Are leggings and dresses back?

If so, is it different from 12 years ago or whenever it was?

I'm over 50s and don't want to look like I'm stuck in a 10+ yr old trend but I always loved the leggings and shift dress and tunic style.

Or is there an alternative to the leggings? I'm tall and tops are usually too short so wear dresses and leggings instead of tops and trousers.

Yes, there was no such thing as fashion before the internet. People just wore slacks and shoes they bought from the People's Friend magazine. It all went to pot when Bill Gates, notorious style guru, came along.

Oh yeah, I remember that, he ruined everything with his Parisian ways. Grin

Have lost a lot of weight recently courtesy of mounjaro prior to this it was absolutely my uniform due to a horrendous mum tum.

I'll still wear leggings throughout the winter months + tunic top if just messing around at home fell into a rut with clothing and didn't realise it was so dated.

I have a better figure now so trying to think about alternative ways to dress

It’s winter here and I have been wearing shortish A line tunic dress over wide legged cropped jeans.
i am 60 and had several complements.

God what a sad world we live in, before the Internet you'd wear something regardless of whether it's in fashion very sad world

That's simply not true. Clothes have been in fashion for hundreds of years. Before fashion magazines there were pamphlets and engraved plates circulated so men and women could see what the current trends in clothes, shoes and hairstyles were and recreate them. Harpers Bazaar and the Young Ladies Journal magazines were around in the 19th century and translated French publications to English.

Very inspirational I just think though that instead of following trends like sheep why not just wear what you like without asking the opinions of how others think people should dress

It’s never been ‘in’, just a way of covering up.

Although it wasn’t as bad as dresses over ACTUAL trousers or jeans 😩

I wore this a lot. It suited me.

@Kennobi

yes there was! I worked for a fashion magazine. Before magazines there was fashion too - Regency Britain had a distinct style as did Tudor times!!!! Things change quicker now but there’s been summer and winter collections since the days of Coco Chanel.

as to the original question, it’s never really been “in” nor “out” leggings (or thick tights) and tunics/jersey dresses are a comfortable way to dress for those of us us need to look a bit more formal than jeans but not the whole business dress thing. I tend to in winter as it’s just so practical, comfortable and my office is cold. I deal with the public some days and need to look a bit professional but friendly, thank goodness for Seasalt. I don’t care if it’s fashionable, it’s work!

Tights and leggings are completely different.
leggings and dresses are always for either that Brighton look with a crocheted hat and an ethnic cross body bag and mismatched old man cardi look or for women who want to cover things up that they don’t like.

I'm not sure its inspirational but it is interesting to look at how through history people have wanted to fit in. Big changes in fashion like the move to simple cotton chemises which showed the natural shape of the body during the Thermidorian Reaction stage of the French Revoluton (some women actually wore them wet!) or the move to mini skirts in the 60s don't really happen any more and when they did it took a while for them to become fashions that the everyperson on the street wore.

Leggings under dresses and skirts was big in the 80s so about 20 years before the look came round again in the mid-2000s. So it's definitely due a comeback!
