I bought this and love it but I'm having doubts - I am 50 - is this mutton dressed as lamb territory?
I am size 10 and 5'2" so it is almost knee length on me, fits very well but but but....

Agree to an extent, which is why the original point wrang a little hollow to me. But I know older men, either more artistic and/or in the queer community, who wear whatever they want, no matter how colorful it funky and they aren't policed that their style is too old.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 16/01/2025 21:08

But the point here is that the OP actually asked if that dress made her look like mutton dressed as lamb, so in some part of her mind she must have thought it might, and because she asked, people have given their opinions.
If she had felt that because she liked it and her children liked it she was happy to wear it, then she wouldn't have asked for complete strangers' thoughts on it.

or maybe it's because that stupid expression exists, and even in 2025 some people are still shamed by judgemental individuals who believe clothes have some weird age limit.

Of course there's a category of customers who prefers a more frumpy"mature" look and retailers cater for them. But if these custoemr wear what they like, why can't other people prefer something else?

The difference between "teen" shops and "mum" shops is more linked with size than style frankly. Teens are, or used to be, a lot slimmer.

You don't look older when wearing "young people clothes" (whatever the heck that means). At worst you look your age, which you would look anyway, but that's not even the case.

I read on a thread like this that you could be "too old for jeans". How would this be even a thing?

Clothes don’t have an age. Period. There are of course inappropriate pieces worn at the wrong occasion, but beyond that it’s fair game, imo.

To me it’s a holiday dress - something I’d take for a long summer in Marseilles and wear several times a week. Probably with the buttons at the back all undone over a very plain bikini top - so as to be ready to throw it off and wade into the sea at any moment.

In that scenario I’d get loads of wear out of it. Equally as a summer in the city dress at home, worn over very faded jeans with clogs or flip flops and carrying a canvas or straw bag; for normal long hot days of errands, casual lunch with a friend, a gallery or concert and a leisurely end to the day on a terrace with a cocktail. (Though as I said I would prefer a different, less waisted shape - but I’d have no problem with the flouncy top.) I’m considerably older than the OP.

Possibly not the type you’re thinking of - more a plain black stretchy band or cropped vest sort of thing. And no - I wouldn’t buy it as a beach dress - just as an everyday summer dress that could work for all eventualities from beach to cocktails.

I think it's gorgeous and if you're comfortable in it go for it! MN isn't a great place to ask a question like this, there's so much negativity and everyone likes to have a good b. Wear what makes you comfortable and screw what others think x

it would help if you could see what the posters replying look like. 😂

I don't mean judgements about the physical appearance, but simply the style of clothes they are wearing themselves. You might find it easier to ignore some people because you have completely different taste.
