlycoffee · 14/03/2025 18:16

Yes that was obviously my intention, so glad you voiced it so clearly for me.

I didn't mention "black" leggings as I thought people would realise, given that's what the outfits were early 00s.

Or are toddlers wearing black leggings these days, I wouldn't know.

I love that you mention it was 12 years ago but also early 00s… exactly how I feel 🤣

RosesAndHellebores · 14/03/2025 21:43

Loved the look.
Also loved my brightly coloured cardigans and matching tights in the 80s; and
my flowery frocks and broderie anglais petticoats in the late 70s
Loons
Tight velvet jeans
Sweatshirts tucked into jeans
Cowboy boots
Bright stripy puffa gilets

Please can some of the wonderful, non trendy stuff come back.

Omg I didn't even realise, what happens to time? A whole ten years of it! Glad I'm not the only one 😅

I live in leggings and dresses… but then I am a primary school teacher 😂 they’re just so comfy! I absolutely HATE wearing jeans, don’t even own a pair as I find them unbearably uncomfortable.

I’m really very sorry to have laughed because it was very clearly quite a difficult time for you but the image you’ve conjured up here is really something!
hoping you’re in a much better place now 😌
