Barrel style jeans - wtf?

I've been seeing these all over the place and I just don't understand who would look good in them? Maybe it's because I'm short and on the dumpier side so can't imagine anything less flattering to me, but I don't think they look good on any of the advertising I've seen either? Am I officially old now?

I’ve totally re-embraced them! We used to call them baggies in the late 90s/early 00s, and every self respecting mosher had several pairs with bike chains hanging off them. God, I’ve missed them! Comfiest jeans on the bloody planet. I get mine from EMP.

I'm not convinced they're the same thing. I'm old enough to remember baggies well but the images that came up for me when I searched barrel jeans were definitely not the same shape. Baggies were great and definitely a better shape than what I found for barrel.

I can assure you these are not in fashion

I love it when you get a response like this on S&B! Grin. That's told us.

Style is frequently a missing ingredient in fashion threads . There’s never a fashion style you must wear at its most extreme incarnation. M&S and others tone down trends but this style of jeans is not new. The difference is they have become more widespread and not just at Cos, Toast and a few others. If they don’t suit you, don’t wear them. The horseshoe are the exaggerated ones

Ooohhh…I just assumed that’s what they were calling them these days - I wasn’t expecting a pair of baggies to show up when I ordered what EMP called ‘bootcut’ (ha!). You’re right though, having Googled them, the barrel ones seem to taper at the ankle again, whereas my baggies are widest at the bottom.

I rescind my earlier comment, they look ridonkulous 🤣

RobertaFirmino · 20/02/2025 00:18

I am a lanky sod and I look bloody awful in these jeans - I've tried them on in a couple of shops and they were just so bloody flappy. I'll stick with M&S Harper or Sienna thanks.

MrsPeregrine · 20/02/2025 00:50

I tried some of the Sainsbury’s ones a few weeks ago and they looked truly awful on me. I’m on the smaller side but have a bit of a tummy on me and these made that area look huge. I actually felt upset looking at myself in the mirror with these jeans on. They went straight back the next day. I just don’t see the appeal of them.

redstripestar · 20/02/2025 01:28

I'm still in skinnies mainly as they are the only Jean that I can still wear if I put a few pounds on which I have. I forced myself today to try on some new styles which included the barrel Jean in Next. I have to say once I got over the initial hmm they were OK. They have features I wish more jeans had. They are small at the waist and curve over the hips. I think they need to be very high cotton content though like 1 or 0% so I am still looking. I think it's a useful Jean to own.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 20/02/2025 01:35

Wide legged: sure

Wide legged and gathered at the bottom: WTAF? Who do you think I am, the Genie of the Lamp?

Babyenroute · 20/02/2025 03:58

My two year old looks adorable in that shape 😀

YesImawitch · 20/02/2025 06:15

Aren't the cowboy leg ones horseshoe not barrel leg?
I've got Toast Barrel legs and they are totally different.
The Horseshoe ones look awful sorry

YesImawitch · 20/02/2025 06:17

Ps I think the "oooh Sainsburys jeans" threads are A1 started by Sainsburys, they do it every year.

I am medium height and slim so I tried on a pair. I looked like I had borrowed some jeans from my grandad 😆

Princessfluffy · 20/02/2025 07:35

I bought some from Free People and they are my favourite jeans of all time.

I tried to buy another pair, tried probably 15 pairs of the same style and with the same size in the label, none of them fit the same as the original pair and none of them looked good enough for me to want to wear them. I then tried a few pairs in the size up as well, again no consistent fit, one pair was ok but not as good as the OG pair.

From which I deduce not just that FP size consistency is beyond terrible, but also that small differences can make barrel look either amazing (I get compliments on these jeans a lot) or rubbish.

Wiennetta · 20/02/2025 07:58

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 19/02/2025 23:08

By flattering I personally mean not look like an idiot...nothing to do with looking smaller. I could be completely wrong but not one picture of them has made me think 'gee those look great I'd love to try a pair on'. Horses for courses and all that.

I wonder why you can’t just see a jean style you don’t like and move on? No need to say that it’s ridiculous or would make the wearer look like an idiot. It’s not for you - how about the 1000s of other jeans out there that you might like?

ThymeScent · 20/02/2025 08:40

Hideous! Just returned from a cruise where all the older American ladies were wearing theses - honestly enough spare material in them to clothe an army.

Oh no you’re wrong! Short and dumpy looks really good in barrel jeans honestly.

I absolutely love them - Sainsbury’s do a brilliant pair at £22 I get so many compliments about.

I absolutely tuck my jumper in, that’s a step too far!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 20/02/2025 09:05

@Wiennetta because I like to over analyse and understand things and I genuinely don't get these.

I've bought a couple of pairs and I love them. I can confirm they don't make you look like John Wayne unless you stand like John Wayne and floof the side seams so they stick out weirdly. Mine are non-stretch denim and I love the way they hold in my belly and give me a waist. The fact that they narrow towards the bottom means they don't flap like wide leg jeans (I like those too) but sit nicely on the heels of my trainers.

It was a case of "don't knock it 'til you've tried it' for me - I thought they'd look ridiculous, but they work well with smaller, shorter tops. I'm a late convert to those as well, but realised that showing off my waist in the right clothes is more flattering than covering it with big jumpers/ untucked shirts etc. Felt counterintuitive as I'm chunky and seemingly waistless, but is much more pleasing to me than slim jeans with a big top

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 20/02/2025 09:16

I have a pair of high waisted, barrel jeans and the waist style is what makes the difference for my shape. They have a subtle rounded leg width and on my shape they are comfortable, I think stylish, and balance out my square shoulders. Like so much fashion of late, I often wonder why some clothing styles seem so popular, when they fail to suit and I think look odd, but I think fashion (and barrel jeans are definitely a fashion item at present), should be fun and anything that brings us some fun should be embraced, including the myriad of jeans shapes and styles. Nothing worse than a uniform and I am liking the variations on jeans, which is much preferrable than one shape fits all!

Branleuse · 20/02/2025 09:25

my favourite thing about them is that they have the bagginess of wide-leg pants, but because the ankle is narrower, I dont keep catching my feet and tripping over.

They are genuinely a good shape on me.
I could never really get on with skinny jeans. I trip over in wide leg baggies. Bootcut and flares the same - trip hazard.

IsItSummerSoon · 20/02/2025 09:29

I bought them by accident. I put them on and was very much WTAF is this.

But... they are so comfortable! I love wearing them, I think I look like deranged but comfort first. 😂

(Edited to say, the more I wear them the more I like the look. I'll probably still be wearing these when everyone else has moved on, as usual.)

DancingCactusFlower · 20/02/2025 09:45

I have a couple of pairs and I love them. I too have smaller waist and larger hips/thighs. I wear with something cropped / fitted on top and it seems to work for me.

trainermush · 20/02/2025 09:56

Yes I like them because they are wider but taper so I prefer the shoe options. I don't think they are that flattering on me (think they suit pear shapes better) but not too bothered about that. I did try on the exaggerated ones and I couldn't pull them off.
