Are leggings and dresses back?

If so, is it different from 12 years ago or whenever it was?

I'm over 50s and don't want to look like I'm stuck in a 10+ yr old trend but I always loved the leggings and shift dress and tunic style.

Or is there an alternative to the leggings? I'm tall and tops are usually too short so wear dresses and leggings instead of tops and trousers.

It's inevitable that after years of a shorter looser silhouette that it changes again.

I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for stirrup leggings, I remember wearing them as a child! I doubt I will be wearing them again though, not in public anyway!

CeeJay81 · 14/03/2025 16:44

I live in long tops/dresses and leggings. So thats me out off fashion then lol but I wear what suits my shape(large bum). Mumsnet doesn't seem to like leggings but jeans look awful and make my bottom half even bigger.

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:36

well she's in similar here 😆

Yes but it is not a dress + leggings like this
I think what is "offensive" with the dress + leggings combo is that zone where the naked leg is visible. If leggings are used as tights, with boots, this is a totally different game.

But different age groups interpret trends differently

lavendarwillow · 14/03/2025 16:49

Oh it was definitely a fashion around 2005-2010ish? So much so, that even on holiday in a hot country I would wear my summer dresses with leggings underneath and gold sandals!

PontiacFirebird · 14/03/2025 16:51

Oh I had that dress Jess Whastername is wearing! Love a tulip skirt.
I wear leggings because I can’t hack the feel of tights. I’m not sorry.

I wouldn’t class these tops as dresses or tunics.
what @FastFood posted is more the image I get when I picture what OP is describing which is much more middle aged mum vibes

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:53

I don't remember anyone my age wearing it as per @FastFood photo 🤷🏻‍♀️

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 16:57

Granted I was being facetious but to deny it wasn't a trend seems odd to me.

LimeLime · 14/03/2025 17:06

I wear short dresses with leggings and I'm no fashion icon but I do think it suits me as I have long skinny legs and a somewhat apple-shaped top half. I am aware that the toddler set have this look down though, and they have jolly flowery leggings which I must refrain from ever buying or I will look like an idiot. I sometimes wear narrow trousers under dresses, but never jeans, I'm not Avril Lavigne.

Chuchoter · 14/03/2025 17:08

I hope not. It's a very cheap mumsy look.

I like the midi wrap dress/slouchy bag/white mesh trainers/headband leggings outfit. It's all plain, no prints, with draping. Much more modern.

loadalaundry · 14/03/2025 17:10

@Dandeliontea123 yes it looks really fresh

PrettayGood · 14/03/2025 17:10

I hope not. It screamed ‘mumsy and lost my way’ back in the early 2000s.

I pinned this a few months ago as I really liked the evening & pared back looks.

Im currently wearing a 1980s style dress with a tulip skirt and leggings!
Im extremely fashionable.....just not in this decade!😎

TortolaParadise · 14/03/2025 17:23

Madonna, Whitney, Bananarama... all did this look in the 80's. Check out the old pop videos. In my opinion it is a good look; it all depends on how your carry yourself. Even designer labels can look questionable on some...😏

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 14/03/2025 16:20

I still wear leggings with dresses. Shrug. I know it's not the height of fashion, but I don't care. Frankly it makes no sense to me that thick tights are considered fine but leggings are verboten (especially as it's hard to tell which is which).

and... leggings are cheaper to maintain than tights (they don't ladder).

Coffeeforayear · 14/03/2025 17:32

When my dd was wanting to volunteer at the library she was given a list of what she couldn't wear- no jeans, short skirts or dresses, apart from tunic style dresses with leggings underneath.

Hence I think of it as a librarian look.

Thank you! Love this and if it's in Harpers Bazaar it must be ok 😁

One of my colleagues wore it all the time and looked great in it.

Onlycoffee · 14/03/2025 18:16

KitsyWitsy · 14/03/2025 14:15

It’s never been in style. Do you want to look like a toddler going to nursery?

Yes that was obviously my intention, so glad you voiced it so clearly for me.

I didn't mention "black" leggings as I thought people would realise, given that's what the outfits were early 00s.

Or are toddlers wearing black leggings these days, I wouldn't know.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/03/2025 18:19

Oh let’s hope so but to be honest I’ve dressed like this for around last 15 years!! As being curvy it suits me

DuchessOfNarcissex · 14/03/2025 18:20

@Onlycoffee , alternate the look with lucy & yak style jumpsuits and we can be toddlers together.

newnamesix · 14/03/2025 19:02

@loadalaundry

I really like some of those looks. Thanks for posting them
