Are leggings and dresses back?

If so, is it different from 12 years ago or whenever it was?

I'm over 50s and don't want to look like I'm stuck in a 10+ yr old trend but I always loved the leggings and shift dress and tunic style.

Or is there an alternative to the leggings? I'm tall and tops are usually too short so wear dresses and leggings instead of tops and trousers.

I wore this get up when I put on a lot of weight from anti psychotic medication. Fat, mental and clad in tunics over leggings : those were dark days.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 14/03/2025 15:12

I don’t think they were ever in. Wear what you like but it won’t be high fashion!

newnamesix · 14/03/2025 15:14

I have a friend who used to wear this a lot. A wrap dress with leggings and slouchy boots or ankle boots.

She's tall and slender and always put together and she looked amazing, kind of a mix of bohemian and stylish. I'll have to ask her if she's bringing it back.

IsItAllRubbish · 14/03/2025 15:18

I’m wearing this right now and I look fab. What a load of horrible shite some people spout!

Waitingforsummer75 · 14/03/2025 15:20

Sitting in Costa proudly wearing a tunic dress and leggings - no idea if it's 'in' or not but it's a look that suits me and I feel happy wearing

PilatesPeach · 14/03/2025 15:37

OP please wear what you like whether it is leggings and dresses or skinny jeans or anything else - life is too short to worry about these things. Hold your head high and strut your stuff.

Diningtableornot · 14/03/2025 15:41

Oh. I’ve been wearing dresses with leggings for years. With ankle boots. I think they look nice but perhaps all this time I’ve been mistaken for a toddler and/or primary school teacher…

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 15:46

Longer length tips are coming back

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 15:46

And it was in at one point, huge in the early 00s amongst the youths but maybe some on here missed that trend?

WhenWillWanksWildly · 14/03/2025 15:48

I’ve not seen anything on the horizon with any of the fashion influencers I follow. The few that wear leggings or those sweaty pleather leggings look distinctly just the wrong side of fashion at the minute.

Fagli · 14/03/2025 15:57

It was definitely in at one point. The teens and early 20s favoured the jeans and dress look aka Avril Lavigne. The older look was more like this outfit (article is 14yrs old!!).

If it ever does come back it will be different. Bit like the baggy jeans trend now, different the grungy baggy jeans look of my youth!

When you’re a 20yr old though you look good in everything, no matter the trend!!

How to dress: What happened to the dress-over-leggings look? | Jess Cartner-Morley

The fashion police deemed it over, that's what. What to do now, when it's hot, but skin tone or mood rule out showing those legs, asks Jess Cartner-Morley

I still wear leggings with dresses. Shrug. I know it's not the height of fashion, but I don't care. Frankly it makes no sense to me that thick tights are considered fine but leggings are verboten (especially as it's hard to tell which is which).

Bluekios · 14/03/2025 13:53

I don’t think it’s ever been in style has it? More of a uniform for those who want to cover their legs and stomach up.

Yes I think so. And teamed with some sort of boot. It wasn’t fashionable. Just popular.

Hoolihan · 14/03/2025 16:28

It was definitely fashionable for a brief time around 2010. Hopefully not making a comeback as it's just weird- why not wear tights?!

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:31

because you often wanted the foot showing and they are thicker than tights

FastFood · 14/03/2025 16:31

If it's back, I'm afraid I'll have to support any sort of nuclear anihilation plan.

Creamsnackered · 14/03/2025 16:32

It was fashionable for a short time. It started with footless tights and progressed to leggings. It was very much what 19-21 year olds wore when I was at uni. Like any fashion, once it started to be adopted by almost all middle aged women, trends moved on. I think it's entirely disingenuous to suggest age doesn't come into it. I'm a middle aged primary teacher and completely accept that once middle aged primary teachers start wearing something, it's probably not cutting edge any more!

FastFood · 14/03/2025 16:34

Joke aside, I don't think it's ever been fashionable.
Being ubiquitous doesn't make something fashionable.
I don't think it's ever been inspirational. It's convenient at best, but no one has ever said "oh wow have you seen Charlotte Gainsbourg at the Milan Fashion Week with her dress + leggings?"

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:36

well she's in similar here 😆

My pictures won't post! Just google Charlotte G and leggings

It's inevitable that after years of a shorter looser silhouette that it changes again.

midlifeattheoasis · 14/03/2025 16:42

I hope not!

I definitely saw Kate Moss in a dress and leggings too, and SJP. Definitely the cropped length and often high heels. It was really just a 2010 twist on the popular 80s look or dress/skirt and cropped leggings.

Watermelonsregularly · 14/03/2025 16:43

Um stirrup leggings = ski pants 😂

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:43

Exactly not sure why people think it's wasn't a fashion thing. It was!
